ND Postgame

So no one yet knows why Donnie didn’t start? Hopefully we will know the truth soon. Also, the man sitting behind me said that Donnie and JJ were in some kind of enemy mode. Their body language towards each other was terrible. Now, I didn’t - of course - notice any of that, but I am wondering if anyone else did? I am counting on the board to shed light on these issues so I can take it back to my “team” sitting around me. Thanks!

The crowd was perhaps the biggest we have had all season. The students once again were there. I was thinking people would be pretty apathetic and not show up, but it was great that they did and great that we won. It was - darn it! - it was just so great!

There was a middle-aged overweight VT fan sitting in front of us and every time he stood up you could see 1/3 or half of his buttockal area. I cannot tell you how much fun we had with that. I wish we could have that every game. It would ease the pain somewhat.

At halftime we were all standing around talking and someone asked if we were going to get tickets again next year. To a man, woman and child (who have no say so) we all said yes.

Very nice tribute to Lawrence Moten at halftime. JB was there and he choked up talking about Lawrence. He was such a good player. I have forgiven him, at long last, for calling the time out we didn’t have in the Elite Eight game his senior year. What a terrible way for him to end his college career! John Wallace was on the floor with about 20 family members. Still can’t believe he’s gone.

So happy we won! Wonder if we will again?
I mentioned up thread that in his post game presser Autry said his decision to bring Freeman off the bench was a strategic one due to matchups.

Make of that what you will.

22 minutes is strange. We didn’t even bring him in until about 8 minutes in. The excuses didn’t pass the smell test.

Yup it is an excuse I don't know what happened. Jeremy said he was suspended, maybe he was late to practice or meeting or something? I don't know but I think what Red said about match-ups or whatever was him being a players coach and covering for Donnie and what actually happened.

NC STATE was the last game he was 24/10 50% from the field 50% from 3 100% from the FT line?????? That isn't good?

In ACC play Donnie had 1 bad game against VT

I didn't love his play against Miami I thought he wasn't aggressive enough, especially on the boards but he wasn't bad... 7/11 from the field isn't horrible I wouldn't label it as bad just not excellent. Otherwise everything else in ACC play is good.

18/9
27/9
22/5
25/8
19/14
10/9 - vt
14/2 - miami mentioned above
24/10

Shooting over 50% from the field over 35% from three and over 80% from the free throw line

Like he is putting up all ACC numbers I don't know what you guys expect. 30/20 per game?
theres more to the game than scoring

the interior defense has been very poor in acc play ...and that makes it very hard to win

donnie has also had many many costly turnovers of the unforced variety

furthermore, hes a ball stopper

hes looked like an nba caliber talent at times...when hes on...but hes also been cold a lot too now

evaluating players only off of their scoring average is lazy and misses a lot of what is important

I don't know but I think what Red said about match-ups or whatever was him being a players coach and covering for Donnie and what actually happened.

Yeah I don't buy it for a second. He's the last person on the team to have matchup issues.

I think he is playing as well as he can with the team and coach around him. I think he could be a little better on the boards, but that is about it. I think a better coach and better offensive system and a better lead guard can get more out of him.

His stats are consistent I don't know what you are talking about.

I've mentioned several times directly to you now that he started off 7-12 from three in the ACC, and has gone 5-21 since then, as we had a four game losing streak. NOT CONSISTENT,

Nine blocked shots in his first 6 games, one in his last 7 games. NOT CONSISTENT.

He had only 4 rebounds and no blocked shots in our home loss to Miami, and he failed to get to the line even ONCE in 32 minutes. He played soft and we got Big Boyed by a team we should have beaten.

In ACC play, he has been consistent. You don't average what he is averaging without being consistent.

I just gave you the recent numbers, and we just had a 4 game losing streak against the worst teams in the league.

Making plays to win the game?? Our coach is terrible. Our guards are awful.

I also agree about the health comment you made.

People talk about efficiency and advanced metrics like they are straight from God herself. And yet one of the statistically most inefficent players for us was Saint Gerry McNamara.

I can't count how many times (after the Championship Year) he had a 4-17 game or a 5-23 game, and he would hit the game winning shot. SO MANY TIMES.

Some players are clutch and refuse to lose games. Some players drop their heads and stop trying when they are losing. Donnie wasn't even there for our biggest games of the year.

What games has he won for us this year? I would say Florida State and Georgia Tech. Those were his best efforts in games we actually won. That's about it.

Sure, he's putting up numbers, but nobody's calling him an all league player, let alone all american. Nobody's got him on their draft boards.

He's a huge talent, but he plays soft, and he doesn't play inside-out enough. He also isn't strong enough defensively. He's statistically pretty good on the boards, but so was Eddie Lampkin.

if youre gonna have a 2nd unit that cannot score

might as well have donnie be the volume ball hog of that unit

meanwhile that means kingz and co can get their shots off when they are in too

i said it in another thread before this game

so goes the assist totals so goes the offense and so goes the team

this team will not lose many games in which they get 20+ assists

its really that simple

GET ASSISTS!!

He probably has never came off the bench before in his life some people can't play off the bench, especially when they are used to starting their entire life.
All the way since the first game back after his injury. He came off the bench for that game.

Small detail, it was a round of 32 game. The thing is, I think we would have gone to the final four if we won that game.

Well, theoretically, Kiyan Anthony and Tyler Betsey ought to give us more consistent contributions than they do.

I think it's possible that the defense would start better with Sadiq out there.

I thought the movement was much better without Donnie, too, because too many guys stood around watching him with the ball, not cutting to the hoops, or finding an open space for a three.

They made the extra pass on a number of possessions. Makes a huge difference when they share the ball. Granted ND is a terrible defensive team so I think it’s more it was a good matchup for us.

I thought Betsy played better on O and D today. William had a great game too.

Kiyan’s sulking on the bench is a bad look.

Donnie looked angry he wasn’t playing. Strange decision there. Has to be more to it.

Sadiq is getting unnecessarily penalized by refs on anticipation fouls. Hopefully that doesn’t carry over. It was ridiculous today.

Might be a dumb question… who is Jeremy?

This escapade you’re on is something. Starling doesn’t belong in the same sentence as Joe Girard let alone Gerry McNamara. Gerry TS% for his career was .547. JJ’s is .499. Also he has triple the assists as JJ.

That was a heart breaking loss. We were at Disneyworld with the kids eating at Cape May. The kids had written on every paper tablecloth in the restaurant “GO SU” in orange crayon. They put the game on the tv for us to watch and the other patrons got into it cheering for SU too because our kids were so funny. Horrible way to lose, poor SU, Poor Lawrence. I agree, was sure we were going to win.

Gerry was a point guard most of the time at SU though so the assist disparity makes sense, neither Joe nor JJ are point guards. Gerry was unique thriving on pressure winning shots for sure. Joe was never really a point guard but was a great 3 point shooter - JJ is quicker and a better drive to the basket player for 2’s vs 3’s than either Joe or Gerry though. Just different players.

My point was that these guys think efficiency stats are the be-all, end-all.
I don't think Gerry ever made more than 35% from three; not elite.
But he hit more game winners than anybody I can remember.

If you factor in defense (and we are supposed to be a defensive team) than Kingz is a real good player and has lived up to what we expected - no one goes past him

Kingz is terrific at many aspects of the game. I would like to see him get on a heater now from three. He's got good form.
