Class of 2022 New Commit: Joey Spallina (NY: Mt Sinai) Attack

This is a exciting development. Joey will team up with future Orange Trey Deere & Donny Scott on Orangeville along with Jameson Bucktooth & Koleton Marquis (Hopkins frosh & Deere’s lifelong friend). I watched a ton of OJLL Junior A last summer with their upgraded game streams & am even more pumped to see Hiltz with Peterborough & Finn Thomson with Mimico. I’d really love to see Birtwistle & even Leo join a team as well & wonder if Joey’s brothers make their way up North. Joey’s played box before with a select team but the OJLL has become the premier summer league for HS/college players.

I’m not sure if I previously mentioned this but I loved seeing Spallina & Birtwistle add the Canadian flag decal to the back of their helmet after the first few games. It seemed like a show of respect & comradery with their Canadian teammates Hiltz, Thomson, & Simmons. Gait & March are really pushing our offensive philosophy as positionless “Box Lax on a field”, right down to the horn over the Dome speakers after goals, & having a strong Orange presence in the OJLL will only help attract more & more Canadian/Native talent. The next step is having the Dome lights go off after goals like football does after TDs to give us even more of an NLL feel. Rutgers does it after goals in their outdoor stadium & it looks awesome.

Don’t think Coach likes what they were saying about his kid … hahaha
I was bored, so I checked
Had fewer turnovers than all 5 Tewaataton finalist

I think I'm going Taylor because of the added importance of the goal.

1. Taylor
2. Ruppel (caught this live and it was crazy)
3. Spallina (he's done this a bunch of times)
4. Moore (all star game)

I love what Joey brings to Cuse and he will forever be up there with Orange greats (turned this program back around when he came in), but I’m not sure why Carc is even entertaining him being at the level of MP or Gait ever… MP has led Cuse to multiple championships (I get he only won one), first Cuse player ever to be a freshman AA, 4x AA, the first player to win two Tewaaraton awards - all while still being the points record holder to this day. Gait has too many accolades to even list.

Joey should be aiming for a Championship MVP season and winning the Tewaaraton so he can be in the top five offensive players of all time with CP/P. Gait/Leveille, etc. (this list is just a reflection of my opinion)

Mikey has two titles (02 and 04).

If SU doesn't win this year...Joey cannot be in the conversation of all-time greats on offense. A title is a prerequisite.

I knew I was missing one for MP! Thank you

Yeah so three title games then - nothing to compare to MPs career

Ya Mike not only won 2 but he nearly had a third when SU lost in OT in a game they really should have won vs Princeton.

Joey is a very good player whose really had an outstanding career and definitely up their in all time Cuse greats but he's not in the Mike Powell/Gary Gait echelon. Those two remain on a level alone. You could make the argument for Casey Powell or Paul Gait as well and maybe a guy like Doherty.

I brought up Mike Leveille as I think that could be the closest comparison he should be aiming for if he produces the same outputs Mike did in ‘08

Leveille had a very under the radar career, really doesn't get the credit for how good he was at times and that Sr year he was excellent. He had some injury issues though if my memory serves right and was caught in the post Powell transition teams that were a bit of a mess at times. I am sure Joey would love to repeat what he did as a Sr though.

Championship, Tourney MVP, and Tewaaraton should 100000% be his goal. It’s his year for sure outside of Spanos imo (Lyght/Duke SSDM hopefully won’t be in the FF to add to the mix)

I think Joey is a very good player but he has not been close to dominant against the best teams and has at times been completely taken out of games by elite defenders. Unfortunately, the construction of the team has never promoted his best skill. He is a spectacular passer with great vision and imagination and if he had had the opportunity to play with a high level dodger who could reliably stress defenses, creating more chaos and forcing more slides, we might be calling him the greatest passer of the past 10, 20, or even 50 years?...Maybe we should still be calling him that?

I think beards said it n believe we did it last year in ND game. Which is to make joeys defender the slide guy. Put him in middle n make his defender be help n decide if slide off joey or not. Don’t have to be all game but think should least go for it at times. It seemed to work well vs lyght at ND. Joey can finish inside so not like would hurt us in that way. But would def seem to take schallar out of normal routine.
