NBA Thread 2020-21 Season

I tend to think Holiday is overrated but am hoping Budenholzer and the Bucks supporting cast can help elevate him more, but to answer the question, neither Holiday or Davis are all that special in terms of creating shots and the rest of their team was basically made up of guys that shouldn't be playing in the NBA.

I'd also say it's unfair to say they didn't do jack squat. It was hell trying to get into the playoffs in the West and the one time Davis and Holiday were both healthy they went 48-34 with their 3rd best player being a half season of Cousins and a half season of Nikola Mirotic. And after that their best player was Etwaun Moore, who is a league minimum caliber player.
Bucks should fire Budenhozier.
He really showed he was dumb in the bubble playoffs.
Does Giannis like him?

I think Bud is still one of the best coaches in the league and yes, Giannis likes him (but he also liked Kidd, Larry Drew, Thon Maker, MCW, Tony Snell, etc.)

Boston could use a Carmelo off their bench.
They don’t have much scoring off their bench.
I think he could fit their especially if they trade Hayward.

James Harden would lose 12.5 million dollars from his salary in taxes a year going from Houston to Brooklyn.

That seems off -- is it possible it is 12.5% of his salary?
I saw the maximum NY state tax rate is 8.82% and NY City is 3.88%.
On a $40 million salary, it is still an extra $5.0 million or so, so it is not insignificant either.

How is that possible? New york income tax is like 8-9%, give or take, know Texas is 0%. You're only supposed to pay that rate based on the time you're in NY, but even assuming thats 8-9% on all of his income, you're talking like $4 million or so.

Am I missing something obvious?

He would be playing more games in states with higher income tax laws.
He would be going from 45 games in TX.
To 3 games in TX.

MA-1 extra game
PA-1 extra game
DC- 1 extra game.

The Eastern conference states have higher taxes than the non-CA western teams.

Right but 12.5 million is around 30% of his salary, no single state has an income tax that high, let alone an increase of 30%

Posted on the Raptors board, where some people are freaking out and want to clear all the salary rebuild through the draft or create a Free Agency Super Team.

One person posted "Can't we just enjoy watching a good team play winning basketball, instead of hoping that they'll get rid of everybody every week?" It's an important message for many fans.

Being in the 50 win area is not a disaster. It means some years you are not a true contender, but then you are not in the mediocre treadmill territory either especially if you have some younger pieces... you are one good re-tool trade, one or two good late picks, a bit of luck away from the conference finals / finals. You set up yourself to go for it later.

People that demand a full rebuild don't realize that teams are often stuck there seemingly forever. The desire to tank in Toronto was no greater amongst fans than in 2014... for Andrew Wiggins. Tanking is not always the solution -- sometimes it makes sense but often it backfires or gets team back to 50 win and nothing more.

Ive said it before but the whole “rings” obsession that has crept into sports fan talk is so bad. Like, if your first comment when someone brings up...Melo, Barkley, Malone, etc. is “Lulz, no rings” rather than how great a player he was...I have zero interest in talking sports with you. Same goes for teams that were great that never quite got over the hump...early 90s Blazers are a great example. Great team!

At some point it became “win it all or you suck” for a lot of fans. It’s annoying.

Hasn't this guy owned the Rockets for a few years now though? It can't be new information that he's a Trump guy.

How much do you think players make after taxes?

The no income tax states are huge because of the potential loss to taxes.

It’s not 12.5 million I was wrong Harden would lose 13.6 million if he went to Brooklyn.

I would tend to roll my eyes at this report. In all likelihood, it's more just the fact that players realize the team needs to spend more money to be a true contender and the owner wants to significantly cut back on costs and therefore they feel like they're wasting their time.

If we were to assume the Trump thing is true though, NBA players have clearly started to care more about politics this year than they had in previous years.

Don't forget the actual wealth of the owners for whom he would be playing.

Tillman is obviously not broke, but he's not in the greatest standing right now.

The Nets owner is stupid wealthy and I'm sure there are opportunities through him to help make up any gaps on top of being in the #1 media market.

Yeah but you said per year. That's $13.6 over the next 3 years total, which is in line with the number I estimated (around 4 per year).

13.6 million total over 3 years as per the article, which is in line with my annual calculation of About 5 million.

I thought you were saying 12.5 million annually.
