News Coverage of the Accident is sickening

Guy that sits next me at the women's bball game said his daughter in germany called him because she heard JB killed a guy. Terrible sensationalism going on all over the place

That's what I heard as well. Just curious if anybody here actually witnessed it being said
I watched the video and one of a$$clowns chimed in after hearing JB went down to the police station following the accident that "he must of fled the scene then if he went directly to the police station". The co-host did a decent job of reiterating he was fully cooperative with police after hearing this. I don't recall anyone claiming he was drinking.

It’s their super bowl. I get it. They spend 99% of their days sending live crews to non events to make them seem important.

It’s all overkill. So when they get an actual news story in this town, the producers freak out and go breaking news team coverage.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) there’s not much to this story- it’s pretty simple.

Car Spins out in bad weather.
Passengers get out of car.
Passing car doesn’t see them, and hits one of them and they die.

There’s no conspiracy, no crime. It’s just a freaking accident.

Agree. The headline on Syracuse.com is provocative, misleading and pure sensationalism. ‘Jim Boeheim hit and kills man’ sounds like he physically attacked someone and killed him. No mention that it was a car accident in the headline to just sensationalize a tragic traffic accident. Click bait only - no respect for truth and accuracy nor the poor people involved in the tragedy just to get people to read it. Adding to the tragedy that has befallen both families is an unforgivable look for the local media.

One of Le Batard’s sidekicks mistakenly said that JB left the scene and went to the police station and was like, gee, that makes things look bad. They then corrected it on air that JB stayed at the scene and later went to the police station. They never said he was drinking

The headlines say this to generate clicks.

This should be a reminder of how vulnerable public personalities are (yes they are privilaged in many ways.) This is hard enough for a normal person to deal with but takes on more levels for someone like JB. And he did nothing wrong whats he going to do plow into a car intentionally that 9 times out of 10 has people in it?

Local news in this town is cringeworthy.

I can confirm this is true. I know at our station there are stories that are bring in automatic engagement:

Anything Cuomo realted
Anything Trump related
Marijuana legalization
Anything about animals

Even our Syracuse coverage lacks. The best two stories I've seen were about the Camping World Bowl and SU beating Duke the first time. Even then, we didn't receive much engagement.

When people are talking about it, they're going to ride that wave until it stops. Whether it's viewers on television, page clicks, likes/retweets, shares, etc. That's just how it is. A lot of important stuff does go unnoticed, but we'll keep sharing what gets engagement.

EDIT: For the record, our station is one of the FEW that labeled Boeheim as the driver in a fatal accident, not as "Boeheim Hits, Kills Person/pedestrian/etc."

You can't believe anything the media reports anymore. They sensationalize everything and pass off opinion as fact before they even have the facts.
Yup I stay away from most news outlets nowadays cause a lots of the times I disagree or don't like how they get the news and what they do with the news when they get it. sickening all about ratings and will do whatever it takes to get them

Whew, somewhat conflicted by all this.

I didn't see the local coverage. So maybe it is just as bad as everyone says.

And there is no question that media standards have fallen off a cliff in the last several years. TV leading that plunge.

Yes, this could have been any one of us driving that car. And frankly could have been any one of us who crashed the first car and became the victim.

At the same time, JB is a national figure and this is a national story. Of course it gets more attention because it's JB. It would be crazy to think it wouldn't get more attention because it's JB or a JB-like figure.

That's really just common sense. Forget about clickbait, that would have been the case when newspapers were being set in hot type.

Ehhh. Heard something about it mentioning he was drinking or that someone implied that he was drinking and then comments that he fled the scene.

Don’t take my words for fact but it was something along those line.
Syracuse DA said that there were stupid remarks in the media that said JB had been drinking and it was a "fact" that he had fled from the scene. He said if they had taken 30 seconds it would have been confirmed that JB does not drink and had in fact tried to render aid and had used his own cell phone to flag approaching car including the first responder.

Sounds about right what I read.

What did they incorrectly report?

The coverage would have been the same in any other city of the same size which involved a local celebrity like JB. It made the national news and is even on the local news in NC. It's just the way news is covered today...more sensationalism and less journalism.

I am no fan of the local media but don't really get all the angst. I think they have been - with a few exceptions - fair and balanced when you consider the tragedy was accidental and involved the biggest celebrity in town. People want to know the details and they are providing them.

What did they incorrectly report?
1st of all that coach had been drinking. DA said any call to any body who knows the coach would have found out that he doesn't drink PLUS a breathalyzer showed 0.00%. 2nd one "reporter" said it was a a FACT that coach left the scene when in FACT coach was waving traffic around the scene with his cellphone flashlight when the first officer arrived on scene. These clowns took that coach was coming from a restaurant as a sign he had been drinking and that he went to public safety building as a sign he left the scene. Reporting by "inference" rather than checked out info.

Why these people can’t be sued is a national disgrace.

At a minimum they should be fired immediately. “Clean out your desk and hand over your security pass immediately. The security guard will escort you out carrying out that pathetic cardboard box of stuff from your desk” and we will be filming your perp walk to show on TV later as an example to others.”

It’s all covered under free speech as long as they don’t intend to injure ones reputation.

Let's make clear the distinction between the local media and whatever it is that Le Batard does.

Because I know when I want good, reliable information on a topic I always turn to the Dan Le Batard show.

I thought the local news coverage was a bit over-the-top in presentation but solid in what was actually reported. The problem i had was with the half-hour "special" they did on it at 7PM. There was nothing to report they hadn't just covered from 5PM-6:30 over and over. They fact that something is a big story doesn't mean that there is a continual flow of new information to talk about.

I don't listen to Le Batard and am glad I don't. I've always said that national coverage of local events is going to have less depth and accuracy than local coverage of local events. No local show would ever have said those things.

It’s all covered under free speech as long as they don’t intend to injure ones reputation.

I think alleging that JB was drunk and left the scene comes under that provision.

The media is dead in this country. Probably been dead longer than we want to believe. It's all click bait and opinion nonsense all the way around.
Agreed. As soon as CNN started and it's sister channel 'headline news', gained traction, it was check and mate. There is only so much news that's fit to print, so to speak. The rest of the time is opinion tripe, used as filler- and most of that is now sensationalized to get viewers or "clicks".

They aren’t media.
