(Correction- December)

Tuesday, December 3 in the Dome vs. IOWA at TBA, (to be announced) TV: ESPN/ESPN2 RADIO: TK 99/105 This is this year’s game in the ACC/Big 10 challenge.

The Hawkeyes like to score and they figure they can out-score you. Two years ago they scored 79.7ppg but they had the worst defense in the Big Ten, giving up 78.7ppg. Their Coach, Fran McCaffrey: “We’re never going to be Virginia because of the way they play on offense.” Or defense. McCaffrey’s philosophy came up short as Iowa went 14-19. But last year they decided to play some defense, giving up 73.9, (vs. 78.3), with the result that they went 23-12 and 10-10 in the Big Ten. In the NCAA tournament they “whipped Cincinnati and took Tennessee into overtime”. “We were more physical, tougher and more concentrated on defense.” They may have to do more of that this year.

Their leading scorer, forward Tyler Cook, jumped to the NBA. Guard Jordan Bohannon “a fine assist man who protects the ball, hits long range jumpers and is great at the foul line”, had a hip injury and a surgery in May and that may cause him to miss the season:
McCaffrey brought in a grad transfer from Valparaiso, 6-2 180 Bakari Evelyn who is, himself, trying to get over an ankle injury to run the point if Bohannon can’t come back. Two players transferred out, starting guard Isaiah Moss to Kansas and guard Maishe Dailey to Akron.

They have firepower on the wings with 6-6 205 Joe Wieskamp, (11.1p/4.9r), and freshman CJ Frederick, 6-3 190. McCaffrey has two sons on the team, 6-5 205 Connor, (4.4p/1.4r), and 6-9 190 Patrick, “the highest rated recruit of the McCaffrey era”. (Maybe Jim could borrow Jimmy from Cornell and we could have the brother s go 2 on 2). Patrick “blocks shots, hits the three, slides his feet well on defense, gets to the hole and is a good offensive rebounder”. 6-11 245 Luke Garza, (13.1p/4.5r), “is a solid interior player with an improving shooting eye.”

Saturday, December 7th at GEORGIA TECH Time: TBA TV: ACC NETWORK RADIO: TK 99/105 (This game could also be played on Sunday December 8th at Noon, depending on when the ACC football championship is played)

The Jackets were a bottom-feeder last year at 14-18, 6-12 in the conference. It was their 12th consecutive losing record in the conference. But they get 4 of their top 5 players back. The best is probably 6-9 243 James Banks, who averaged 10.5p/7.7r/2.4b. Next to him will be 6-9 221 Moses Wright (6.7p/3.7r but 15.6p in the last five games). 6-0 176 Jesse Alvarado (12.5p/3.9r/3.4a, has “shown a willingness to be aggressive and play tough”. But he shot only 28.6% from three and needs to play more under control. (Tech was last in the league in avoiding turnovers with 14.3 per game). 6-4 188 Michael DeVoe (9.7p/3.3r/2.5a shot 39% form three and “has a sneaky slashing game”. 6-9 217 Evan Cole “has shown some rebounding potential”. Freshman Asanti Price (6-5 175) is “an athletic good shooter who can defend”. There are two transfers, 6-7 228 Jordan Usher from USC “projects as a downhill, offensive-minded wing” and 5-11 155 Bubba Parham hit 40% of his threes at VMI. 6-8 230 JC transfer David Didenko “is a physical presence who can shoot”. That’s better than being a ghostly presence who can shoot. Or is it?

Coach Josh Pastner: “The best way to win in this league is to get old and stay old. I like this team because we’re older.” Actually, no one in college sports is old. Some of them are more experienced than others.

Saturday, December 14 at GEORGETOWN at 1PM TV: FOX RADIO: TK 99/105

Patrick Ewing continues to rebuild this program. Last year he started three freshmen and went 19-14, 9-9 in the Big East. He’s brought in some more talent and several guys he can look eye-eye to so the Hoyas should be most formidable, especially in their own place. His all-frosh backcourt of James Akinjo and Mac McClung were very productive. Akino, (6-0 180), averaged 13.4p/2.9r/5.2a. He’s “a tough point guard who shot better than 40% from three point range in Big East play and is unafraid of having the ball in his hands late in close games….Akinjo is a strong distributor who must cut back on his turnovers and improve his finishing inside the arc.”

McClung, (6-2 185, 13.4p/2.6r/2.0a) was an internet sensation before he ever came to Georgetown:
If Jimmy Cagney was a basketball player:
…he’d look like this:
Angels with Dirty Faces the basketball game
“McClung showed glimpses of the highlight reel game that excited fans before his arrival but struggled with his outside shooting….He’s a better distributor than he’s given credit for and he also went for 38 points against Little Rock in December.”

The third freshman was Josh LeBlanc, (6-7 230, 9.1p/7.3r), “establishing himself as one of the best rebounders in the conference. He’s efficient inside the paint, shooting 63% from the floor and was the team’s best shot blocker, (1.1 per game)”. 6-8 205 Jamarko Pickett (6.2p/3.8r) is a good three point shooter. 6-6 210 JUCO transfer Galen Alexander “was highly recruited coming out of high school”. He “can shoot and get to the basket”. 6-3 185 Terrell Allen is a grad transfer from UCF. He’s “an excellent distributor and defender who can also make threes” and “a battle-tested veteran who started 55 games and won 43 over the last two seasons”. He averaged 6.7 assists for a team that nearly beat Duke in the second round of the tournament last year.

And here comes the tall trees. They lost one – a very good one named Jessie Govan but NC State transfer Omer Turtseven, (7-0 275 13.5p/6.7r), is a proven talent. We wanted 6-11 235 Qudus Wahab but Ewing got him. 6-11 205 Malcom Wilson “is another good defender with solid mobility and a somewhat raw offensive game”. Timothy Igohefe (6-11 240) is “an athletic freak with an 8-11 standing reach”.

DON’T LOSE TO GEORGETOWN, EITHER! But we might.

Wednesday, December 18 in the Dome vs. OAKLAND at 8PM TV: ESPNU RADIO: TK 99/105

The “Golden Grizzlies” are usually one of the better mid-majors but they are coming off a 16-17 season, (11-7 in the Horizon league) and had five players transfer out. One also transferred in, 6-2 185 Rashad Williams from fellow Horizon league member Cleveland State, where he averaged 10.8ppg and 40.5% from the arc. But he needs NCAA permission to play this year.

Fortunately, Xavier Hill-Mais, (6-7 248), was not one of the transfers. He averaged 18.3p/7.2r. He also has 6-11 217 Brian Brechting (9.5p/5.9r) and 6-5 190 Trey Maddox (6.7p/2.4r) . Brechting came on strong in the final fourteen games, averaging 15.2p/9.1r. 5-4 190 Kevin Kangu was part of the JC national champion Vincennes team last year.

Saturday, December 21 in the Dome vs. NORTH FLORIDA at 6PM TV: ACCN RADIO: TK 99/105

The Ospreys were going to have all five starters back but “junior standout Noah Horchler was dismissed from the team late last season due to a violation of team rules”. The others are Wajid Aminu (6-7 190 11.7p/6.5r) who was the Atlantic Sun’s defensive player of the year with 2.1 blocks per game, Garrett Sans (6-6 180 12.5p/4.9r) , Ivan Gandia-Rosa (6-1 185 10.5p/3.2r) and JT Escobar (6-2 180 (11.7p/6.5r) who “add instant offense to an Osprey’s attack was among the league’s best a year ago”. Ezekeil Balogun transferred into the program.

UNF was 16-17, 9-7 in the conference last year. They averaged over 75 points a game but gave up 76.7.

Saturday, December 28 in the Dome vs. NIAGARA at 7PM TV: ACCNX RADIO: TK 99/105

Once upon a time we had a good rivalry going with the Purple Eagles, one of several with New York teams that have gone by the wayside over the years. Former LeMoyne coach Patrick Beilein will be taking over a team that went 13-19 last year and 6-12 in the Metro Atlantic. His best returning player is James Towns, a 5-10 175 point guard who averaged 10.5p/3.5a.”Towns is one of those who can explode for a big game on any given night.” Raheem Solomon (6-2 175) averaged 7.8ppg and Marcus Hammond (6-1 160) 5.8 and “are expected to be two of the team’s best shooters”. (I don’t know if that’s a comment on them or on the team.) Pat’s brought in a pair of JUCO forwards from Miami Dade, Italo Ciccoti and Nicholas Kratholm and a transfer from George Washington, 5-9 180 Shandon Brown.

As long as Calvin Murphy doesn’t have any eligibility left, we should win this. In fact, Oakland, North Florida and Niagara is the closest thing we have to a soft spot on the schedule this year. If we can get by Iowa, Georgia Tech and Georgetown, we should have an undefeated December. And we’ll need one.
