Naheem McLeod Transferring to Syracuse (5/15/23)

Taylor is never going to be a great rebounder. Or maybe even a great shooter. But he does everything. Works hard. Plays defense. Gets some rebounds. Makes a few shots. Makes a few passes. He will always be a net positive. Taylor and Copeland give coach Autry some options.

Taylor is not a 30 minute per game starter at the elite level. He’s an energy and glue guy off the bench. Copeland is much better and it isn’t even close. Not sure why they’re lumped in here with one another.

I agree with you. But both contribute in their own way. I don’t understand the criticism of Taylor on this board.

will Patterson or Carey get minutes?

And here is where I chime in to ask; Why the hell not?
The most frustrating aspect about FHCJB was his unwillingness to bend on lineup. Fact is, Carey/Patterson should get spot duty now & then, to allow Maliq a breather.
A worn down, hobbled, Maliq B should be avoided at all costs. A couple of strategic minutes from the youngsters could work wonders in March.

Question is this - what did he add that Brown doesn't, other than height?

Intimidation. If you ever played the game, and you have to shoot over a guy who is half a foot taller than you, that get's in your head, even if you are a 6-9 or 6-10 big man, who is used to being bigger than most of your defenders. Ten minutes of MacLeod helps change the tone of a game. Same with Hima, as opposed to Maliq Brown. Maliq could be an All-American PF, but he is not at that level, if he has to play center for us.

While Autry said that has been the plan, if Syracuse experiences more health issues among its other centers, Patterson would play if needed.

“Anything can happen,’' Autry said. “You just never know. We could (have) another injury or anything could happen. We feel like we hae a good frontline, but you just never know. But that’s where we’re at right now.’'

Asked about McLeod, who has missed SU’s last two games, Autry said he had not had a chance to talk to the school’s medical staff for an update on the 7-4 junior. McLeod reportedly saw a foot specialist on Friday. Autry said he hoped to speak with the medical staff later Monday afternoon.

Feel like you have a good frontline? Who are you kidding? Come on Red…….

Based on the limited sample of this past Saturday, I think Carey could give a few minutes.

We need height - especially with people playing over Taylor. We have no rim protection and no length. It's why McLeod is missed and why Carey and/or Hima should get run to see if on that particular night either can play without imitating a deer in headlights.

All this coach speak means to me is Patterson likely isn't even as good as Carey.

That's a scary thought. He looks skinny, but you're right, I would have burned his redshirt by now, if he's any good.

This is another situation where a player is not being utilized in the way that would best allow them to shine, which is frustrating to many of us. It's not Taylor's fault. It isn't Red's fault either, it just is what it is with Benny having his issues and the need to try to get something out of JT.

I think you nailed it. He wasn’t even a factor in high school. Going to take a while if it ever happens for Patterson.
