Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 16 of our 43 misses = 37.2%
They rebounded 15 of their 36 misses = 41.7%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 17 points on 16 O-Rebs = 1.0625 points/O-reb
They got 20 points on 15 O-Rebs = 1.333 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 12 turnovers – 8 steals = 4 unforced
They had 11 turnovers – 5 steals = 6 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 2 points from 12 takeaways = 0.167 points/takeaway
They had 13 points from 11 takeaways = 1.182 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 19 points in 28 unsettled situations = 0.679 points
They had 33 points in 26 unsettled situations = 1.269 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 37 + 11 = 48
They had 42 + 12 = 54

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 12 for 40 on twos, (30.0%), 8 for 23 on threes (34.8%) and 11 for 14 on frees (78.6%)
They were 19 for 38 on twos, (50.0%), 6 for 19 on threes (31.6%) and 22 for 28 on frees (78.6%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 22 PIP, 26 POP, 24 TREY, 2 TZ, 2 POTO, 0 FBP
They had 36 PIP, 20 POP, 18 TREY, 2 TZ, 13 POTO, 14 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 0 FBP in 31 opportunities (00.0%)
They scored 14 FBP in 39 opportunities (35.9%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 31 FCP and 17 SCP
They had 22 FCP and 20 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

We scored 3 points
They scored 0 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 59 points and our bench scored 0 points
Their starters scored 67 points and their bench scored 11 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 6 of our 20 field goals = 30.0%
They assisted 20 of their 25 field goals = 80.0%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 59 points in 69 possessions = 0.855 points/ possession
They scored 78 points in 66 possessions = 1.182 points/possession
It was a 135 possession game. (We are averaging 131 a game in regulation.)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

19-20, 10-19, 10-18, 20-21

Fouls
(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 40 two point shots, attempted 14 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.50 0.875
They attempted 38 two point shots, attempted 28 free throws and were fouled 18 times = 2.11; 1.56

They were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more free throws out of it when fouled. The difference was significant. To get 1.56 free throw attempts per foul is the second highest ratio for either team in any game we’ve played this season. We got 33 FTA out of 21 fouls against Cornell (1.57). For the season the overall average has been 1.13 so UNC’s average is 38% above the norm.

Comments:

- Our starting backcourt had -1 NP.

- It was the first game since Pitt II, (13 games ago), where nobody played 40 minutes for Syracuse. Unfortunately the cause was the game was no longer competitive going into the last minute and Roy Williams put his walk-ons in so Jim Boeheim felt he should follow suit.

- Stats joined at the hip: 0-14 fast break points, 2-13 points off turnovers, points in the paint: 22-36, finals core: 59-78.

- It may not have seemed like it as we watched the game but we were actually very successful in our initial set: we won “first chance points” 31-22. But we were -14 in fast break points and -11 at the foul line.

- Any time our starters get out-scored (59-67 here), we are not only going to lose but lose badly.
