Next year - QB?

Every year we should try to get the best players available to us that we can afford while simultaneously developing the under belly. I don’t understand the notion that we shouldn’t look for upgrades because our schedule is hard next year. Seems silly.
Completely Agree, but please refrain from using the term “underbelly” in the future. ;)

They may be, or they might not prove to be. Time will tell.

And optimism is fine. They both have intriguing profiles, so it's fine to be excited about what they bring to the table. But I wouldn't feel especially comfortable heading into next season with Jakhari, Michael Johnson, and Carney as the entirety of the quarterback room. Talk about inexperienced.

And given how singularly instrumental Kyle McCord has been to our success this year -- that seems like an unnecessary risk for the coaching staff to take. Again, I like the potential of both of those guys. Hope that you are right, and one of them is a stud. But the reality is that we have no idea what either of those guys can do at this level.
Yup. Potential doesnt mean you are ready. I rather go into ND Clemson Miami Tennessee SMU with a QB that has some experience.

Angeli is a former four-star QB from Westfield NJ.
He has been Riley Leonard's backup all season, so he's only thrown the ball 28 times. Last year he was the backup for Sam Hartman. It's ND so there are at least a couple QBs already on the roster (like CJ Carr) who are probably at least as good as Angeli.
It makes sense that Angeli may want to look for better opportunities unless he likes being a backup.
He's from NJ (Bergen Catholic), Fran might have some pull.

He's no Kyle McCord but maybe he would be a good fit at SU.
Nunzio used to be the head coach at Bergen Catholic. His brother Vito is the current head coach and Angeli played for him there. Add in the success with McCord. If Angeli portals, I would think we'd have a good shot if interested.

I think he would be a good fit as long as he doesn't cost and arm and a leg. If he comes here and wins QB1, great. But if he doesn't and you paid $1M to get him here?

Most of his game reps have been garbage duty but he has looked really good. He did look great in the Bowl game and those were real reps.

Based on what is out there, I think he could be the best portal option.
We’re not paying a transfer qb that kind of coin. We have far bigger needs. Could I see a backup like him want to come in and compete? Sure. But that’s a far cry from a McCord situation. Big difference between a guy wanting a guy and a sure fire starter.

We should consider Preston Stone, he came from the same league where Carney just set the all-time wins record over Shedeur Sanders, lots of talent in TAPPS and they run pass heavy offenses

Like a Drew Allen from Oklahoma? Jakhari has had a full year learning from the best QB in the nation. I would see what he has before a backup at a Power Football school.

In the portal era, this is a question that I can't even ponder. So much can change with players coming and going. I'm certainly not criticizing the OP, it's just a topic I can't wrap my head around at the moment.

If it is going to be a backup that we chase as a portal transfer, then the coaches better be really sure that the guy has the goods.

Would much rather prefer an established starter, with known capabilities, who might be enticed by the video game numbers that McCord put up this year. Fran and staff would have something legit that they could sell on the recruiting trail -- come here, and be the next guy to do what Kyle just did.

If they go the portal transfer QB route, that is.

Pretty sure there is a guy on the support staff whose primary responsibility is to scout programs for players who might portal. These speculation lists already exist elsewhere. Fran and staff will be prepared for possibilities - it won't be reactionary. Of course, there will be surprise entries. In any case, evaluating potential portal QBs is already happening. McCord's record setting season here will resonate with transfers. Fran will look to leverage that success if thinks the "right" guy is there. It is who he is.

Its the GMs job isnt it?

Drew Allen? lol You can see what Johnson Williams and Carney can do while bringing in a transfer.

You do both. Thats what a good coach would do.

Precisely. Depth and competition is good. Talented QBs and athletes don’t shy away from that. Gotta act like a big boy program if we want to win like one.

There’s just a big difference between adding more talent and adding the former starter at Ohio state. That was a perfect storm for us. The portal is creating lots of opportunities for QBs to play when they wouldn’t have before. Nothing wrong with that. But if we have to rely on a portal qb most years as a guaranteed starter, we’re failing and not spending our money wisely.
