I'm not sure it's as much about the label 'combo' vs. 'point' as much as it is that the likely result of a Battle/Howard backcourt is that we won't have a shooter. Mali is a huge piece of what we're trying to do next season. Although, having said that, there are still reasons to like a group w/o Mali.
The team you're referencing (I'm guessing the Final Four group in '13), sticks out as struggling offensively largely due to the issues MCW had being the go-to guy. So yes, he struggled from 3 (.292) but the bigger issue is that his overall field goal percentage was atrocious due to struggles finishing at the rim or in the mid-range (sagging defenses certainly didn't help). He shot just .436 on two-point FGs. That's not good. We somehow made it to the finals of the BET with him hitting a total of 9 FGs in four games. Think about that -- he's handling the ball the whole game, is clearly the team's most talented player, is playing essentially 40 mpg and he averaged just over 2 FGs a game. Ouch. Aside from him it was Triche and Southerland (neither a creator for the most part, though Triche came on a bit in the tourney) and Fair, who was really, really solid. But that was the whole offense.
I don't know what they'll get from the new big men (Chuckwu and Moyer) but the indications are that Battle should be a threat offensively and we know Lydon was good this year with a good chance to be better next season. Roberson finished strong and should contribute. Howard is a wild card but seems like he could be a really solid facilitator and Coleman is unlikely to be a big threat but could be a guy who goes for 7 and 6 and contributes a decent amount.
Not sure that's teh makings of a top 15 team, but I would feel better about that offense at first blush than I did about that 12-13 team.
