Sources: Notre Dame investigating potential academic fraud that could involve football players

Notre Dame administrative officials are investigating instances of potential academic fraud on campus that could include several members of the Fighting Irish football team, sources have told Yahoo Sports.

Sources said four members of the football team were interviewed by school officials Friday: receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive back KeiVarae Russell, defensive linemanIshaq Williams and linebacker Kendall Moore. The probe also is looking at non-athletes, sources said.

The situation was described to Yahoo Sports as a potential “honor code violation,” which could result in the ineligibility of the players. Under NCAA protocol, if any fraud that occurred impacted players’ eligibility the school could ultimately vacate victories. Both Daniels and Russell were significant players during Notre Dame’s 2012 season, when the Irish went 12-0 before losing to Alabama in the BCS Championship Game.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson missed last season due to an academic issue that was reportedly an honor code violation. This is believed to be a separate situation.

Sources said the NCAA is aware of the situation, but the school initiated the investigation and has handled the inquiry itself to this point. A source described the school’s knowledge of the potential fraud as “recent” and indicated that the academic questions came to light this month.

Multiple requests for comment from Notre Dame officials by Yahoo Sports were not immediately returned Friday afternoon.

I don't care what college, academic fraud is unacceptable. The fact that Notre Dame's pompous fan base and Brian Kelly's ego have to deal with this feels like justice somehow.

That being said, I feel like there should be a minor league for tremendous athletes who just aren't students.

its the most expensive item on the menu, but yes, that pipe dream is alive!!

Russell was a projected 1st round pick in the draft and considered one of the best CB's in the country this season. Daniels was WR #1, and Ishaq was going to be DE #1 this season. Moore wasn't projected to start I think.
