Bad crowd. Small, quiet, dead. My guess is that there were about 7K actually in the Dome.
The student section was also small but at least made some noise from time to time. I think the SSS did the NA...don't remember anyone singing it.
SU opened in the 2-3 and stayed with it most of the time. They did press some a few times. Both were at least somewhat effective though Albany was able to get a lot of good looks and they drew a lot of fouls. We appeared to dominate them on the boards by a major margin. Especially in the first half.
Great games for KJ, Keita and Southerland. Another game were pretty much everyone played well. Albany is not a good team. They had a couple of beefy white kids inside and some good athletes. #20 from the DR was quite impressive, scoring all over the place. What is he doing at this back water road kill capital program?
Albany pressured us full court for a long time. This was not effective. They played us zone most of the time. It was not effective. They were better at getting back than Manhattan was (pretty much impossible to be worse) and we were forced to run a half court offense a lot more than Monday night.
Tim Higgins confirmed my worst nightmare by showing up and calling the game. Burr has already made an appearance this season too. I guess Billy Joel was right. Only the good die young.
What else? Dion had another solid game. Was able to dribble by the flat footed mouth breathing Great Danes to get to the basket for a layup whenever he wanted. Some very nice passing by Scoop, BT, MCW and DW.
I believe this was the first game for Baye in double figures. He was rocking the double high sock look that is all the rage in Senegal, and running back on defense in that elegant and regal stride he does so well. Good to see him have a solid game. RC had a bit quieter game tonight. I like watching MCW go about his business out there. Smart player who does a lot of little things well.
And JS continues to play at a far higher level than he was playing last season. It is like his heart has grown three sizes bigger overnight, in Grinch like fashion. Speaking of the Grinch, Mr Excitement's Dr Suess/Sesame Street fusion experiment in public speaking was in rare form tonight. "shove from above", "swish for Triche", "hoop for Scoop", "deuce for the Cuse", etc.. etc..
Anyway, JS is playing very relaxed and self assured right now. I hope he is able to sustain it all season long.
Our defense was not very good in the 2nd half...lots of reaching fouls, lazy defense, leaving people alone for easy 3 pointers, etc. JB was mad after the game because the young defenders were not able to focus on and overplay the 2 good scoring threats Albany had. Hopefully they will learn from this.
Anyway, I thought it was a good effort. Continue to like the way this team shares the ball and works together to get good shots. The rebounding effort was impressive and if it were done against a good D1 team I would be impressed a little more. While the level of competition was low, KJ looked good...appears to be throwing off the cobwebs from his knee issues and is rounding into form nicely.
Albany brought their dance team to the game. They actually were not bad. I liked the purple and gold colors for the Great Danes. Wish they had a big Great Dane mascot walking around all game slobbering on people. Perhaps next time.
So far, so good. V Tech looms next Wednesday (it is only to look past Colgate as they are indeed Colgate).
