New York approves limited sports betting rules

Of course the state screws this up

For everyone downstate this changes nothing as the closest sports betting casino to them is way the fluck up in the Catskills. New Jersey will continue to eat New York's lunch.

Not sure why the legislature didn't include mobile/online. Thats probably 75% of the total revenue. Give it another year and you will have some option.

As will the bookies. Why go anywhere if you don’t have to?

The official reason is that it would require amending the constitution. The real reason is probably that they want to bring traffic to the underperforming state-run casinos.

i would like to understand why they think not allowing in state college betting makes it safer. who do they think its rigging a bet, if you try to do that and bet legally it causes all sorts of bells to go off.

forcing the majority of local bets to stay illegal is pretty short sited.

That's just how NYS rolls. Stupid, short-sighted thinking, always trying to figure out how to benefit the politically connected at the expense of doing what is simple and straightforward.

Another example: medical marijuana market - we are down to only 1 dispensary in the Syracuse area, and so the price is now $200 for a THC cartridge. It used to be "only" $99 when there were 3 places in the area. I can get them for $30-45 each. Used to be I had to go to NYC or Northern NJ, but now I have a guy here in Syracuse.

When I renewed my license recently, the lady at the doctor's office said, "I see you haven't made any purchases from a dispensary." I didn't bother answering. The answer is clear. If you price the legal market above what's reasonable, then the illegal market will continue and flourish.

Of course they won't pass the legal recreational cannabis market until they figure out how to try to turn it into a monopoly investment for the politically connected. Meanwhile, they will miss their window of opportunity to get all that tax money. It shouldn't be any different to sell marijuana than it is to sell alcohol. It should be regulated through the State Liquor Authority, and it should be exactly the same process to get a license to sell pot as it is to sell beer, wine and liquor.

Sell booze in grocery stores too.

Oneidas set date to launch sports betting at CNY casinos

So I was pretty pumped to stop in at Turning Stone before Football (and Basketball) season and place my first legal sports bets, including SU Football/Basketball winning the NC.

I just re-read this articled and found out we can't bet on College sports yet. Grumble, Grumble, Grumble.

Can someone explain to me the logic? Bets are still going to be placed on college sports - why not legalize it all?

You need to re-re-read the article. You cannot bet on NYS College teams or any collegiate event held in the state. You will be able to bet on college sports. NYS fears there can be tampering if it's within it's own state or you might know things about Syracuse or Buffalo or St. John's because you might have access the general public doesn't.

The big gripe is no online betting. That's what's annoying

so in syracuse you can bet on a game at PENN STATE that is closer than a game in NYC..

and people in NYC can bet on games in rutgers

using state borders to limit bets is just not thinking at all..

i mean how hard is it, if you think proximity is a big deal, just add some GPS stats to the bet taking so no bets on a game within 100 miles or some number of where you are making a bet..

a guy in NYC can bet games in philly, NJ. Boston all closer than a game in Buffalo..

and why do they think a football bet is easier to know or fix than a horse race?

You can give a gym bag of cash to a football player and he'll know what to do with it. The horse won't.

you dont fix a race with a horse, you do it with a jockey and that happens all the time.

if 90% of the betting is being done on a game illegally or outside of the state then not allowing it in state is really not going to stop it if a fix is in..

there isnt that much money being bet on these games to make it that valuable to put a fix in, in the legal market. but if you want to fix a game in ny state and then go bet it in 5 other states this doesnt stop anything.

Nothing is more crooked than harness racing.

Because college kids who have very little money are presumed to be more susceptible to being bribed to throw games than pros who are earning seven or eight figures per year.

yeah but you can bet on college games just not the 1-2 NY state ones.

think about how it works.. say there is 50K in bets made on an SU game in NY state if its legal.

if you bribe a player how much are we talking to get him to do it? 1k? 5k? 10K?

now after you get a kid to do that, you have to make money. you going to bet 10k? after making a 1-5K investment? thats not worth the effort. so say you want to bet 20K? well legally you wont be able to, you will have to make the house limit which will be more like 1K so you have to make 20 bets. Now if that happens in a legal betting world , the pts will move since you are now causing a huge shift in the houses coverage of that game.

now in this new world you could trying laying off the bets in multiple states but just how big an operation is trying to do this?

bells and whistles go off in the legal world since they all talk to each other now.

instead we keep it going thru the bookies if its a local thing and we are right back to the whole BC scandle. an and that got caught because of vegas figuring it out.

if its not a local thing then not allowing the local team bets doesnt matter since the local dude is fixing a game in iowa and this doesnt stop that.

by not allowing the local betting are then assuming no one is betting on the local teams now?

In the old days of sports betting scandals, people put down mid-six figure bets on games (in the 1950s and 1960s). Big money would be placed on a game. One guy by himself doesn't fix games; an organization does, and the bets would be broken up into a lot of different bets, so it would be harder to trace.

yup back in the day when betting wasnt all tied together on the legal side.. now the casinos all talk and the bets are connected much better and tracked.

there is no one making 6 figure bets legally that is fixing a game these days.. most houses have limits way lower, you need to be a player to get that type of action. so that forces you to make the bets in multiple places. as i said you would need to spread it around to multiple states to get it done, if thats happening then why bother removing 1-2 teams from the betting pool when there are 100 other games you can get it done with.. is there some secret syndicate living in SU waiting to do this that wasnt doing it when bookies controlled the action?

if they want to make a fix happen to a ny team they can still do it and bet it outside NY so again it doesnt stop anything.. it just lowers the states take on NY money to remove the local teams

the NYC folks will continue to use their guy or go to NJ and bet whatever they want. The closest NY casino with sports betting is Resorts World Catskills, 90 miles away from NYC. New York will get none of the tri-state area sports bets.

I was excited about it till I seen the sports betting documentary on Showtime. Syracuse football plays a BIG role in the second episode i think. Probably a 5 min feature. It will be fun to bet once in a while. But I'm not p1ssing away my money into it. I wanna bet on my phone. I dont wanna drive 40 mins down the thruway to sit in a over crowded sports betting lounge on a Sunday. I might do that once or twice a year at the most.
