What a strange game.
For a while it looked like Syracuse was going to win 96-0. Then Dungey stopped playing, the offense collapsed, the defense fell apart and it looked like SU might lose.
Then Dungey returned and order was restored.
I hate seeing Eric run the ball so much. Hate seeing him take so many big hits. Yes, it is what he is best at but using this this way almost guarantees he will not finish the season. Props to him for making some great runs. Props to him for making some good throws. I hope the damage to his body tonight heals quickly and does not end the season almost before it started.
Disappointed in the OL. The pass blocking against an undersized and unimpressive WMU DL was not good. The holes they opened for the running game weren’t great but they played 8 men in the box all game long and it is hard to run when everyone in the stadium knows that is what you are going to do 80% of the time,
Thought Devito played like a frosh QB. Showed excellent quickness and running ability (he is faster than ED), but it looked like he overthrew Dome passes, and waited too long sometimes to make a decision. No question he has a strong arm. It didn’t help the running game fizzled with him in the game and it didn’t help the pass blocking of the OL was especially poor when he was playing. His big play was brought back due to a hold and Pierce fumbled to end a promising drive. I think he is going to be fine over time.
Thought Koda was probably our best OL. Adams was right up there with him until he got tossed.
Looked like the staff tried to get the ball to Butler 7 or 8 times and got nothing for it. Part of it was bad luck where QBs made bad oases but it desn’t look like he has that knack of getting to 50-50 balls all great WRs have. Custis on the other hand seemed to come through almost every time they threw it in his direction, including one great catch late that iced the game. Impressive. Little PT was given to the other WRs, in part because Elsmore and Kleinberg played so much. Not a big fan of this but the point total makes that opinion a questionable one.
Hope some of the young WRs get in the rotation soon.
Thought Cisco was lost most of the night. He took bad angles, missed tackles badly, was a mess in coverage and never seemed to make a tackle. That can’t happen at the FS position. Thought Cordy looked lost but he was at least aggressive and I am happy he apparently didn’t break any bones right away.
Thought Foster was our best defender. Speed, size, big hitter, made some good tackles in the open field. Thought the LBs were quite good. Guthrie, Whitner and Armstrong all seemed to make plays and be around the football. Frederick had a quiet but solid effort and I thought Trill showed great potential.
Biggest disappointment was Scoop, who kept getting burned deep and never moved to fix things. Missed some tackles too. I know one of his hands is banged up but Wilma that was a really shaky performance from him.
I was also somewhat disappointed with the DL. They did a pretty good job against the run but rarely provided a pass rush, allowing the WMU QB a ton of time. This must improve.
Props to Hofrichter and Szymt looked solidified his first game at PK (when did that happen?). Kick coverage, led by Cullen and Custis, was solid. And our return teams, led by mobile bigs, did okay.
To get to 6 wins, we need to win 3 games we lost last season. This one equates with the Middle Tennessee State game, so we are +1 so far. Good start, I hope ED is okay.
