New DC: Rocky Long (now official)

Just looking at his resume and the difficulty of winning each game in the FBS, this man is one tough SOB and will not tolerate losing.
What will be interesting is when Rocky sees some of our time management (let's go with) "inefficiencies." Is Long the type that Dino will listen to? His modern-day Homer Smith? I am going to guess he is and Dino will listen, but I am not sure. And while I know more about Rocky Long than most, I am not aware of his time management skills as HC as SDSU or UNM.

Im really excited about the signing of Rocky Long. Its his scheme. He knows how to coach it, adjust it and teach it to other coaches. His overall experience will provide Dino with another knowledgable coach.
Props to Dino for assembling a staff of this caliber.

As much as his scheme, one of the things Rocky is most noted for is his ability to analyze the opposing offense and game plan for their scheme.

From everything I’ve read I also think he’s the type of coach the players will really like. When we hired Anae last year we heard he could sometimes be really rough, that doesn’t personally bother me but in this portal age, it’s too easy for players to just leave when the coach is tough on them. Overall I think we have a really solid staff that players want to play with and for.

He has the reputation of being a great interview. You can see that in this presser from a couple of years ago, when he was the HC at San Diego State.

I wonder if Coach Babers will allow him to talk to the media more than he did with Coach White?

Long's facial expressions and personality remind me - just a little - of Hop
Exactly. In a very congenial, calm, clear, nicely spoken way.

Rocky seems a very intelligent man who knows football.

As djorange says, he is the man. the coach. Very capable of leading this program should Dino stumble.

He will represent the university well.

I am very curious what DC Long can do to fix our run game defense for the Pinstripe bowl.
That may be asking too much in the time we have, IMO.

MadNY3: This is the only CB I could find with decent stats on the Lobo roster, he's a sophomore.

But you know what, I don't think Rocky's in the business of bringing players with him. They need all the good players they have. I may be wrong, but that is what I think considering Long as a coach and person.

The player with the best D stats is a safety and is a senior.

How unique of a situation is this to have the master come right in after his protege and conduct the orchestra on such short notice? I’m sure he’s been in contact with coach white for much of his tenure here and was given good word that we are a great part of the country ( snow be damned) and that this administration gets “it”.

That's him. The All-Conference posting lists him as a FR.

Intriguing for how bad New Mexico was, they had a top 50 defense.

Great hire but I'm slightly worried about the losses and if he can bring in enough good DBs immediately since we are pretty much building a brand new secondary from scratch at this point. Would be great to re recruit a couple guys back.

what are you talking about? Barron and Clark were 3 and 4 in tackles. Johnson 6. Simmons 12. Hannah 17, Wilson 18. All appeared played in 11 or 12 games.

I know some folks get upset when threads meander, but I love it. My sense of humor often makes seemingly random jumps to remotely connected items, so threads like this being me joy. Rocky Long >>>>>>>> Rusty the flatulent horse. It’s gold!!!

I’ll add a Rusty
I worked at Rusty Staub’s restaurant on 5th Ave in the 90’s. He was a big dude

It is great having Long on board, even if it is for 1-2 years. Then again some coaches never retire :p. He will be able to evaluate if anyone on staff has the chops to run the system if/when Long ever leaves. And if not I would not be surprised to see Gonzales here as a DB coach in 2024 with the plan on taking over in 2025.

Not knowing anything about personal relationships, I would guess Gonzales is likely to become the DC at Mississippi State sometime between now and the start of the 2024 season. Whenever his time at New Mexico ends (likely at the end of the 2023 season).

I would hope by the time Rocky is ready to retire, Syracuse will have at least one defensive assistant really well versed in the 3-3-5 who is ready to take over for Rocky.

Calling Coach Monroe, calling Coach Monroe....

Very happy and very smart hire at this time for the program. I don't know if anything about this guy but if he is pretty much the creator of this and taught Tony White then I am Very content with this hire

Maybe Rocky will be up in the box and give Swag the birds eye view. By the way, this sounds like a hint to a succession plan:
