This article is infuriating - Carrier Dome roof renovation will improve natural lighting ‘a little bit’

ETFE is the premier/ most technologically advanced roofing material used today but yet we declined to use it because the sun might get in Jim’s eyes during basketball games.

As a result, let’s elect to use material that is inferior to what others are doing in 2019 (ie. Vikings stadium). What a wasted opportunity. I cannot wait for him to leave. If it was up to whichever sport had the most revenue potential, basketball players would be wearing sunglasses to future home games.

I'm not enthusiastic that this is essentially the same material that the roof is already made from. Tired of this pillow look. And the pillow look is tired. Better look a great degree different from what there is now.

HOWEVER, where would basketball play so that football and lacrosse could have natural light? There is no other option BUT to dim the amount natural light that comes through the building from above. Just not another option. Mens and womens basketball is played in the Dome ...and they ain't going anywhere else. No way would a casual fan want to feel like they are watching basketball outdoors, either

Not sure where you got that this was JB's fault.

The games are all televised. Television wants games where you can see what is happening. A game at 2 pm on a sunny day would have tremendous glare. It would be hard for spectators and players as well. Do you remember day games at the old stadium the Cowboys used to play at and what a challenge they were for television?

That is what is gained using PTFE. We lose looking up and sometimes seeing a blue sky, and maybe some clouds. I think the case for using ETFE is a lot stronger on exterior walls, especially those overlooking Onondaga Valley.

You can't wait for who to leave? Wildhack?

Must be Wildhack since he's the only one quoted in the article. JB wasn't even interviewed.

I've gotta agree that it's disappointing. Why make promises early if you know it wont happen...having the open natural light feel was IMO the main thing in making the dome feel more modern. Now we may not even notice the new roof at all

You realize the new roof will have a bigger opening for natural light to get in than the existing roof and that the PTFE material will let in more light (i.e. be more translucent) than the existing one?

Yuck. 45% light reduction wasn't enough?

I wish they had found a way to use etfe, and found away to block light for basketball. Utilize the moving jumbotron to unravel glare reduction? Sheesh...

Honestly...who cares?

Who the hell goes to a game and whines because they can’t see enough natural light?

Who goes to a game to “notice the roof”?

I don’t want to notice the roof. I just don’t want it to fall on me. I’m watching the game.

Ha!

What I got from the article, is that the original 45% light blocking material will not be used, in favor of a higher blocking one with the same characteristics we have now.

When we're playing basketball games at 9 PM on the ACC Network, there won't be much sunlight anyways.

No one. Many were excited for the dome to have a new look, and feel. Sounds like that's not happening .

My takeway:

Pretty good job on the article, but it's lacking in specifics that would answer back-and-forths like what Wiseman and Tom are talking about, mostly because it relies on a lot of vague quotes from Sala and Wildspicer. "I think it will be as bright as it is today" doesn't offer anything in the way of objective explanation.

Someone mentioned SU's lack of public outreach about this project the other day. I can't disagree. They can't just put out a spec sheet on this job, comparing materials, what percentage of the roof covered with which materials, what percentage of the roof was covered with the old material, etc.?

The "power outage" quote was also weird. Sala won't sit at the scorer's table worrying about a power outage and delay in turning on the lights anymore? OK. But that's never happened at an SU basketball or football game, so it's probably not cause for concern.

I think a lot of us just feel that if the school is gonna invest this kind of money into the Dome roof and thereby make a change to a well known skyline entity, as well as a large portion of THE entertainment structure in the city for decades to come, then it will hopefully be something truly memorable and not done with cost savings in mind only. And I realize that comes down to a university issue and not just an athletics one

Right. If SU wanted to set the record straight, they could, but my understanding is that the Dome will go from having a translucent fiberglass fabric ceiling suspended from cables to having a translucent fiberglass fabric ceiling suspended from cables. It'll be 16 feet higher and the weight will be borne by a crown truss rather than air pressure (which won't affect the fan experience too much since they don't open the blow-out doors anymore anyway).

Ultimately it doesn't matter too much, it's only of interest to weird internet fans in the off-season, but it highlights how much this administration still struggles with communication.

?

Minneapolis had to wrap their dome for the final four. Imagine doing that on a hoops / football weekend and costs.

Did you read the part about what they had to do in Minneapolis to stage the Final Four games? Manufacture and install darkening panels to the tune of $4.6M. Just what they need--another on-going multimillion dollar expense.

Edit: Beat me to it by a minute Bayside. :)

go around and look at any gym that had windows letting light in and see how much of a failure it is.. playing indoors with windows not blocking most of the direct sunlight just doesnt work.

opaque to let light in is fine. clear enough to see out will not work.. nothing better than looking up into a clear roof and getting blinded on a punt return.

It's not really the windows that pose a problem (think of where the Pacers play their games), it's a clear roof that would be ridiculous. It's no wonder they're not pursuing that. Remember the aircraft carrier game debacle? There's a reason the Astrodome ceiling got painted right away and no other dome has been built with a clear roof. No complaints here.

But SU's inability to communicate a simple, fact-based message about this project that it obviously wants to create fan buzz is head-scratching.

My take (right or wrong) is that the university is basically just replacing the current air supported roof with the modern 2020 version, and trying to package that as a larger renovation than it really is. Someone at the University, or it could have been one of their early partners, made a huge mistake releasing the renderings of the Dome with an EFTE roof connected to the Arch. That visual got everyone excited, but I'm assuming it is what SU would have done on an unlimited budget. I'm fine with them replacing the roof and making a few small upgrades, but I think they're trying to oversell something this is not.
