Offensive Changes

QB's job it to get the ball into the hands of his playmakers. He didn't.
It was a bad call, made worse because he then had to leave the game after getting crushed on the tackle.

A fast guy w/ another guy as lead blocker, and the WR's also out there?
Yeah, you take your chances on that 10/10 times.

*the back is actually Pierre not Jordan.

I agree the read is the DEnd, but I don't necessarily agree it was the right read or that the DE would've blown it up. I think Jackson is deep enough and running fast enough that he gets around the DE/edge and if he does, Pierre is there to block the LB. (note Elmore is also pulling)

In slo mo I think Pierre actually blocks the DE and Jackson makes it to the edge. The OLB goes inside out (meaning his first 4 steps are to where the DEnd is currently in this frame), which imo, would've enabled Jackson to get outside, by where the #10 is visible; keeping in mind Jackosn is almost at a half sprint at this point. The play though would've only have been successful if Pierre makes a good block and Nykiem holds his; probably both unlikely.

it’s definitely not certain to say handing the ball off would've had better results, and obviously Tommy doesn't know anything beyond his gut read, but I firmly believe he should've handed the ball off.

Personal opinion on the play design, not great. I think if you're going to run a jet sweep you crash the tackle down and pull the right guard (not the LG), he would be on the DE quick and the RB takes the OLB/Safety.

Yes that’s a great shot no way he should give it there and the rib is never gonna geybto him the lb is there as well . Idk they play

I think we can all agree that whatever they were doing in the redzone with Rex was doomed from the start.

Why can't qadir white be thrown in their lets see what he's got hes a 4 star i dont care what his weight is or any of that, give him a chance and lets see, when it comes to gilbert i really am not convinced i did not like the hire from the start but am trying to root for him, he's certainely had mixed results but did a horrible job at USF, the run game does not seem to be a strength of his, and him putting up good numbers with the talent he had at texas in the big 12 shouldnt be all that suprising, i am not sold on him, TD will have his chances this week, hope they can block, idk why sterling dont get him going with some short quick easy throws to develop things get the drive moving, 4 yards on first down would be a nice start.

Hurt.

gotcha, any idea if its season ending or he'll return?
The gout can be pretty fickle, so it's hard to say.

I'm just funnin'. He doesn't have the gout.

I don't think.

So if you're keeping score at home..

Bleich - hurt (and treated unfairly by the corrupt NCAA, but I digress)
Dakota - hurt
Red - hurt
Froumy - hurt
Q. White - hurt
P. Davis - limited

Seems like a lot.
I would say so, that's a whole offensive line unit plus a guy...

That's crazy.

I think the biggest problem with the offensive scheme is the running game is too predictable by really only running between the tackles.

It’s pretty easy for the defense to scheme not having to worry about containing the edge. Also, the opposing defense can bring pressure up the middle without having to worry about leaving the outsides unprotected.

Running outside a little more will force the d-ends off the ball north-south and create more of a pocket for TD. Not to mention help with play action to move blockers laterally and help bring more 1 on 1 situations deeper in the field.

This play is horribly designed.

In theory you want the right DE to follow the tackle who blocks down, but this is not 1975 so that alone isn't enough in today's game. The RB releasing outside keeps the DE outside. Why not have him go forward and just get in the DEs way? Then you can hand it off on the sweep. If the slot gets in the way of the OLB then we have a 1 on 1 with the S.

Also, you are trying to read option the right DE and have no one blocking the left DE. How does that make any sense? So even if your QB makes the correct read, he ain't getting anywhere.
Why is Elmore pulling? If he takes the DT and Servais takes the DE, Tommy has a chance to make a play. We aren't running inside so who is Elmore supposed to block? The Mike? He wouldn't even factor into the play.

The MIKE is who I think Elmore actually blocked. I’d have to watch again to be sure. When Tommy pulls it down he goes right and follows Elmore, but by that point it’s taken so long it just get swallowed up.

I assume Elmore pulling has nothing to do with the jet sweep and everything to do with the 2nd option which is the qb keeper; and option#2 appears to be designed to go right (inside that DE.)

if I’m even remotely close in my assumptions it’s freaking horrible. Just run a normal jet sweep. No need to overthink things. KISS.

edit* The more I think about it, the right tackle and right guard crash down with Elmore pulling. If this IS actually a designed QB run with Elmore pulling, instead of a jet sweep 1st option, then I give up.

We have had years when a specific unit really got hit hard with injuries.

One year we had our first 4 or 5 RBs all hurt at the same time, and ended up using Diamond Ferri, who started at safety, as the primary RB. That was the game he went crazy against his hometown team (BC), leading Syracuse to an unlikely end of season win that made the handful of BC students that went to the game cry on their sombreros (I think they were going to the Fiesta Bowl had they won).

Another year almost our our experienced linebackers got hurt and we had some really young players forced into action. Off the top of my head, I think Nate Hensley was one of them.

Another year, most of our DEs got hurt and we ended up moving an inexperienced outside linebacker, Duke Pettijohn to DE. He ended up thriving there and had a terrific career as a DE.

We have had some bad years with injuries and attrition with the OL. But I can’t remember a year as brutal as this one for this unit.

Our two deep probably should have looked something like this:

LT Servais/Red
LG D Davis/P Davis
C Vetterello/Ilaoa
RG Bleich/Tisdale
RT Bergeron/Petry

That is a pretty solid OL. I think it would be at least average in the ACC and perhaps a bit above average.

But Dakota gets hurt. Pat Davis gets hurt. Froumy, who would be the next guy, also gets hurt. Bleich is hurt (and also ineligible because the NCAA gets confused by shiny objects).

Red was our only backup OT reasonably ready to play and he got hurt, so moving an OT to OG was not an option. Our backup C is a true frosh with no experience, so moving his is not really an option either.

We were forced to move a fullback (Elmore) to OG.

It has been an unbelievable stretch of bad luck. What a shame.

I think a couple of the injured O lineman will be ready to suit up for the Duke game , man if we can beat GT. sat. and not have any significant injuries that would be a big relief for all of us.

All I know is I just clicked game preview on ESPN and to see 8.0 points per game through 2 weeks is absolutely shocking. I didn’t think that was possible in college football let alone for an acc team. There has to be some major improvement this week. Don’t care if they lose 80-50. I just want to see points

Froumy was really coming on and would have contended for significant playing time.

I heard the same. Just a brutal run of bad luck for many players.

How did so many OL get injured when we didn't have spring ball and limited fall contact?
For real that just eats me up not knowing how these guys all got so banged up I really thought after last season this unit we be fully ready redeem themselves with stronger healthier bodies and a better understanding of their responsibilities, and of course about a week before the season starts Dino starts to give those little hints about all the guys who are banged up and so on and so on Its getting really old.

Last year Dino was quoted as saying he was going to look into our injury situation. Basically a top to bottom review of how we train ect...
That many injuries to one unit seems strange. Maybe its bad luck. Regardless its another wasted year for many of these players. Dino preaches about the Hippos and Elephants hopefully he will pull it together and add some to his circus. At this point he has more than enough clowns.

For a little context, we have often played only the top five all season, with one or two spares. We have not rotated guys in the OL, like happens at other positions. Bleich was injured at Florida and wasn’t going to be ready to start the season.

The injury that affected the starting five was Dakota. Are any of the others even if healthy actually better than Elmore?

So, let's reverse the roles then. Have Tucker take the inside runs and let Jordan run the special package plays.
Regardless of the plays run, I thought Tucker showed that he should be getting some carries, at least over Pierre, who I think has lost his chance for the time being by not making much of an effort to chip blitzing defenders.
The problem there is likely that we require the RBs to make the line calls and Tucker probably isn't ready for that, especially after an abbreviated preseason.
