Really small crowd. Hard to fathom a guess when the Dome is so empty but I think it was around 2K actually in the seats.

The female student who sang the NA delivered a fairly pedestrian version of the song, but I liked that she struck and held a Pat Benatar pose throughout the song. Solid.

There was a new Stat Girl. The one tonight was an attractive black women. She was more business like with her dress and walking style. Solid.

My favorite player on Cal State was their center. He was a relatively short overweight guy who run with a lovable waddle. I think his name might have been Hoffman. If so, I wonder if he is related to the Hot Dog Hoffmans? Based on body type, I think there is a chance.

The most notable moment of the game was a tough call. Might have been when a fan threw a wayward basketball that careened into the stands back towards the court, and just missed hitting a member of the dance team in the back of her head. Drew a big OOOOOOOEW! from the crowd. Might have been when Trevor got his first touch in an SU game, immediately launched a 3 and hit it. Or (and this one is the one I think took the prize), it might have been the first time Fab was fouled and he not only hit the rim on both FTs, he made both! Solid.

Some general comments:

We played man or pressed almost all game long. The man was generally effective, though the quality of the defense dropped pretty dramatically when the subs came in, especially in the first half, when the subs struggled on the offensive and defensive ends.

Thought Scoop continued his recent practice of passing first, only shooting if really needed, and did it very well. Don't have stats but it seemed he made a number of assists in limited playing time. He took over the game for a while at the start of the second half, which effectively ended any upset hopes for the Thomsonettes. Impressive start for Scoop's senior season.

When Dion and MCW were in the game together, MCW played point. MCW played point exclusively as a matter of fact. Did not have a very good game, played like a nervous rookie and had some bad turnovers. Kind of surprised by this. I think he will play better as the season progresses. His best work happened inside the paint, where he scored a couple of baskets.

BT's best work was not inside the paint. He missed a couple of floaters and a shot that I believe was supposed to be a pass except the youngster he was tossing the ball to didn't go up to finish an alley oop. Didn't shoot great either but had some nice rebounds and a couple nice passes. Was a little more selfish than normal, which surprised me a bit.

Christmas played a little center for a while. Looks like he is going to be in foul trouble a lot; not a surprise for a young big guy. He is a good athlete and is physical and I think he is going to be a good rebounder and defender. Will have good and bad days this season. For the record, he started game one.

At one point Mookie had 4 fouls and 0 points. Looks to be struggling a bit on defense playing forward and is not looking much for his shot on offense. Kind of strange to see.

KJ made some nice plays and looked good. Got in trouble for leaving his man to double someone (his man hit a 3 moments later). CJ made a 3, which I believe matches his season total for 3s for last season. He had some good moments.

I believe Southerland had a couple of air ball 3s. Looked out of sorts, was not ready to shoot, did not have his best game.

Trev worked hard on defense, hard on offense, played quite well I thought.

JB was very active and energetic on the sideline, gesturing vividly to his team as he talked to it during the timeouts. He still has a lot of energy. Wore a weird colored blue coat with grey pants. They clashed. I assume Juli is travelling or was too ill to lay out JB's outfit. I hope she is okay.

But the story of the night is the story of the preseason, and that is the story of the new and improved Fab Melo. He was very active, assertive, strong to the hoop, strong on the boards, strong on defense. He isn't the Hispanic Bill Russell and he won't be an AA this season but he is truly improved, looks like he is having fun and is playing with a dramatically higher level of confidence right now. Great to see.

thanks Tomcat - what was your impression of Dion's game tonight? and anything to report on Baye?

I wonder if MCW is sore tonight. That center set a screen on MCW which he didn't see coming and bounced off him. Then a few minutes later, MCW took his life into his own hands and stood tall in the paint and drew a charge on him. Ouch.

The most notable moment (outside of Melo's play) was Autrey's little daughter (about 2), running onto the court during play. Even JB got a laugh out of it.

She looks tall for 2. Hillsman should make friends with Red.

Maybe she was 3. LOL. Hard to tell from upstairs. was funny though.

That was hysterical. Adrian's face was priceless as she ran across the court from the stands. It was like he couldn't believe what he was seeing and the look he gave towards the stands where she came from was so funny. Someone was in trouble -lol.

He had to be thinking "here I am in my first game in the Dome as an SU coach and right in the middle of play my daughter runs on the court"

At another point he had 5 fouls and 0 points!

Thanks Tomcat, excellent and amusing report as always.

Just one note re Fab as we're likely to be discussing him a lot this year. Might want to say he's not the Latino Bill Russell, as Brazilians don't consider themselves Hispanic.

Dion looked good. He is moving and jumping better this year and played a solid floor game. His trademark stare into the 3rd level stands behind the basket after dunks is in midseason form.

Keita, who was repeatedly called Baye Keita on the PA system (he apparently is sans Moussa this season) was active, had some blocked shots and did okay. Drew a charge. Look for him to do that more often this season. He played against a short fat guy for Cal State (the hot dog king), they joustled for position a lot and I thought Baye did a pretty good job keeping up out of the prime real estate down low. Not really active on the offensive end, but he showed no signs of being hampered by the hand/wrist injury he suffered last season.

I wish Baye was a little stronger. He may have some problems with experienced big guys with a lot of strength.

cool - thanks Tomcat - it sounds like the 5 position will be well represented this year between Melo and Keita. Will be interesting to see how big Dion's role will be this year.

The Cal State center sounds quite entertaining - seen him referred to as the 'hot dog king' and 'discover card Peggy' in different write-ups. Good stuff.

Can't blame Juli for her husband's wardrobe choice last night. I'm pretty sure she was sitting across the way with Autry's daughter on her lap. Perhaps it was her fault the little girl got loose and made a run for it. J'accuse!

Providence must be kicking themselves for missing out on this guy.

Good takes, Tomcat.

Rak has Etan Thomas syndrome right now, which means jump and swat at anyone that drives the lane. I used one of the fouls as a teaching moment to my son. When they did the replay you could clearly see that he had committed himself to blocking the shot. He left his feet before the offensive player left his. Pretty easy call there. At that point Baye had already taken a charge in the game. I told my son that those plays were the difference between experience and freshman chutzpah. Had Rak stood his ground and let the offensive player make his move, he could have avoided the foul and actually drawn the charge. No need for a block in that situation.

Overall I was impressed with Rak's activity around the basket. He needs to get stronger, for sure, but he will be dangerous down there both on offense and defense. He had some nice put-backs in traffic.

Rumor has it that Autry's daughter said to JB "Tomcat says you don't match". No verification of that, though. ;)

It was like watching a completely different player out there. This guy looked slim, athletic, mobile. He is going to be special.

So, hopefully no 5 second appearances in games like last year? Someone else can occupy the dog house it appears.

At 6-9 Carl Hoffman is not short. His mom is a regular on the board and she said her son will flatten you next year if you don't take back the fat remark.

1. Hoffman is not 6'9. He is maybe 6'7 1/2 on a good day.
2. His mom Suzanne Hoffman, a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, California. She is not a member of the board.
3. Carl Hoffman is fat. A waist size over 50 inches is not something a skinny man owns.

I give the kid credit, maxing his athletic potential for sure
