At the beginning of March, my travel plans for the month consisted of the Hardwood Club dinner, the ACC tourney and a three-day trip to Augusta for the Masters. Instead, I cancelled a month of my life to follow the SU basketball team on its unexpected magical NCAA journey.
On Sunday, March 6, I flew to Syracuse for the Hardwood Club Dinner. The next day, I flew to DC for the ACC tournament. On March 16, I flew to St Louis, returning home on March 21. On March 23, I flew to Chicago, returning home on March 28. On March 30, I flew to Houston….. then on April 5, I flew from Houston to Augusta for a long-scheduled trip to the Masters (for which I had won four passes) Finally, tonight I flew home to CT.
Over 33 days, I was home exactly six nights.
Along the way, I saw six basketball games (four of them wonderful), got a fabulous private tour of the NASA Space Center (thanks to HoustonCuse who works there); attended an Astros game at Minute Maid Stadium (thanks to CusefanATL's cousin who works for the Astros); took a wonderful historic architectural river cruise in Chicago; spent time with a lot of great posters; spoke with the Vice President of the United States, and ate at some fabulous restaurants (including Tony’s and Broadway Oyster Bar in St Louis, some great steak houses in Chicago, Mark’s American and Pappas Steakhouse in Houston)...and at the Masters where the food is delicious and inexpensive, especially the peach ice cream sandwiches.
On the other hand, I stayed at a hotel in St Louis whose name was denoted by only a temporary vinyl banner hung across its front… and where I had a room with no window (which I was told is probably illegal). And I learned it's almost impossible to get a last-minute flight between Houston and Augusta the day after the NCAA tourney ends which coincides with the Masters. I also discovered that Houston is the definition of urban sprawl.
As a final note, I have to salute Obie9 and Headmaster who increased their away-game winning streak to 10 by driving to St Louis and Chicago before it came to an end in Houston. I feel personally bad about this; I told them they had to come to Houston because if they did not come….and we lost….I would hold them responsible. So, good fans that they are, they came to Houston at some personal sacrifice, only to watch their streak and the season end last Saturday night. But, Obie and Headmaster, you and the team .. you all did your best.
