Notre Dame Post Mortem Thread...

This guy could’ve helped save our season.

He’s having a solid year at Marshall. Too bad we weren’t able to keep him around. He’s actually a serviceable backup unlike the dumpster fire qb room we currently have.

There’ll be case studies done years from now in how badly the coaching staff mismanaged the QB room this year.

I don’t see how either the OC or DC should be back next year. JW should not allow it.
With you 100% on Robinson needing to go, but I’m not quite there on Nixon.

While I now have big concerns with Nixon, he unlike Robinson, at least has shown that his system works well when you have the right QB.

Robinson’s defense has been bad from day one and has shown us nothing to suggest that he can do the job.

IMO, this game has the chance to totally destroy everything that Fran Brown built here. Yes, he is probably the best recruiting coach since Ben Schwartzwalder, but he is not a head coach and frankly is so green that he is not following DART himself. This is a game based on the way we played for RC to harbor through. We now have lost Luke's redshirt, and you know what, once done, why is hell pull him? Unfortunately, the best QB we have is RC, and he is terrible! If recruiting blows up and we lose the talent we have in the transfer portal, will Syracuse make the move to oust Fran? If we get blown out by BC at home next week with near empty stands, the writing may be on the wall. I think we need to give Fran at least another year, but he needs a mentor on coaching basics.

Mac lost to Nebraska 7-63 in Lincoln in 83. We beat #1 Nebraska 17-9 in the Dome in 84. We play ND in the Dome next year. Can history repeat?
Right, and we made the front page of the NY Times the next day when we beat #1 Nebraska. Back then we were coming off a 10 year rebuilding of the program. We are in a much better position now. I was a freshman in 1973 and this is not the worst.

1. We haven’t seen his O yet vs a decent D.

2. When QB1 has an off day the O looks bad.

3. When you lose QB1 the O is inept.

Too high risk IMO to keep him.

It still shocks me that he played Filardi. His talent level is D2.

Even if Carney can’t pass, we are better off having him run 20x a game.

And how bad do the other QBs have to be? Why are they here on scholarship?

Can’t believe 2 weeks prep and we saw that effort all around.

Carney & 70% running plays, wildcat style, would have been an interesting offensive scheme. But, hey, we'll never know.

I'm still all in on Fran but this is the first time I've been disappointed. Today's performance does not reflect what he professes. And sending out 4 freshmen as captains may be a nice investment in the future but we paid a high price in the present. Live in the present, Fran.
I have been disappointed in the staff for a month. The decision-making and seeming lack of ability to work with the team we have has me questioning if they have any upside to coach up a team.
I would like to add to your last sentence with a quote from John Maynard Keynes, " in the long run, we're all dead".

It would be really interesting to know how much of last year's offensive strategy and playcalling success was really Kyle McCord. I'm not saying his arm talent, which is unarguable. I'm talking about scheme and playcalling.

I think a lot of it was Kyle.

It comes down to decision making. Questionable calls from an OC can be covered by a qb who makes good decisions within the play tree (check down vs first read) or audibles out of a bad situation based on the defensive front. Yesterday Filardi made two really dumb decisions in the first quarter which led to pick 6’s. McCord wasn’t infallible, he did the same thing against Pitt last year but overall his decision making was very high level and led to Jeff Nixon thinking he was a better play caller than he actually was.

As regards upside/ceiling I’m surprised there haven’t been more comparisons between Fran and Mike Locksley at Maryland. Great recruiter, mediocre results over time.

My main hope going into this year was just doing enough record wise to avoid losing the buzz and momentum Fran and co. had built from last year. I knew there was danger in that happening, but I thought the floor was more like 5 games (possibly 4).

The thing that is most disappointing to me is that our coaches got exposed. If you don't even look at our record, what we have all seen, is just not good coaching on many levels. I can't tell you how much I hate how the QB situation has been handled. To have Filardi as our best option going into a game against ND (especially since in his last start he was terrible), is just a really poor job on the coaching staff.

You can’t lose like this and not make changes to the staff. You just can’t. The kids flat out quit and I really don’t blame them. Since Angeli went down we didn’t change a single thing or make any kind of adjustments other than sometimes we’ll go random revolving door at QB for drives at a time. Deer in headlights the second Steve Angeli went down.
Bingo. Get rid of anyone on staff whos there purely to recruit. Fran is a great recruiter. We need x’s and o’s and developers. Counter Fran’s lack of experience with guys who can flat out coach. Recruits will come.

There’s clearly been dissent within the team this year. Guessing a few rotten apples can spoil the bunch. I think it was Carlson who mentioned you normally have teams fighting for the Seniors to go out right but most of the(huge) Freshman class has zero connection to the Seniors. DART doesn’t seem to be doing its job.

I’m still in on Fran but lots of things have to be changed, difficult conversations had and just a reset of sorts.

They at least pulled their starting QB & RBs in I believe mid to late 3rd qtr. And at one point in the 4th qtr the announcers noted a backup senior WR was in.. The problem was their first set of subs are better than our starters. Did they actually put walkons in? I don't know. Maybe the last play when we scored the TD.
They put in a lot of Seniors in the 4th quarter.
I don’t know about walk-ons

Nope it all stems from the loss
Well yes and no. A great QB running a high powered offense hides a bad defense. Losing Angeli exposed our D this year but our defense has been terrible since ERob took over. We’re only now really noticing it.

There was a reference to our game on the CBS broadcast of the Jets-Ravens game today. In the 4th qtr during a mention that Derrick Henry is approaching Jim Brown as the 11th highest all-time rushing leader in the NFL, play-by-play announcer & SU/Newhouse alum Andrew Catalon said "I'm just glad you guys haven't brought up where Jim Brown played his college football today". Charles Davis said "Andrew, you're standing next to 2 guys who are nothing if not compassionate." Later Jason McCourty said "Andrew. Syracuse didn't play yesterday." He's right, we didn't.

Derrick Henry ended the game 17 yards behind Jim Brown.
