No students officially but I noticed a decent contingent in the usual area. The SSS was there, as was a decent turnout of cheerleaders. They were short some men and a women was pressed into service to carry the S flag during the traditional running of the flags. S woman did a fine job, kept up with S, C and U and all women throughout the world should, IMHO, feel proud and liberated at this time. If they weren't feeling that way already.

The NA was sung by a couple of college students. One was from SU, one from OCC. Both were Skaneatleans. They did a good job, sang acapella in harmony, thought the arrangement mostly worked. It is great to see people overcome their humble origins. Go Lakers!

Watching the teams warm up, it was apparent Marquette was a really undersized team, who was going to rely on muscles and fat to try and overcome height and athletic ability. They do have a bunch of athletic guards but not much in the way of centers or power forwards. Johnson-Odom and Blue in particular are impressive at driving to the basket and scoring or drawing fouls.

Glad to see Keita looking normal in the pregame warm-ups. After a collision during the game, he started limping noticeably and lost something. He also lost some battles with Davante Gardner, the 300 pound MU center, who actually pushed him under the basket and all the way 3 feet out of bounds on one MU offensive possession (no call).

The refs really let the teams play early, which was to Marquette's advantage. They play an in your face man to man defensive style where they stand as close as possible to their man and actively push, hold and nudge him to try and get the ball loose. Similar style to Pitt's famous clutch and grab. It makes for horrible game watching...really an ugly defensive style. Almost guarantees that they will get a couple of bogus calls as players with the ball try and get free from the aggressive defense and may possibly hit an MU player with an elbow accidentally. I believe this happened last year at least once and refs reviewed tape for this several times again today. Might be the worst rule introduced in recent years, thought the rules committee has made a number of really idiotic moves recently to make this a hard call.

As play got more and more ragged, and SU players started to retaliate to make the aggression of the MU defense, I thought a fight was going to happen. Bad refs lead to a loss of control of the game which leads to extreme frustation and fights. Tim Higgins was content to waddle far from the action, way out of position and think about what he was going to eat for dinner during this period, so he was no help.

Fortunately, the refs started calling the game tighter, reacting to SU's response to MU and the game got more like basketball again. That was bad news for Marquette. They are not a good offensive team. Not much in the way of offensive sets, not much in the way of long or mid range jumpers, bad half court offense, no low post presence, little or no ability to rebound on the offensive side. They have a lot of issues. Really, the only way they reliably score is off transition baskets (they do have some nice finishers). Crowder is a really annoying player...Jonny on the spot, nice hustler, supreme garbage man. He hit a 3 to get MU close in the 2nd half and had the temerity to put his finger to his lips to 'shoosh' the crowd. Not good dude. I see why you had to go to JUCO.

The big run in the 1st half that blew the game open was keyed, as all the big runs this season have been, with some great defense. MU did not score a basket in more than 11 minutes and had a hard time even getting a shot off a number of times.

Melo returned to the game after early foul trouble and helped fuel the charge with solid rebounding and defense, drawing a couple of big charges to get key MU personnel in foul trouble. Triche continued to play at a high level, rebounding, passing and shooting well again. CJ snaked around, getting important baskets and rebounds from time to time and Kris again made some big 3s when they were really needed.

MU also pressed quite a bit. Was not very effective. Ended up helping to get them in serious foul trouble. SU did not try man and did not try to press.

JB subbed pretty freely in the 1st half, though MCW was shunned. In the 2nd half, he reverted to old school ways and played his favorite lineup of DW, BT, CJ, KJ and FM/BK for an extended period. He eventually subbed out BT for Scoop as well. We got tired but as usual, we played good enough to get the W.

Scoop did not have a good game, forced some shots, made some crazy decisions, going 1 on 5 at one time with SU up big. Dion had a bad start but finished strong...he is emerging as our best player in crunch time. His block of a Johnson-Odom 3 point jumper that he turned into a layup was probably the biggest play of the game, and probably clinches Dion as the best trash talker in the conference for this season. Would be remiss not to mention Keita, who had 4 really important points when MU was very close to catching SU. No JS in the 2nd half, no MCW in the game period. Christmas played a few minutes, got in foul trouble, missed an easy short shot and was not a factor. The Lights on the Lake go down tonight. Alas, it is no longer Christmas season.

While I was not impressed with MU's half court offense, I think they play very good defense and will be able to scrape together enough points to win their share of conference games. I am thinking they are heading for a 10-6 BE record. Maybe even 11-5.

Crowd was good. Pretty lively, made some noise. Got into the game when MU made their run and I think the noise may have helped unnerve MU and disrupted their run. Good win. MU gave us a great effort and I think playing them is great preparation for playing Pitt, Nova and UConn, other offensively challenged teams that will give up problems. Playing another close game is helpful too.

Will be interesting to see how many come out for the VU game and how many are wearing orange. Could we bring as many fans as the troubled Cats? If the game were on the weekend, absolutely. We will find out soon.

Skaneatleans? Really? It sounds like some invading alien horde!
Love your analysis though...good insights and summary, thanks.
Just curious, as an -M grad ('85), what would I be called?
Please be nice...

It was as frustrating to watch on TV, tomcat.

Two ways that the refs impacted today's game [beyond the obvious foul trouble to our starting center] are:

[1] there were several times when the refs slowed action down to consult, go to the scorer's table, etc. Took the wind out of our sails to a limited extent, and more importantly enabled Marquette to set their defense several times for our eventual inbound play

[2] the aforementioned foul trouble made Melo play a very, very conservative defensive game. He had that one dangerous stretch where he drew several offensive fouls, but zero blocks today. Advantage: Marquette. Our team defense has been such a weapon all season long, taking a big part of that away and making it more of a half court scrum really hurt our transition game.

And the foul trouble to Melo was all the more frustrating given that Jae Crowder had several obvious push in the backs that weren't called--would have loved for him to have to sit for a lengthy stretch in the second half like Fab had to because of foul trouble.

But bottom line, we found a way to win and survive. This is DEFINITELY the type of game we would have lost last year.

I think Skaneatleans is a new dinner from Stouffers ;)

Thanks for the write up Tom ... the crowd sounded good from TV. There was a chant going on in the second half that I could make out ... WE WANT ... SOMETHING! What was that all about?

What was up with Buzz Williams and his literal standing out on the court during play? They actually had 6 people from MU on the court during action. Is that no longer a rule? Also the refs allowed MU substitutions after the ball had been given to our foul shooter. The ref then went and took the ball away from our foul shooter to allow MU to substitute. Many wierd calls and non-calls. I like the games where one doesn't pay attention to the refs. I actually thought John Cahill was worse than Higgins by far. I thought these guys didn't enforce the rules in today's game and allowed things to almost get out of hand.

What was up with MU taking their timeouts on the court directly under the vistors side basket? They even chased out the old Dunk and Bright contest to SU's end by refusing to move during the timeout. They also restricted and instructed our cheerleaders to move away when they took the court during TO's. Buzz did his best mean Curly Joe impression and really took over Jim Boeheims' court. Was that part of some psychological intimidation or something by Williams? I just didn't get some of his antics. Good coach but strange annoying dude during games.

Cheer I heard reverberate in the 2nd half was "get off the court!" aimed at Williams.

Marq had many good 3pt looks in the second half, due to good ball movement, especially in the right corner (KJs), but I don't think it was all on him.

Yes Cherie! I was going nuts during the game about that. A game is going on and Curley from The Three Stooges is wandering around on the court. I was driving my wife nuts yelling about it.

It reminded me of the game in Manley many years ago (the Mike Lee kicked ball game) vs. St. Johns where Louie Carnasecca literally scurried out onto the court and moved his defenders around while we were bringing the ball up. Then he scurried off. No whistle.

This was a tale of two halves -- makes you wonder which players were terrific during that first half run (Triche), and then what they or the team were doing differently in the second half. Or did Marq change its defense to take away Triche?
Or does BT tighten up for some reason?

Certainly foul trouble for Melo was a big factor in the second half -- we get vulnerable in the paint. But our guards weren't stopping the Marq guards from getting into the lane.

Funny you mention that. Cahill and Jim Burr are both from the Albany area, so I pay closer attention to them when I watch them. Cahill is a little bit different than Burr in that he will do some MAAC games locally and Burr won't. Cahill has done a ton of final fours, and there is no question that he does a decent job, but it seems like every game he does there is something that makes you shake your head and can't comprehend why he is doing it. Maybe it's just that I key on him that I notice it, but I do believe that over the last few years that he has gotten worse.

...and that's bad news, because Higgins has been awful for a long time.

Unfortunately it's the chicken and the egg thing. How many great refs are in their 30's or early 40's. We might be stuck with Higgins and Burr and Cahill for another ten years. But that could be a topic for another day.

This team wins with defense and depth. The half court offense struggles at times. Today was one of the few times where I questioned the focus and the effort on defense and made me wonder about the recent game about PC. Scoop's decision-making must drive JB crazy. CJ was too soft on several shots and probably should have passed the ball on a few of them. CJ had at least 10 more shot attempts than JS. I'm curious to see how the team responds in the next game.

On a positive note, today's performance is really going to give the coaching staff something to ride the team about for the next few days leading up to the Villanova game.

I wouldn't expect us to come out flat or for the players to spend time reading their press clippings these next few days.

As I watched the game, I too thought that the MU's defense looked much like Pitts with the grabbing and the shoving except they were much quicker than Pitt ever was. I can't belive the no calls. Late in the game Crowder came crashing down the lane, over the top of an SU player pushing him out of bounds and grabed a rebound and no call was made! Also, some MU guy came crashing down on Triche's back as he crouched to shoot a 3 and no call. Triche made the three but that was clearly a foul. I don't know if you could see in person but after they reviewed Melo's elbow, one of the refees stood there and shook his finger at Higgins. It looked like he was telling him he should have called the foul and that he has to tighten it up.

That offensive rebound by Crowder where he shoved Brandon out of bounds when Triche clearly had position was a horrible no-call [he also scored on the put back afterwards, so the no-call was a double whammy].

Cahill is by far the worst ref in college hoops. The worst.

Yeah, when your team is struggling there is nothing worse than seeing a play like that allowed to go on. Especially when we're racking up fouls at an astronomical rate in the first 5 minutes of the second half.

I don't need the officials to stop the bleeding, but if they're causing it, they sure as better not be ignoring plays like that. Horrendous.
