NBA Thread 2021-22 Season

Smart is good, but I agree. Robert Williams is a menace on defense.
He certainly allows the rest of those guys to sell out on the perimeter. When he came out with about 3 minutes to go for offense there was zero resistance for Curry and Wiggins getting to the rim.

I think Smart(a lot like Draymond) won the award based on reputation and being a bit of a charley hustle.

I also just can't buy a guard should really be a DPOY. Great big men just impact the game so much more defensively.

I think the same about Draymond and the Warriors. Wiggins for sure is better.

This one i can't sign off on. Wiggins has been a beast this series though. And Draymond doesn't exactly seem like himself, so if you want to say Wiggins has been a better defender than Draymond this series I can buy it. But Draymond at his best is an absolute defensive force.

Agree re the guard. Has to be a big wing or, in reality, it's just Giannis. Which I think is the real answer.

Wiggins is playing out of his mind this series. He deserves a lot of credit. Draymond might still have his super high bball IQ, but Wiggins is the dude for on ball defense that is the man right now for them.

No shade at Draymond, he impacts the game in a lot of ways that aren't in the popular stat sheets.

Poole with another buzzer beater!

Primed for this 4th quarter! Should’ve started the game an hour earlier and I’m going to bed at friggin midnight on a Monday, but let’s goooo! I finally got a decent hoop game that matters for like the first time since the damn bubble.
Thankfully that didn't come back to haunt my Under 210.5 bet

Apparently, the NBA is so embarrassed by this particular blown call that they decided to scrub the footage from the internet.

I’m sure Tony Brothers ran over to stare Udoka down after this farce of a call.

Just can’t stop thinking about how badly the Celtics beat themselves last night with so many terrible passes. Tatum can get so weak with his passes and Smart tries to force way too many long passes assuming Brown will go up and get the ball. Arrrgggghhhhhh!!!!

Landry Fields is the new GM at the Hawks at 33. Unfortunately this news brings me back to the summer of 2012 (we are almost at the 10 year anniversary) when then Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo (aka BC, aka collar boy, aka fortunate son), tried to play 4D chess in early Free Agency and failed miserably.

The Players in Colangelo's 4D Chess Game Gone Bad
a) Steve Nash - UFA last with Phoenix, still a solid player but on solid decline at 37 years old. Reportedly interested in two teams. Knicks and the Raptors.
b) Landry Fields - A Knicks RFA with 2 years in the league. Smart player, good D, but something has clearly went wrong in year 2 -- his 3pt% falls from 39% to 25%, and his FT% falls from 77% to 56%. Suns apparently like him a lot.
c) The Knicks - At 36-30 in 2012 with Melo and Stoudemire, seems like a mutual interest landing spot for Nash. They have no cap space but are looking at a sign and trade to obtain Nash.
d) The Raptors - At 23-43 in 2012, the Raptors shouldn't be going after Nash with their free cap space, but BC is willing to throw a large 3 year deal at him (more than others can offer)
e) The Suns - The Suns are moving on from Nash. Willing to do a sign and trade, apparently very very interested in Landry Fields in a sign and trade with the Knicks.

So its free agency day.
1. BC immediately makes a very rich RFA offer sheet to Landry Fields of 3/18million on day one of free agency which Fields happily and quickly accepts.
2. BC now thinks he has the Knicks in a pickle. While the Knicks can still match the Landry Fields offer sheet, they can no longer trade him or use him in a sign and trade for Nash. As a matched RFA he cannot be traded for an entire season. This essentially closes the door on any sign and trade potential between the Suns and Knicks, and closes the door on Nash going to the Knicks.
3. BC is ecstatic about this 4D chess move thinking this will lock up Nash. Reportedly he calls Nash to close the deal and Nash tells BC to go **** himself. Who would have guessed that Nash would be pissed at a GM taking his preferred option away from him?
4. Furious with the Raptors and BC, Nash ends up signing a deal with the Lakers who do a sign and trade with the Suns. He does not end up in either New York or Toronto.
5. Knicks do not match the rich offer sheet for Fields knowing something is wrong with him based on his significant decline in shooting in year 2.
6. Raps end up with Landry Fields, with no due diligence or medical check. Shortly after signing, they determine he has a degenerative elbow condition and essentially he can no longer take any jumpshots. In 107 games with the Raptors, he takes a total of 21 three point shots, hitting 2 of them.

At the end of the day the Raptors were better off not getting Nash which was a terrible BC target. But they still ended up with an overpaid and injured Landry Fields out of this. So bad - so BC.

Apparently some loud rumblings out there that the Raptors are interested in Rudy Gobert. Not really sure how I feel about this -- he is 2-8 years older than the core of the team, and seems like he struggles with matchups in the playoffs.

Per the link below "The Toronto Raptors have emerged as the favorite to land Rudy Gobert via trade at even money (+100) according to MyBookie.ag."

Tatum and Brown (especially Brown) are way too loose with the ball on drives.

Great trip down memory lane. I remember this now. I'm pretty sure I was sold on the Knicks getting Nash.

Rudy would kick ass in the east.

He doesn't have an issue with playoff matchups. Nobody else on his squad defends.

I agree. He would do what Williams does for Boston, but better, and more expensively so it's a tough call.

Good to hear. Seems like you are more upset with Mitchell than Gobert. That being said Raptors will have to amend their scatter / hard contest / high switch D to fit with Gobert's obvious D strengths.

Still concerned about his age and how it fits into Raptors timeline - I am big into making trades that fit with the teams franchise success curve.

I'm sure he would help the team next few years, but the assets we give up for him (probably guys like OG Anunoby) make more sense long-term. The Raptors will be good next year but are not championship level either even with Boert.

And I know that Danny Ainge will ask for a lot because that is what he does.

I am 100% on team "trade Mitchell."

The two defensive bigs that keep coming up for the Bulls this offseason are Rudy Gobert (trade) and Mitchell Robinson (free agent). Ayton has some as well.

And he can guard 1-5. People discount his play because of the histrionics.

I noticed that too. I wonder if he’s like KD and wears shoes that are larger than they need to be.
And what about Pritchard, the smallest guy on the floor, stepping out of bounds in the corner at least once a game?

He has a real issue dribbling. At least at this level of competition. Feels like he’s trying to compensate for that with his body and it’s just a mess

Tatum isn’t exactly a dribbling wizard, either.

Both can only get to the basket if they go right. If they go left it's going to be a step back jumper. Golden State has done a good job picking up on this in the last couple of games.

He came in and was a full mess for like four possessions and then Ime had to take him out. That was kind of crazy. Started with the out of bounds play after the timeout.

It seems like forcing Brown to put the ball on the floor has become a thing since the Bucks series when Jrue Holiday was picking him up. I never even heard it mentioned prior to that. It's interesting, not that Brown isn't an exceptional talent and does a ton of other stuff well but his handle certainly isn't one of them

Christian Wood to the Mavs for basically nothing?

Luka getting some help?
