Now that GMac is HC, what does next year's squad look like?

I trust Gerry more than myself on talent evaluation. I didn't think that needed to be typed out but I will clarify that.

I've said multiple times I'm okay with us bringing in Doty if he's a 7th or 8th man. I don't think Folefac would do much in the ACC besides be a practice player. If those guys were coming from LIU, Howard, or Prairie View, people would be losing their minds.

I also don't think we should bring anyone on the current roster back. We need ACC level talent to compete for a tournament spot. We should all want that.
What exactly is ACC talent we just had a team with 2 five stars and a 4 star and the coach just got fired.....

you may well be correct - but 1 game is 1 game

jyare davis and lampkin also had great showings in the ncaat as well FWIW
***************

roster constructon wont be based on mere talent accumulation but how all the pieces fit together and making sure the entire roster can do all the things necessary

so anyone who thinks gerry already knows what the roster will be doesnt get it...he will based everything on how it all fits together

************

and thats how it needs to be! if you have a PG that cant penetrate like george but rely your ffense on PG penetration, like red, doesnt matter how much talent you have or dont have...

cant have holes in your overall scheme and approach and how that matches to which players you have
Agree. Was just thinking about this. On paper people might want to see more stars next to the names or splashy pickups but I don’t think gmac cares about that at all.

He’ll spend the bank but theres going be a whole list of criteria he wants first before looking at the ESPN top 100 transfer portal or the dozen other sites out there now ranking all these players.

I will take it one step further. I think Doty would be an upgrade over Starling. May sound crazy saying it now. But as an overall player, Doty is better than Starling. Remember this post, this time next year and can’t say I didn’t tell you so lol
I mean, JJ was borderline unplayable for much of the last 3 months. Not sure Doty will translate but JJ was a net negative for much of the season.

Just for the record, Lampkin was a good college player. Key cog for a legitimately good college team at Colorado. He was just a horrendous fit for our roster.

if youre running AAU style ball, rankings are all that matter...just roll the ball out and see what happens...but for that youd need pretty much the best roster in the country, and even then it wouldnt work.

Duke doesnt do that. didnt work for kentucky, really.

i watched an interview with gerry talking about all this and it got me excited bc he mentioned the x's and o's aspect of what hes looking for very specifcally in terms of his offensive sets...like having a forward who can make a certain pass in a certain situation etc...

and i think having so many holes in rosters lately...has been impossible to overcome. having bigs who cannot do much other than be tall. having pgs who arent pgs and cant penetrate. having shooting guards that cant shoot etc...not sure all of that will get fixed but i suspect it will be much much better now. fingers crossed

i look forward to players who are well rounded and can do everything on the court even if they arent "5 star" players...because I think those are the players that impact winning the most

which is my point: a "good player" who is a bad fit for a given roster...isnt a "good player" for that team

it really doesnt matter how good any player is in a vaccuum...it matters how good they be will for SU (in terms of roster construction)

we as fans tend to judge players based on how "good" they are in absolute terms...but my point is we shouldnt and the coaches definitely shouldnt in roster construction. its a team sport.

(players themselves know they are judged as individuals so they care alot about how good they are as individuals bc that effects their earnings and career...but why should we? nd especially why should we make that the ONLy thing we look at when wanting players??)

i agree lampkin is good, in a general sense, but since he didnt fit what red could do he wasnt good for the purposes of SU and budget expense.

Good post, CC

Gerry also talked about building out his roster - especially via the portal - by finding skill sets that are interdependent to the skill sets of the other players he will sign. Meaning he is looking at the roster construction as a whole (top down), rather than adding individual talent and then trying to mesh the pieces later (bottom up). We have seen the impact of having a poorly constructed rosters.

George I get, but I'm baffled by the lack of interest in Freeman.

He absolutely checked out. Bad look. But there's a lot of talent there, and if fire is what Gerry brings, why don't we think that can be something he helps Freeman with? Wouldn't that be exactly what he needs?

So again, shouldn't we put some faith in Gerry's coaching to help turn talented guys around.
I mean sure but for less money. 1 cancer cell starts the whole thing.

I forget if this question has been answered but can NIL $ be tied to production on court? Essentially pay for performance

According to Evan Miya, Dotys value this year was about the same as Braedon Shrewsberry for Notre Dame and higher than someone like Derek Dixon. Miya does adjust his formula for competition so at the best he projects as a middle of the road ACC starter or a very high end bench guy.

But that doesn't take into account that players improve.

It sounds like he’s giving us a nice little discount, at least with the NIL number. Folefac will be less than Doty. Kiyan/Sadiq shouldn’t require huge raises….

Plenty of NIL to get a true difference maker or 2. Let GMac pick his PG….. Open the wallet

Donny could still be good with real coach..im ok if we keep him

Everyone needs to understand that Donnie is the small forward, not the power forward.
He is too poor on defense and not physical enough.
He's a good defensive rebounder, though; I will give him that.

But start Sadiq White at the 4 and whoever top center you buy in the portal.

I would start Kingz over Anthony or Doty, if he got another year and chose to come back.

We need an elite PG, but we also need a viable back-up.
And we need another good 3 pt shooter off the bench.
Could that be Fennell for one of those roles (or both)? I think he's got skills; just needs a chance.

I think Soare is OK for a backup center, or maybe a third center.
We need an outstanding SF - can that be Donnie?
Or do we need someone more dynamic on the drive?

yeah you said what i meant to say, only better haha

we saw the same interview, I guess

i go back to a recent article talking about waglers recruitment by illinos staff and how they have 4 variables in assessing a recruit: positional size, basketball IQ, basketball character and no skill deficiencies.

for me, this is perfect and it, in a nutshell...if you look at who SU has recruited the last 10 years, how many players would score well with this system? very few, imo..extremely few.

ok, its rare a player has all 4 but still...ir should be the goal

as just one example, sooo many opposing centers have been much more skilled than SUs bigs lately, even at schools like colgate etc.. opposing centers shoot 3s all the time...never for SU...it just boggles my mind in terms of what skills and profiles have been targeted and deemed "good enough".

throw rankings out the window - skilled players with proper size and proper mentality/intelligence. thats all.

"Everything I do is Satire" is the first line of this clown's bio.

Truly embarrassing if you thought this was real. Literally took one second to check.

We are in a literacy crisis in this country.
It's been pretty eye-opening how much fake stuff has been posted here over the past few weeks. Often repeatedly.

Get over yourself, it's not that serious. We all know Doty is going to end up at Syracuse. Moesch, too.

It has nothing to do with him “getting over himself” it’s nauseating seeing people post the same BS accounts, and sometimes the exact same BS post over and over when It does nothing but stir BS rumors and narratives in the threads.

You can get over it, too. Y'all take this stuff way too seriously, yelling "fake news!" about basketball.

This thread is frustrating. Can we at least agree that Doty is the only Siena player that we would target in any other scenario, and that if anyone else from Siena comes here it is only because of GMac? With the amount of NIL money being predicted, I want to be excited about truly program-changing portal acquisitions. We haven't had a star player in years.
