Natural Light

Its going to be more like Vancouver's stadium. They had the air supported roof that developed a rip so they had similar translucent material held up by a an external exo-shell. Alittle different because they did have an inner ring open air portion that we won't have.

Yes, kudos for the due diligence that was done.

Nothing would make me believe that JB didn’t have a say in this decision. I get it, he’s been the face of a program for 40 years and if his opinion isn’t shared he’s likely going to say something about it. Regardless, it’s a missed opportunity to add a significant benefit to multiple other sports programs one of which had exponentially more revenue potential than basketball.

SU is one of three schools that makes more than $30M in hoops and $40M in football, of course basketball should have a say. You really think football has "exponentially" more revenue potential than basketball?

What additional revenue is natural lighting going to drive? You think people are going to make a buying decision based on the roof material over other factors?

The "power outage" quote was also weird. Sala won't sit at the scorer's table worrying about a power outage and delay in turning on the lights anymore? OK. But that's never happened at an SU basketball or football game, so it's probably not cause for concern.
I know nothing, but reading between the lines of that comment and others where Wildhack exclaims excitement for the scoreboard leads me to believe the lighting will not be the crazy color changing multi-media introduction kind.

Well it may not be crazy but JW mentions the ability to put sound and lights inside the center hung scoreboard almost every time he mentions the score board.

I think he is pretty excited about the entertainment capabilities that the score board provide far beyond the actual score board itself.

At this point, no. My guess - if they ever do anything above the 300s it will be luxury boxes but not anytime soon. And that would require elevator support and blowing out those endzone walls.
I guess I mean specifically the venting panels over the top rows of the 300s in the end zones. Those vents as they are could be useful without the worry of air support.

This is the look I was hoping for:

The multi-media introduction kind are a separate projector/computer/software system.
I agree they'll be new LED lighting though without any special effects inherent in the lights.

They could install some stained glass cutouts to tie into faith and family day.

Anyone else notice that the Romans had a retractable roof 2000 years ago? CRAZY!

(I read that sailors would rig it up for hot days)

But could you bring an ice cold beer back to your seat?

Keep people from climbing all over me to get out of the aisle 17 times a game and I’ll never complain again.

When the Christians played the Lions, they used real lions.
As many as 11000 animals slaughtered in a day.

Apologies. It was a great pic, and I spent the last hour reading about the Coliseum. Thanks for the pic!

They did find a simple solution for shade, though...You'd think we cou... Never mind.

No, because the beer sucked. If you were a free man, over 35 you could drink wine, but anyone else, including your wife, could be put to death.

Be nice if we had Vendors walking the aisles to keep people in their seats.

Yeah...my first thought was how the new roof will impact basketball. Specifically, whether sunlight seeping in may have some impact on the Court.

I have been to US Bank Stadium (Skol Vikings!) for an afternoon game. Certainly the shadows and sunlight have an impact to some extent but football is one thing and basketball another. Very interested to see how it looks...

Go Orange!!!

Disappointing but not surprising. That was one of my initial thoughts when I posted the above last year. You always hope with technological advances and brilliant people in the industry and on campus that they would figure out a cost effective way to make it work but we are apparently not there yet.

I am attaching some of the photos from US Bankthat I took during the inaugural season. They give you an idea of how the natural light seeks onto the field despite half of the roof being opaque. It is so incredible and we had the good fortune of being there for when they had the huge swinging doors open.

Ultimately, a redo here will be successful if...

It is aesthetically pleasing to some extent on the outside
The scoreboard and lighting has a wow effect
The sound system is improved
It is configured in a way to allow for more stadium-type large concerts

I think they will hit on a bunch of these and the renovation itself leads us to keeping the games on campus which is what makes The Dome so unique and so special.
