NBA Thread 2020-21 Season

Milwaukee had top 10 protection on their 2022 pick they owed Cleveland.
It’s now an unprotected pick.

So Giannis better resign now.
They wouldn’t have high picks from 2022 til 2027.

So what's the deal with this? Why does Cleveland get incentivized to also get better conditions on the pick? Is it basically because the open-endedness of that pick was messing with the Bucks ability to trade future 1sts?

This is huge for the Bucks. Means we could theoretically spend up to $8 mil of the MLE or even the full thing if we get out of Jon Leuer's contract. And also simply means we might get an actual helpful player with #42 with how deep this draft is.

Also, free agency hasn't started yet, but there are sign and trade deals?

Wouldn't that require "tampering" under the current definition?

Bingo. If they couldn’t ensure their 2022 was traded then they couldn’t trade their 2024 pick since the 2022
Pick would have gone to 2023.

Cleveland got a better pick and leveraged an extra pick because Milwaukee had to meet New Orleans terms.

Figured as much. Nice for them.

The Pelicans future pick page now is absurd. Pelicans vs Thunder battling for biggest war chest. Pelicans will actually be competitive this year while OKC is going in the tank.

Was having a hard time trying to figure out if George Hill was a positive or negative asset right now but then saw he shot 46% from 3 this year.

Yeah he's still a good bench player and a good trade chip as a $9 mil, essentially expiring contract.

Any chatter about the Bucks potentially selecting Elijah Hughes? Would be a good team for him to land with. Them or the Mavs, imo.

I haven't seen any chatter from anyone about Hughes but that's definitely in the range of where Hughes is likely to go.

I'm personally hoping we take a PG there just because I know there will be good ones available due to how deep this class of PGs is but as far as wings go, I'd be happy to have Elijah Hughes, Ty-Shon Alexander, or Immanuel Quickley.

How about Bledsoe and the 13th to ATL for Dedman and the 6th? Pels also have the 24th as well.

Leaves Pels with Hill, Lonzo, JJ and Hart, Alexander as well. Not sure what they plan to do with Didi Louzada, the kid they drafted last year who I believe is still in Brazil or Australia?

Back up PG who can facilitate the half court offense which is Lonzo's weakness as well

I assume the Bucks have something lined up with Giannis now. (If not they are crazy). Still a great trade for the Pelicans, as there is always a risk that things go sour for whatever reason (especially since this moves out to 2025 and 2027), and at worse the 3 first round picks are future trade capital

But as for how this relates to the Raptors, the assumed Giannis Bucks signing at least avoids a worse case scenario If Giannis had not signed with the Bucks, the Raps would be one of the players for him due to the Ujiri relationship, but in all likelihood would have lost the race. But they would have needed to make some tough decisions this offseason to keep flexibility for 2021. And this would have resulted in an assets being lost for nothing. Not a concern now.

Good point. I think this changes plans for several teams. Heat can sign their guys back and give Bam a long term deal now without worrying about preserving cap space for Giannis.

Posted on the Raptors board, where some people are freaking out and want to clear all the salary rebuild through the draft or create a Free Agency Super Team.

One person posted "Can't we just enjoy watching a good team play winning basketball, instead of hoping that they'll get rid of everybody every week?" It's an important message for many fans.

Being in the 50 win area is not a disaster. It means some years you are not a true contender, but then you are not in the mediocre treadmill territory either especially if you have some younger pieces... you are one good re-tool trade, one or two good late picks, a bit of luck away from the conference finals / finals. You set up yourself to go for it later.

People that demand a full rebuild don't realize that teams are often stuck there seemingly forever. The desire to tank in Toronto was no greater amongst fans than in 2014... for Andrew Wiggins. Tanking is not always the solution -- sometimes it makes sense but often it backfires or gets team back to 50 win and nothing more.

So this latest rumor about the Rockets all leaving town because the owner is a big Trump guy.

this seems like this could have huge ramifications for the league. In a negative way for the players

If Holliday was so great (as he’s being made out to be now ) why were he and AD unable to do jack squat ?

They weren’t beating the Warriors.
AD, Holiday, Rondo swept the Blazers in 2018 playoffs.
They were never beating the big dogs out West.

Holiday is a solid player Milwaukee overpaid but they felt they had too.
It’s not like when the Clippers overpaid for George to get Kawhi but it’s a similar process.

Where have you seen that?

I tend to think Holiday is overrated but am hoping Budenholzer and the Bucks supporting cast can help elevate him more, but to answer the question, neither Holiday or Davis are all that special in terms of creating shots and the rest of their team was basically made up of guys that shouldn't be playing in the NBA.

I'd also say it's unfair to say they didn't do jack squat. It was hell trying to get into the playoffs in the West and the one time Davis and Holiday were both healthy they went 48-34 with their 3rd best player being a half season of Cousins and a half season of Nikola Mirotic. And after that their best player was Etwaun Moore, who is a league minimum caliber player.

Being in that 50+ range works because a few breaks or injuries in the playoffs and you're in the conf finals. It's those teams stuck in that 35-45 win range for multiple years that are the ones that need to just blow it up.

James Harden would lose 12.5 million dollars from his salary in taxes a year going from Houston to Brooklyn.
