I don't like ignoring history. Basketball didn't start when the NCAA finally got around to putting on a tournament. Yes, NCs won before the NCAA tournament might in some cases be more questionable than ones after it started. And in some cases, there is no way this is true.
It should be noted that the NCAA tournament started as a tournament for the schools not invited to the NIT. It took years before it came close to matching the quality of the NIT tournament.
And it should be noted that the NCAA tournament was small and subject to crazy rules that greatly affected the quality of the field and the legitimacy of the eventual champion. This was true for a very long time.
No issues with schools proud of their Helms NCs. If they want to put up banners, go for it. At long as the banners indicate the type of championship claimed.
