Do any of you envision a future in the Dino Babers era where we regularly expect to beat these teams? If so, what year do you expect us to turn the corner?

Pitt and NC State are doable this year. With this offense I could see year 2-3 beating them regularly, a lot of mid-low ACC teams are going to have lots of issues keeping up with this O.

Interesting question. While I am certainly excited for Dino era to start and understand that there will be a talent upgrade here over Bowling Green, I decided to look at what Babers accomplished at BG in terms of P5 opponents:

Year One at Bowling Green

Beat a 4-8 Ind - 45-42 at home
Loss to an 11-3 Wisc - 17-68 on the road

Year Two at Bowling Green

Loss to a 9-4 Tenn - 30-59 in Nashville
Beat a 3-9 MD - 48-27 on the road
Loss to a 9-4 Memphis - 41-44 on the road (not P5 I know, but they had a good year last year so I threw them in)
Beat a 2-10 Purdue 35-28 on the road

Not much of a data set to draw any definitive conclusions, but looks like in Year 1 the wins will likely come more by how well the opponent is doing than us.
By the end of Year 2 we should have a better feel. Pitt is recruiting really well this year under Narduzzi while NC State the past few years has ranked between 45 and high 30s.

So both will still have a "perceived" talent edge on us for the next couple of years. Hopefully the new system helps to neutralize that as we move forward.

Cheers,
Neil

we have better talent on D that BG, we have lesser talent at the skill spots than BG, if the Scheme makes our players play just a bit better then we beat UV and Pitt last year and go bowling. if the young D plays better we are right there with all those teams. at worst the skill kids we just got to verbal are Ish/Estime/fredericks/phillips level, having 3-4 more of those types make the offense better just by replacing kids and thats if the kids coming back dont get any better. now add scheme and hopefully more plays at a faster pace, the numbers show we can make a 10pt jump. keep the QB healthy and we can be 3-8 win team even with the same level of D.

Ummm, immediately?

I'm not sure Louisville, with Petrino, should be included with the other two.

This is a weird question. Two years ago we came 3rd in the Atlantic but now we can't compete? NC State blows. We should beat them more often than not. Pitt is a toss up going forward. Louisville will be interesting. Petrino IMO has disappointed thus far. They came in 3rd by default not because they earned it. NC State is mediocre at best. BC, Cuse, and Wake sucked the last two years. They haven't had a lot to work with on O. But this is year three of Petrino II so you would expect to see something. If not then it won't take much to put Louisville with Pitt as a toss up going forward.

Agreed. He's been fine - but not great. I see shootouts with them in our future.

Yeah, Pitt is probably going to be a home team wins for the next couple years. As for NC State, every PS writer did their way too early predictions for this year today. All 5 of them have us with a losing season, and all 5 of them have us beating NC State. That should tell you all you need to know about them.

Petrino inherited a great defense, which has kept him afloat. He's yet to get that instant QB success that he always seems to develop, but maybe this freshman's arm catches up to his legs. And they do seem to be recruiting well. If I had to place a bet on Petrino getting them as a consistent Top 25, some years better, I'd make that bet. But if I was also given the opportunity to bet on whether or not he'll do something stupid again in his personal life to it all up, I'd make that bet too.

I respectively disagree regarding our skill guys. They are as good if not better than BG skill guys, Most of our current in rotation skill guys had other p5 offers, Ish, Erv, Bris and Lewis are far More Talented . Consider the fact they played with 4 or 5 different qbs in 2 years and against ACC talent. The MAC plays defense like the NBA, The BG system schemed the BG recievers open, the Edelman effect in the Pats system.

the main BG wr is far better than our top guys. the RB played better than ours.. now maybe the scheme did it, but there is reason the first thing the coaches tried to do is get more speed.

Their #1 is better than any WR on our roster, I think.

But I agree that a lot of posters are undervaluing them. The system the last two years wasn't exactly WR friendly. Unlike the Briles/Baber system ... Night/Day.

The MAC really doesn't play much defense, corners aren't physical. Its a 100 yards of basketball at times. Thus the challenges our ACC recievers had to get off the line and get separation in Lesters system compared to dinos system is light years apart. If ED is healthy all year or even TH all of our recievers in the starting rotation have +10 catches at least. Systems scheme guys open. The days of Diva wrs beating guys 1 on 1 are over. Ariens SYSTEM in Arizona has given Larry Fitz new life, Again, where would Edelman be if he was on the dolphins, Browns, or even the Seahawks? Its all about system and complimentary routes intelligently put together. ...yes, with a capable qb.
