How do I put my settings so that I get one of those red +1 alerts whenever a poster that I follow makes a post?

Thought they showed up by default when you follow someone but they never pop up for me.

Put your cursor over "alerts" and then "alert preferences"

Yeah, I think I've been to that page before and all of the boxes are checked, but none of them relate to receiving an alert when one of my followed posters makes a post, anyway.
