Couldn't bring myself to make a post on this game until now. I have been in mourning a bit on what might have been.

I thought this was a great game. Thought both teams showed great passion and effort all game long. This was a war. Clemson had some bad breaks with injuries and saw a little of what life is like for a non super power program playing with their 3rd string QB and a make shift OL. But the one huge break they got was the weather. Clemson has far more depth than Syracuse and that really hot, humid weather was, I think, a major key down the stretch, when Clemson finally found a way to move the ball, reviving their impotent offense only when the overworked Syracuse defense hit the wall in the fourth quarter and could not stop simple run plays they had been blowing up routinely most of the game.

The play of the game was the pass Bryce WhateverHisName was made on 4th and long on the final drive, where he threaded a needle on a long pass between 2 SU defenders to get a first down and avoid certain defeat. The kid made one good pass the whole game, and he picked a good time to throw it. Props to him.

I don't know what happened to Cordy but it looked like he broke his hand, or a finger or thumb in his hand the week before and I am assuming the injury got significantly worse on Saturday. Great kid, I admire him a lot but the evidence is overwhelming that he cannot play on defense and stay healthy. Playing like you are 6'4, 260 pounds when you are 5'8, 177 pounds is just too much on his body. I hope the injury is minor and he can return. He might want to think long and hard about the offer to play slot on offense next year. It would be his best chance to contribute to the team and get a reward for all the off season work he puts in.

Thought the game plan on offense was excellent. It isn't easy to embarrass Venables but Dino Babers has done it two years in a row. Credit to Brent for making good adjustments in the second half to stop most of the bleeding. He has a lot of answers on the defensive unit. Man, that DL was so good it should be illegal and #11 was all over the field making plays. He almost singlehandedly took the short passes to sidelines away from us.

Kind of surprised we didn't throw more to Custis but I think he was being covered by their top CB most of the game and the thought was it was better to throw it to Devin Butler or Taj Harris, who were mostly working against a true frosh CB, instead. I thought with Pierce out, they pretty much ignored throwing over the middle of the field, where Clemson is loaded with freak athletes and smurfs like N Johnson and S Riley would get killed. They tried to get them the ball in space out wide instead.

Good thinking. We could really use a big, strong TE or a big, strong, tough slot WR to throw to and attack the middle of the field.

Szymt and Sterling were both outstanding (though Hof did kick a couple punts into the endzone that he probably wishes he could have back). But great work by them, the protection teams, the spanner and holder and certainly the coverage units. Great to see our special teams excelling even against uber talented teams like the Tigers. We appear to have the best special teams in the ACC right now, then that might change given the cheap shot than Clemson player took on Keller near the end of the game, where he broke Matt's collarbone for no reason. If there was justice in the world, that idiotic play would have cost Clemson the game, like it cost Matt the rest of his senior season. It is too bad that had to happen in a game that was hard hitting and physical but also largely clean of cheap hits or other garbage.

The team has to be beat up and hurting after that game. They have to find a way to get ready for a bad Pitt team, playing in an empty stadium and they don't have much time to do it. It is a shame the bye week didn't come a week earlier. The Pitt game is a huge one. We haven't won there in way too long and we have to come back from there on Saturday with a win.

I watched them play UCF. Narduzzi is a B1G coach who continues to coach like he is in the B1G. He spent most of the game trying to cover 4.35 WRs with 4.9 LBs. Finally went with 5 DBs late but they couldn't stop them either. They are very vulnerable to a quick team with speedy athletes who can space them out. We don't have the speed UCF has (Killians was their best player, he almost came here; it really hurts to see him and Hassan Hall doing good things for other teams), but I think we have enough to beat up on their meathead defense.

Their offense is okay but they really miss having Canada as their OL, their young QB is struggling and their OL and RBs look slow and unimpressive.

I like our chances.

Good analysis. I agree Pitt is a big game. We havent won there in a long time. This is the year to do it. Comes down to the defense making winning plays and holding their offense to FG's. Our offense will score some points.

I feel like the defense wearing down in the second half, falls on our offense not moving the ball, and allowing them some rest.

That was definitely part of the equation as was the ultra conservative play calling we went to especially in the 4th. Imagine what we could have done in the middle with an Erv. Oh well, on to Schpitt.

great job as usual. You're spot on re weather, my friend who was there was texting me and said it was the hottest he's ever been in his life let alone in a stadium. And he lives in Florida! Yep huge factor.

We have a senior quarterback. We had a senior QB in 2012 and he carved up the other team throwing intermediate passes over the middle. if you don't want to throw to Riley or Johnson, throw to Custis or Butler. Also, where are the slants? Where are some outside running plays. I would think by now we'd see the dynamic Babers offense in full flower. Where is it? And why didn't we take advantage of the hot weather by going tempo. Why all the standing and staring at the sideline?

the catch on the 3rd and long by Refrow was the play of the game IMHO. Gave them life and kept our D on the field. I too think that our O went into a shell in the 2nd half, for good reason maybe as their D was imposing it's will.

We did throw a couple of slants. One to Custis when we were backed up and another to Butler.

I'm fine with limiting outside running plays vs. a team like Clemson. Too fast sideline to sideline vs our very average-below average running backs.

To me, the difference in this game was the linebacker play. Clemson's bigger, faster backers, were able to spy and take Dungey out of the game, and help out considerably in both run and pass support. Our backers are just too limited right now (the safeties too - Cordy = small/hurt, Foster = hurt, Cisco = green/slight) to match up with the excellent running backs Clemson has. The way those units matched up was really the difference in the game.

Cheap shot? I must have missed that.

It happened on the last Syracuse punt. The kid on Clemson was called for a penalty; that is why the drive started inside the Clemson 10 yard line. I saw it happen live. Should be pretty easy to see on tape.

Good luck the rest of the season.

#3 team clemson 4th and 6 on their side of the field with 2:36 left and 3 timeouts. we were that close .
well nobody's laughing anymore. syracuse is for real. congrats to clemson and ettienne. spy that mofo!

Just a thought. There is a reason Sean Lewis was Dino’s OC over Mike Lynch prior to leaving. I think that is a critical factor that few have discussed as to why our offense is slower and seemingly conservative at times this year.

We should be snapping the ball every 18 seconds or so with a senior QB and senior laden OL, yet here we are at 22. If you look at Kent State, very aggressive and open play calling this year. It is still Dino’s offense, but I don’t think Lynch is as capable as Lewis was. Maybe that will change as the season goes. Would have like to have seen more of the veer offense mixed with a seam game on Saturday.

Agree, and the tiring of the defense was a nice way of saying our lbs were out of position and/or missed tackles or got run over. We lack both speed and physicality at lb and thats a bad combo. Not sure why whitner plays in front of shy but coaches know best.

Agree, alot less talk of pace and tempo this year. The previous 2 years dino was obsessed with plays run in a given time.

Those two (Lewis and Lynch) were labeled co-offensive coordinators last season. Lynch was in the booth, with Lewis on the field. Our offense struggled against an excellent Clemson defense -- but we are 4 and 1, posting a lot of points in other games so far, and looking to be a bowl team, with Lynch as OC. Maybe the pace is a tad slower, but more productive in points scored through 5 games. And consider that Lynch is working with some receivers who haven't played much before this season (Butler being the sole exception).

This is unfair. Clemson’s D is top 5 and more talented. The O was at a major disadvantage, no matter the tempo. It made more sense to mix tempo early (we did).

In the 2nd half, with the lead - not sure why you’re wanting that vs that defense.

Edit: in addition, it’s been suggested that Eric while a warrior and a great competitor- isn’t the right engine for the offense to “flower”... and then against that team? It’s not a mystery why we didn’t look like we did vs UCONN.

The best way to protect a lead is to keep doing what you did to build it.

Sometimes. I think generalities in this case are misleading.

Dino is smarter than any of us on this stuff. You’ll forgive me for giving him the benefit of the doubt after coming with a whisker of beating at top 5 team in one of the hardest venues to play.

To an extent, this is true. They were co-OCs, but let’s be real on this. Lewis was the innovator, the mad scientist, and the spark on the sideline for the offense. Lynch was the manager of the game. You can tell in the play calling. Can we be successful with Lynch? Absolutely. Will we be more consistent? Maybe. Is our ceiling lower? I think so. I also believe better talent is currently masking playcalling that has found very little rhythm for the style of play this offense requires to work. There’s a reason the offense has stalled during large periods of every game. I believe that is also the window into why the offense tends to stall when TD gets in there as well.
