What does ford mean when it comes to the names of colleges? Samford, Radford, Wofford, etc.

What does ford mean when it comes to the names of colleges? Samford, Radford, Wofford, etc.

It's a shallow river crossing, which were significant before bridges and at some point people probably started using place names as last names. Like John from Samford just became John Samford. So it's popular in the names of both places settled by English people and people descended from English people. That's my guess anyways.
