What a strange game.

For a while it looked like Syracuse was going to win 96-0. Then Dungey stopped playing, the offense collapsed, the defense fell apart and it looked like SU might lose.

Then Dungey returned and order was restored.

I hate seeing Eric run the ball so much. Hate seeing him take so many big hits. Yes, it is what he is best at but using this this way almost guarantees he will not finish the season. Props to him for making some great runs. Props to him for making some good throws. I hope the damage to his body tonight heals quickly and does not end the season almost before it started.

Disappointed in the OL. The pass blocking against an undersized and unimpressive WMU DL was not good. The holes they opened for the running game weren’t great but they played 8 men in the box all game long and it is hard to run when everyone in the stadium knows that is what you are going to do 80% of the time,

Thought Devito played like a frosh QB. Showed excellent quickness and running ability (he is faster than ED), but it looked like he overthrew Dome passes, and waited too long sometimes to make a decision. No question he has a strong arm. It didn’t help the running game fizzled with him in the game and it didn’t help the pass blocking of the OL was especially poor when he was playing. His big play was brought back due to a hold and Pierce fumbled to end a promising drive. I think he is going to be fine over time.

Thought Koda was probably our best OL. Adams was right up there with him until he got tossed.

Looked like the staff tried to get the ball to Butler 7 or 8 times and got nothing for it. Part of it was bad luck where QBs made bad oases but it desn’t look like he has that knack of getting to 50-50 balls all great WRs have. Custis on the other hand seemed to come through almost every time they threw it in his direction, including one great catch late that iced the game. Impressive. Little PT was given to the other WRs, in part because Elsmore and Kleinberg played so much. Not a big fan of this but the point total makes that opinion a questionable one.

Hope some of the young WRs get in the rotation soon.

Thought Cisco was lost most of the night. He took bad angles, missed tackles badly, was a mess in coverage and never seemed to make a tackle. That can’t happen at the FS position. Thought Cordy looked lost but he was at least aggressive and I am happy he apparently didn’t break any bones right away.

Thought Foster was our best defender. Speed, size, big hitter, made some good tackles in the open field. Thought the LBs were quite good. Guthrie, Whitner and Armstrong all seemed to make plays and be around the football. Frederick had a quiet but solid effort and I thought Trill showed great potential.

Biggest disappointment was Scoop, who kept getting burned deep and never moved to fix things. Missed some tackles too. I know one of his hands is banged up but Wilma that was a really shaky performance from him.

I was also somewhat disappointed with the DL. They did a pretty good job against the run but rarely provided a pass rush, allowing the WMU QB a ton of time. This must improve.

Props to Hofrichter and Szymt looked solidified his first game at PK (when did that happen?). Kick coverage, led by Cullen and Custis, was solid. And our return teams, led by mobile bigs, did okay.

To get to 6 wins, we need to win 3 games we lost last season. This one equates with the Middle Tennessee State game, so we are +1 so far. Good start, I hope ED is okay.

its just hard to quantify scoring 55 and also saying 2 of the 3 WR did nothing the QBs threw poorly, the RBs avg 3 yds a carry, the oline played what I hope is a C game.

had the D not imploded in the 3rd we would have been ecstatic with the effort but still there were very few solid holes for the RB, it was nice to see that we figured out a way to rush in the red zone.

I also thought we ran very vanilla schemes with the oline blocking, and there were a ton of mistakes on pass blocking that need to get resolved.

I agree with all of this except the LB's looking good. I thought they were pretty damn awful. Whitner was getting pushed out of the way with ease and I think Guthrie is a step too slow. We need someone in there who plays with aggression. These guys were tentative at best. I wouldn't mind seeing some other guys get a look. I don't think this tape is going to help them much

Devito will be fine. Lots of rust. First college game but also first real game in two years.
I agree he'll be fine but was surprised that he looked that uncomfortable to me. Given the players we've had start here as RFr and the number of Fr and RFr that have played really well for other schools the last few years, I expected more. I know it was less than a full game, so I'm looking forward to him getting some more snaps in what should be a couple blowouts now that he got his feet wet.

It feels weird to feel not great about the seasons prospects after watching our boys lay 55 points on an opponent in the season opener away.

Dungey saved our bacon (200 yards on the ground for him!). We looked unstoppable with him in there. Custis looks ready to play. OLine looked fine but Strickland continues to exist just to absorb punishment for 2-3 yard gains.

Everything else seems shaky at best as noted above. I was hoping for more than one receiver to step up. The defense gave up 42 points and the only time they got pressure on the QB they came away with an INT.

Fun game overall. Will have to see improvement across the board to think this will be the special season we hoped for.

Great post, as usual by the Tomcat. And he pointed out that DeVito had a great play that was negated by a penalty. That throw to Custis running to the sidelines was a thing of beauty.

But since we were 4-8, I think we need to win only two games we lost last year to get to 6 wins. I think however, that we can do better than 6 wins.

Here’s a weird stat on a weird night. We had 3 guys average over 20 yards on kickoff returns. None of them were Sean Riley, who only averaged 16.
I'm ready for those random loads (wait I'm not done) to get some carries

I thought Cordy looked like a Sophomore out there and couldn't find his sea legs, this surprised me.

The OL did not help TD in any way, they needed to step up and got beat badly.

Pierce can't hold the ball that far out...did it last year and this young man has to be taught to how to do it correctly and now. Too talented to play foolishly like that.

He fumbled last year with the exact play. He’s always pretty loose with the ball.

I don't see 5 wins this year. It will be another 4-8 and possibly 5-7 year at most. Didn't see the spring game for the first time and bought the hype but the DB's can't cover unless the DL puts pressure and I'm hoping that WMU OL is really good and that was why. The WR's other than Custis are non factors and I am seriously hoping that at least one of the freshmen can do something to help or as I wrote in another thread, put Strickland AND Neal out there at the same time and rotate them Tailback/slot each possesion.

Passing game was bad, real bad. Those plays to Custis won’t be there against most of our schedule, and that was our only passing success. Hoping it was an anomaly.

I didn’t see us complete any normal pattern

Funniest thing that happened yesterday was the incompetence of the referees saved our a$$ yesterday.
I said in the game thread.
Dungey was called for a personal foul on that scramble on his second play back when it was 34-28. The two players got ejected and at first they gave us a first down. However after review we were a yard short and the refs made it 3rd and 1 over 3rd and 16.
That stupidity was huge for us as we converted the easy 3rd and 1 and went down and finished the drive with a TD.
Total break.

what a strange game indeed. i watched the first half and then left for a housewarming. not even a game.
then came home and read about the second half collapse. i won't comment on it becuz i didn't witness it but like tomcat i too worry about dungey lasting the season and was happy when devito was inserted to close out the half. i fear i've seen this show before. eric is gonna meet a future nfl 1st round pick down the road and lose that battle. best to get devito some early reps. just stunned when i saw the boxscore this am.

I feel like the offsetting ejections nullify the rest of the penalties. Once you have offsetting that’s it. Probably wrong but not sure

Dungey had his own penalty called.

Then the fight broke out. They were separate penalties. If they are from the same act they offset. We had 2 PFs and they had 1 PF:
The two from the fight offset. We got lucky the refs forgot about Dungey’s.
