Notre Dame Gameday...

There is no team I enjoy beating more than Notre Dame - that being said I respect the hell out of Corrigan. Benching Jake Taylor in the fourth with the game on the line AND giving him the silent treatment is a hall of fame, elite I'm pissed at you, you're in the dog house type of move. No way my wife and him aren't related.

Owen Hiltz will go down as one of the more underrated and underappreciated players in Cuse history. He may not be on the Mt. Rushmore of Syracuse lax, but quietly he's been nothing short of both consistent and phenomenal - he deserves a F4 appearance more than anyone on the team. Thankful he didn't go to Denver.

Lastly, hats of to McCool. He's the only player I've been critical of this year and has been outstanding of late. The Duke and UNC games would've been blow outs if he didn't stand on his head.

Go Orangemen.

simultaneous penalties make it unreleasable. every single time.

and i just saw the replay (this is for others).. with su already having a flag down, the push becomes time serving (and unreleasable), regardless of whether the other team has possession. if they had possession, the play would've been killed. this new-ish rule accounts for that.

just trying to clear it up for everybody.
I didn’t know that simultaneous leads to unreleasable….weird rule, but if that’s the rule, good job knowing that.

Ya you have to keep in mind SU was up four with like a minute left and honestly should have been up 5 if we didn't place a semi-empty netter right at Riccardelli's feet. SU does need to clean up the turnovers, a horrific one late by Rhoa cracked open the door for the last minute of penalty hell.
Leave it up to you to find a dark cloud in a sunny day. Ha!

HUGE win! With Army’s loss today, I don’t think we even make it to the playoffs with a loss today. Phew. At least we’re in the tournament (we should be).

Best game of the season:
-We Finally ran the offense through Hiltz! He’s our best offensive player (we will Really miss him next year), so keep running the offense through him, and not Spallina. Run some picks for Hiltz, too, to get him matched up on a SSDM, and then let him do his thing. I’ve been asking for this all season. He’s SO good
-McCool is a national championship level goalie… stud
-Mullen was obviously outstanding today
-Spallina is SO good on Man Up with his passing, but just use him there. Otherwise, keep him off ball
-Our Man Up team, or should I say our Box Lacrosse team looks fantastic. Good job Coach Gait with the Man Up team. We only have 1 middie (Leo) on our man-up team because it’s just our box lacrosse attackmen. They are literally playing box lacrosse out there with their passing and finishing (minus the ridiculous bonecrushing picks from behind that are legal in box)

BUT
-Our weakest link is still our SSDMs: Jake Spallina got beaten for a few goals (someone needs to teach him how to hedge and at least slow down the dodger when his man is picking our longstick), Bolognino got beat, Ochoa got beat badly, and even Rice (who is great) got beat, BUT our inability to slide and support our SSDMs is frustrating to watch. They’re getting dodged on from X, and the dodger gets all the way to the goal without anyone sliding to help? That’s poor coaching. Please slide early if a SSDM is getting beaten
-Hottle and Anderson are both significantly better players then Rhoa, and both of them need more touches. Rhoa’s catch and shoot is good, but that’s about it
-We’re lucky that they didn’t put a SSDM on Thomson. Other teams will. We need to be ready for that, and possibly swap him with Anderson if other teams do it

Still, congrats to Coach Gait! Not making the playoffs this year would have been demoralizing for this program
Disagree strongly with pretty much all your takes on the offense, but we can agree on ssdms being the weak link. Think we have to take an athlete like McCarthy, who has struggled all year on the offensive end, and make him a full time ssdm. We trust him enough to play defense off the wing if we lose the face off. Meanwhile he has played 2nd line mid all year and not even hit 10 points. Rice is the man and overall I am pretty impressed with Ochoa, especially his speed in the open field, but it gets rough after that. Levine is a huge loss that will continue to hurt us.

I also didn't know, and I'm not sure I've ever seen it officiated like that before although I'm sure I've seen similar situations play out on the field.

Can't help but also feel that the word simultaneous is being loosely used by the rulebook in that case since there was noticeable time between each penalty.

It’s wildly obvious that McCarthy needs to be used in SSDM capacity. Don’t get what the staff is seeing there. Wish the staff had been developing some of the freshmen middies to get some time. McIntee, Koby White, Kraftson, etc.

There’s gotta be someone on this roster than can help out the 2nd line…

Thanks for spelling it out, I just wasn't getting it last night. Interesting rule. Feel like we haven't seen it called before in similar situations. Obviously it's something that isn't called/enforced often as it had everyone confused, and I'm assuming why we saw Gait out on the field looking perplexed.

Either way, it's a non issue if the guys stop with the bonehead plays.

Anderson there full time plus Hottle and cordez is a start. I think they like McCarthys ability to get separation, but he is totally shook as a shooter from any sort of range. If you can’t shoot then does it really matter that you can get separation? I believe McIntee and Kolby White have been dealing with injuries. I thought Kraftson looked great in the fall. Some might not agree, but i think Deere should be playing more than just on man up.

My ideal 2nd line would be Hottle, Anderson, & Deere. Deere is obviously not a dodging threat at all but imagine the opposing close defense having to adjust & account for a strictly crease finisher every other possession. I also agree with moving McCarthy to SSDM full time for the remainder of the season to make up for the loss of LeVine.

I think those guys all redshirted?

simultaneous means when they were booked in a play on situation. if it's the same team, something like a no possession push is time serving and locked in, now along with the 1st call.

if it's the offended team, it kills the play. if the offended team commits what is normally a time serving, both locked in.

and then all dead ball fouls are locked in, as we saw also.

Hiltz with a legendary performance. If he plays like that we are dangerous. Hes gotta be one of the more underrated players in program history. His near-side low to high lefty rip will forever be printed in my brain.

Credit the staff and players for playing with intention and focus throughout the whole game.
I love Hiltz (best shooter in college lacrosse) but he’s appropriately rated. #2 recruit in his class, draws the second pole, hasn’t won a ton. Can’t rag on Joey and love up Hiltzy.

Hope they go on a run. Love aggressive Hiltz.

Get how ya explained the unreleased push n all. But how does our faceoff guy get flagged for offsides when down 3 guys already
That I’m guessing was due to needing 4 on our defensive half that made Mullen offside on that face off.

Edit - so as soon as he won it and stepped over midfield he was off.

But don’t we have 4 back already with the 3 d poles n goalie? Which is normally what need back ?

Pretty sure they had to have him on the defensive half to keep the 4-3 required.

concurrent penalties, whether both teams or one, are locked in.
meant to calm the game down in a situation where penalties are flying.
I have a question about your Hoo's team. I hadn't seen much of them this year, but I caught most of last week's game vs. Duke. I was rooting for Virginia, and I became more and more frustrated by Millon. He seems to lack awareness, or lax IQ, if you will. Is that just one man's opinion, was it simply a bad game for him or something else entirely?

he's been allowed or encouraged to do what he's been doing throughout the year without coaching fixes to change. and again, might've been encouraged.

there are aspects to their coaching over the years that i've been a critic of, but they have won their fair share. this year, they didn't. so a microscope should come with that. i don't put much of this on millon. he should've been coached. i've said all year he can be a good to v good pass first guy and then things will open up. he isn't a dodge first guy against teams' #1, to me that was evident last year even as he wasn't going against those guys. the coach(es) disagreed, i guess. and they let it go on or encouraged it all year.

Hiltz is a menace lol. His answer to the 2nd question, somehow turning being the most penalized team (though somewhat convincingly lol) into a positive, & ensuing eyebrow raise may be the most Canadian sports thing I’ve ever watched, in the best possible way.
Hiltzy is an all timer man. Kid has quietly done it every year since he stepped on campus. Tough gritty let's his play speak for itself. Should be the poster of what a cuse lax player is
