A mid-‘80s Celtics/Lakers game is a horrible example. The late ‘80s Pistons changed how defense was played, then Riley turned it up a notch with the Knicks in the ‘90s.

The late 90/early 2000s Pistons and Spurs are why the rules were changed. They were the most physical defensive teams ever. No one could score on those squads.
