legal marked lane space is the key phrase with this rule. If you are not in one, you cannot cross the free throw line extended (if within the three point line to begin with) OR the three point line (if starting beyond this arc) until the ball hits the rim...just like the actual shooter.

the wisdom behind this rule?

there would be complete chaos..you could 3 guys running under the rim from the corners while a free throw is in the air..how are you supposed to box these people out?

its much like the NFL rule where if you are a receiver that goes out of bounds..you cannot be the first to touch the ball after coming back in bounds...why? well think about it..a receiver could purposely go out of bounds...hide amongst the bench...only to reappear 30 yards down field uncovered...
