You guys all miss the big picture, the entire point.That's a great point. It's basically up to ND where they end up, and if they prefer the ACC they can stabilize things and possibly stop the realignment cycle for a while. Staying Independent is not going to be an option for them forever.
Also, a point that I think some are missing is that if they join the ACC it's a safe bet it'll be an automatic bid for them anytime they win the conference. So they can schedule four tough non-conference games, lose them all, and still have a manageable path to a playoff spot.
ND wants to end up permanently right where it is, a football independent.
It doesn't want to join, create, or stabilize a conference.
ND does not believe it will ever be forced into a conference.
Right after the playoff teams were announced, ND AD Pete Bevacqua said this:
"We love being independent in football. It’s part of our DNA,” Bevacqua said. “We have zero intention of changing that. It’s part of who Notre Dame is. Quite frankly, this further cements our independence. We are out there fighting for ourselves. That’s something we accept.”
