First off, let's talk about the attendance, 8733? This isn't directed at the diehards on the board from the NYC area; I know you all went. But 8733? Even discounting the unattractive opponent (who appeared to bring 17 fans to the game) and the direct conflict with the football game, this was disappointing.

I have always felt we bring 7500 locals and 7500 CNY people for big games at MSG. I am thinking most of the CNY people decided to skip the one for the UConn game instead.

Credit to USC South for playing well. Their defense was good and it disrupted our ability to run our half court stuff completely. Extremely disappointed in how poorly our PGs and the staff handled it. The way to beat this team is to get the ball inside and methodically make FTs and foul their players out. We took some steps towards doing this in the second half but our PGs and wings weren't great getting into the paint and we were really bad shooting FTs.

One of the best ways to gauge how good the freshmen are is to see how they do in their first game on a big stage on the road. If they are fearless, it is a good sign. If they are fearless and play well, you have a future AA on your hands.

Well TT played fearless but poorly. And TB looked confused and uncomfortable. If he was going to show his ability to penetrate and get to the hole in half court settings this season, this should have been a good game to do it. He had someone on him, 30 feet from the basket, everytime he touched the ball. I don't remember him even trying it once though. Maybe it is his foot. I hope so. I can say at one point in the game he went after a lob pass inside playing defense and jumped amazingly high to get a deflection. So he appeared physically capable to me. When the defense extends like that, you have to make them pay for it by exploding past them. This is really important I think because our offense needs good slashers to work. Frankie can do it. Pretty sure JG is not going to be able to do much of this against top competition, we have no one else well suited to slash...TB needs to step up here, and fast.

Thought AW struggled with a hand in his face big time. He didn't try to penetrate. Has enough athletic ability to get shots up off the dribble but his accuracy greatly decreases. Would like to see him called out in that set play SU has run for years for GMac and TC where they run all the way around the perimeter of the court to a spot on the wing where they get the ball and release the shot almost simultaneously. I wonder if AW can do that? Don't remember anyone trying that so far this year. Thought his defense was okay, am disappointed with his rebounding to date. Especially when he is playing forward on defense, which is going to happen a lot if TL is going to play a lot at center.

The player I was most disappointed at was TR. Against a defense like this, a player as limited as he is he will struggle to get shots but he again couldn't convert point blank shots, and was largely a non-factor when Syracuse had the ball. For much of the game he just seemed to stand around on the perimeter.

Without knowing better, I would have guessed JG was a frosh. He was awful, made foolIsh decIsions repeatedly, couldn't penetrate and was just an out of control mess. With TR, PC and TB all essentially non-factors on offense, JG has to get shots off and draw fouls and get the ball down low. I hope he is just going to struggle a bit playing at a higher level than he is used to,

FH had a nightmare game. Just like the Indiana (Pa) and Monmouth games, he started out badly, was not ready to play and looked lost. To his refit, he was able to get into the paint. Thought the bad call early, where he was called for charging, had a big impact on the game and discouraged him from being more aggressive. When he got inside, USC played for the pass, tried to draw bogus charge calls and FH needed to go strong to the hole. He did that more in the second half and I thought his judgement was good, except when he tried to dunk over a USC big and was almost Borg-assimilated. Heartened that he made a 3 in this game. Really disheartened by his poor FT shooting, which played a key role in the loss. Really hard to win close games when your PG can't shoot FTs. Is it possible he could shoot better from the 3 point circle than the FT line? How often has that happened for someone who regularly takes both types of shots? FH is a special player for sure.

TL did some good things and some bad things, which unfortunately is more than one can say about many on the SU team. He clearly is uncomfortable taking a lot of shots but for this team, against this style of defense, he is going to be asked to do it. Wasn't as smooth and efficient as he normally is, didn't rebound well and the tight defense helped him to make a ton of TOs. The adjustment from being a complementary player to 'the man' is a tough one and how this goes will be one of the most important story lines for this team this season.

I thought DC2 played pretty well. He is never going to be good defensively but he positions himself well and is our best defensive rebounder. And if he gets the ball in decent position, he can finish. Which is more than I can say than a bunch of others on the team. His poor FT shooting is a real problem, especially because he is really good at drawing fouls. With USC in the bonus early in the second half, this probably affected his playing time...

PC got a lot of PT ad IMHO, really hurt the team when he was in. He is a complete non-factor on offense and his repeated bad decisions/positioning woes on defense seem to offset the positives he rigs to the table there. This was Jzb doing a very un-JB like thing: Igor it the short term for the long term. Yes, giving PC extended minutes yesterday may have played a key role in the team losing. But if investing in PC with serious PT now makes him a serviceable player later, it will be worth the investment. That is the gamble: is PC going to improve or is this investment for nought? I don't know. I really don't.

Brutal, Tom, but unfortunately dead on.

To me it looks like PC is our version of UConn's Thebeet and that is probably stretching it. And yes its very uncharacteristic of JB to allow such an extended "teaching moment".

Fortunately we have still have time to improve before ACC competition although I'm not looking forward to playing Wiscy Tues on their court and having to face likes of beast pair Hayes and Hap; could get very ugly.

...almost Borg-assimilated.....well played Tomcat!

Given the Coach's comments in the press conference regarding the bigs I expect PC's minutes will be greatly diminished in the future.

As always, great write up!

These games over Thanksgiving weekend in NYC are always a poor draw. So many people are away. When we played in the NIT Tip-Off at MSG a few years ago, the attendance was equally poor. Plus this Brooklyn game seemed poorly organized from the start- nobody even knew the correct tip time.

MSG should be packed next week.

My impression was that South Carolina punched us in the mouth out of the gate and rather than taking the punch and landing one of our own in return, we shied away from contact. Felt like we got bullied for the greater part of the game. I think aggressive, physical teams that play an aggressive style are going to be a problem for us. It's not necessarily size but the get in your grill, push you around style...you know, like Pitt. I'm not sure that should come as a surprise given our personnel.

I can't call out PC in particular although he was terrible. Everyone was just completely pitiful. This game was Dayton and Butler in the NCAA tournament all over again.

The biggest issue I had was how incredibly defeated and dejected FH looked almost immediately. Yes the charge was part of that but for somebody who should be quarterbacking the team to have body language and a demeanor like that is crippling. If he doesn't clean that up he and the team are going nowhere in a big hurry.

Yep was thinking the same thing. It is a rare JB team that punches back in these scenarios. Based on this I think you can assume 2 more Pitt Ls this year. Absolutely sucks.

I will echo the well done on the Borg-assimilated comment. :)

Remember Pitt has a new head coach, so very possibly a new personality. I wouldn't concede the Pitt games yet.

Great write-up, pretty much agree with everything. I think the poor call on Howard on what could have been a three point play was a game-changer for the first half. Also, if Roberson could have finished that effort on the one handed lob......that might have brought the house down.

I have no idea why PC was getting so many minutes. He seemed incredibly lost, and overmatched against SC. Even on the press he seemed more of a liability with how he reacts to the plays. Outside of being big, he offered little. He'll have his moments, but I would imagine they'll be few and far between against the better portion of our schedule.

AW was limited more than I figured he would be against those defenders - I thought he could have used the step back a bit more, or the quick dribble and pull-up. He seemed sort of lackadaisical throughout.

Yes but they still have many legacy dump truck players. I don't even watch our games against Pitt anymore. Haven't decided if I will this year but they are going to have to prove they can compete against Pitt before I stop conceding those games.

Every time Howard made a bad play, turned it over, got beat, fouled or missed a free throw he looked over at the bench like he thought he was going to be benched. Seemed mentally out of it after the bogus charge call. Seems to have very little confidence.

Dead on, Tom.

We needed to get exposed like this, IMO. 60% (counting MM) of this team are playing for the first time in JB's system. The first 4 games were fool's gold. This team needs to learn quickly that the formula S Car used is pretty much what they are going to face for most of the season. SCar was exceptionally good on D, but it is a mistake to think that we don't play at least "8" other teams that will play that type of D just as hard and just as well - Vir, L'ville (2x), Wiscon, VaTech, Miami, Pitt (2x)...NCar?

To expand on your thoughts: Dribble penetration, some inside scoring, interior defense, and TL becoming the Man will be the story line of the season. This is, overall, one of the most offensively skilled teams JB has ever had, with 7 guys who can score double digits on any given night. This team will take time to gel, but will be a lot more effective come March.

As an aside, when was the last time we lost a "tournament" game in November? I don't know the answer, but it seems like a rare occurrence.

Methinks you've gone a bit overboard for lack of perspective. It was the fifth game of the season for what's basically a brand new team trying to fit five new pieces into the system. No player in that situation is going to be comfortable - with good reason and likely for sometime going forward. That's the deal when the roster turns over as ours has. The coaches are still looking to see what works, what doesn't and assess our weaknesses and strengths. Every player is either brand new to our system, being asked to do more than last year or in some cases playing positions relatively foreign to them (e.g. TB at guard).

FH: new to having the ball in his hands so much
JG: new
AW: new
DC2: asked to do more, play more
PC: work in progress, missed a year
TL: asked to do more
TR: maybe just had a bad game
TB: new
TT: new

As JB has repeated said, it's going to take some time. If a game like this happens halfway through the season, then maybe the criticisms will be warranted. But c'mon man, it's one game in December against a very good team. Play them again in March, the results might just as easily be quite different.

PC and JG getting extended time while looking like they didn't know where they were half the time; JB rarely appearing to be totally pssed at players coming to the bench and his calm demeanor at the presser lead me to believe he felt this was a learning/teaching experience.

It will be very interesting to see how we come out of the gate at Wisconsin.

Don't you realize that according to a lot of posters, SU doesn't have a half court offense. Their words, not mine.

Regarding attendance, Im not sure they could have fit anymore in there since the top level was not opened up. The bottom bowl was pretty much jampacked. Syracuse crowd was extremely good for a thxgiving weekend. And Barclays is a great hoops venue by the way. Looking forward to the ACCT.

If there was demand to open the upper bowl, they would have opened the upper bowl. Or even part of it. The curtain system allows for that.
Just proves that while we travel amazing regardless -- Thanksgiving weekend games are not as good as a different weekend.

Totally agree. The Thxgiving weekend games have historically been bad attendance games, even when we were at the Garden. If anything, the upper curtain made things feel rather intimate. Was a good atmosphere despite the rather rough basketball watch.

Don't be surprised if the part of the upper bowl at Barclays is closed for the Tuesday of the ACCT. Was like that in Greensboro.

To defend that theory, the BC-Richmond, Maryland-Kansas State doubleheader played at the Barclay's Center later Saturday night drew a crowd of 5011...
