In terms of population that’s true... why are there two Dakota states? Curious the background of their discovery

Is this a "things that make you go hmmmm" thread. Like why is there a University of Indiana in Pennsylvania and why is University of South Florida not in Dade or Broward County.

There was the Dakota Territory. They carved 2 states out of it, presumably for political reasons. The 2 states were added to the Union on the same day. No one knows which was #39 and which was #40.

  1. When President Benjamin Harrison signed the statehood proclamations for North and South Dakota he shuffled the papers on his desk and covered up all but the signature line of the documents. No one knows which state he signed into existence first. North Dakota's proclamation was published first in the Statutes at Large, as it is first in alphabetical order.
