My guess? Expect an announcement on Sat or Sun.

True enough. I liked Marrone's sideline demeanor - HC is supposed to be thinking not getting emotional.
There's a sliding scale on judging this. Stoicism is good if the coach makes smart decisions (Marrone made some meathead ones on punts). Sideline enthusiasm is bad if it's distracting (Shafer getting penalties).

Got nervous at the end with South Carolina and Mizzou, but fortunately those were just rumors.

This is enormously huge. Wow.
mizzou scared me, but not scarolina.

this is awesome.

heres the other rub...ill accept failure this time.

dont think it will happen, but ok...we tried.

year 2, year 3...we should be rolling...

I was worried too. Glad I was wrong about announcement date and you were right Rocco. Still think Coyle won't announce until he has a signed contract. Hopefully it's soon cause it ain't over until the fat lady sings...

Babers may not be talking with the press but we can be sure he is talking with his agent.. I can't believe SU is waiting for a decision from him at this late date. Had they not have him signed we would have one of the 2 other guys by now. Babers is straight up. Said he would get last nights game out of the way and now is letting the team have its day in the sun.. An announcement of S.C. Signing a HC would seal the deal for sure. Maybe an incentive for him if they won last night and again in the bowl game. That would sell a pile of seats in the dome...

So, according to sources, Babers was locked up as early as Tues night. At least had an agreement in place. His agent was obviously doing the work behind the scenes while Dino was getting his team ready for the MAC championship.

Look at how soon this was announced after the MAC Champ game that ended around 11:30 on Fri night. About 12 hours later, it was nearly official. This deal was done well before the game and the formality of everything happened afterwards. At least that's how I understand it.

I recall fans on this board criticizing Marrone because he wasn't animated on the sidelines. I guess you can't please everyone.
Marrone always looked like he ate a bad bologna sandwich in his pregame meal or at half time. He didn't look cool and collected... he looked like he was miserable and hated his life and with the Bills he added dazed and confused to is look.

That's encouraging to know. Basically Frost fell through and they were ready to act.

So basically the second frosty the snowman decided he wanted to go melt in the Florida heat... Coyle closed the deal with Babers. Given how quickly he pivoted from Frost to Babers and closed the deal with Babers, Coyle obviously had a plan in place well before he fired Shafer. What do all of those fun people reaming Coyle after Frost took the UCF job have to say for themselves now?

I wonder where all of that Ash bs came from mid-week which was presumably after Babers was done in principle? Seems like he was plan C in case Babers fell through at the last second. After this process the person I'm most impressed with is Coyle. Its nice to have a modern AD who plays chess instead of checkers.

Yes - Coyle looks like he is very competent. As far as Ash - who knows? Leverage during Baber negotiations? Getting a friend's name out there for a ride on the coaching carousel? Some combination thereof? In any event, Coyle looking solid. My only quibble was going for Frost first, though he quickly put the kabosh on Frost's obvious foot out the door.

I wouldn't be surprised if Coyle had a convo with Frost or his agent back in October after the USF/UVA/Pitt trifecta to feel him out. After all they had a previous relationship from Boise. I bet Babers wasn't really on Coyle's radar until November as he put his short list together... others who have seen that list will have to answer that question.

I actually have no problem with Coyle going after Frost as there is no way of predicting whether Frost or Babers was better for the job. Frost has much more recruiting buzz and is higher profile with a TON of upside but Babers has the system and is a proven winner. Given the previous relationship, I'm not too surprised Frost was choice 1, but given how quickly Babers was closed on afterwards it sounds like he was 1a.

I would love to hear a post-mortem on how the Frost deal fell through but I bet Frost was agreed in principle and UCF came in with the ridiculous buy out to counter what SU was offering to change the landscape of the negotiation.

I would imagine that Babers has been on Coyle's radar for quite some time. He basically eluded to it during the presser.

The only thing I know is that they were talking to a lot of coaches and agents in the process. Add in the rumors and there were smokescreens everywhere. When Frost was headed to UCF, Babers seemed like the perfect guy. As far as Coyle's hot board goes, it will Frost then Babers. Had it not worked out with Babers, they had 2-3 guys that were next in line who they really liked.

They pretty much went full bore on Babers early last week and there was an instant mutual interest and the talks went favorably. The fact Babers did not specifically shoot down Syracuse rumors seemed to be obvious enough for me.

Coyle was setting up Rutgers for a bad hire. Babers and trollin' NJ Dumpster U. Love this guy.
