No JGRANT on MCD ROSTER, Thats not right !!!

How about the womens team getting more mcds players than the men's this year.

I definitely think there are situations where schools play a role in what kids make it.

That being said, I don't think many of us (I know I don't) know enough about the high school hoops landscape to say Grant "deserves" to be on it or not.

The story I heard talks about a grudge between Billy and Coach Wooten going back to his time at DeMatha. In 2001, Cameron Indoor was hosting the McD game, but Duke had no high profile recruits in the game. They ended up selecting Duke's lone decent recruit, PG Daniel Ewing, to play. Ewing couldn't hold a candle to Edelin, who was the PG for the mythical national champion, Oak Hill, that season.

I'm not saying that there is an SU conspiracy with the game. There isn't. What I am saying is that the selection process is flawed and has resulted in many average guys with more hype making the game over the years all because of where they signed and the ratings the game could draw because of it. And some kids appear to have been black balled, which was the case with Paul Harris. I still don't think anyone has ever figured out that one. Some said it was his grades. Others said that he didn't qualify because he didn't actually graduate from HS in four years. Whatever it was, the kid got hosed.
The beef against Paul appears to have been his drug involvement in HS.

Several points have been made, but no need to come down on the poster.

1) Grant should have made it.
This can be taken two ways: one) his ranking was high enough but they don't like Cuse (weak argument), or two)
he should have been ranked higher (debatable).

2) The selection process is subjective and biased (debatable). Hak was not rated until we offered whereupon he became top 100. I assume that a Cuse offer carries some prestige but not as much as some other programs. All evidence is circumstantial.

3) Number of Mickey Dees matters. Not debatable. Recruiting is all about prestige just as business is all about sales. Schools can't pay for labor so they offer prestige whether in the form of reputation, facilities, history etc. Mickey Dees beget additional Mickey Dees. That is the way the world works and that is why it is good to get recruits classified as Mickey Dees whether or not deserving.

Bees is dead on correct with the Edelin situation. Billy burned all his bridges at DeMatha before leaving, it was more than just a 'grudge'.

I think it was mainly about the time he walked into a room and accidentally impregnated 23 women with his mere presence.

I liked this post specifically to bring you to 666 likes. Strong work Mr. Kelly.

never knew that about Edelin, thanks for the detail.

On Harris: Wooten was quite explicit that it was character issues, relating to Harris' early involvement with the legal system.

I think you're correct on Harris. If that was the case, then he didn't earn the right to be there.

Wooten had little respect for Billy because of things that didn't happen in the classroom and things that did happen off the court. The reasons why he didn't make it at DeMatha are the same ones why Wooten didn't endorse him for the Mickey Dee game. He really didn't get hosed. Harris didn't deserve to make it either.

Fair enough. My problem was with the amount of power Wooten had over the whole thing. By the time Edelin was a senior, though, he got his grades in order and had a damn good season. Seems Wooten didn't believe in second chances. I have no arguement on the Harris snub. I forgot about his legal issues in HS.

"So I was watching this movie Air Bud, and that dog could really play! I think you see where I'm going with this."

Nothing against you, but I think I can see where this thread is going. Already I feel stupid for reading the first page of it. Thank god I have the common sense to skip the next three pages. Wow.

From the stories I heard, Wooten gave Billy many second chances while he was at DeMatha.

Wasn't some of Billy's problem was that there were already two other kids from Oak Hill, (better players too) already on the McD team so they didn't think that there should be 3 from the same school?
