Offensive Changes

For a little context, we have often played only the top five all season, with one or two spares. We have not rotated guys in the OL, like happens at other positions. Bleich was injured at Florida and wasn’t going to be ready to start the season.

The injury that affected the starting five was Dakota. Are any of the others even if healthy actually better than Elmore?
Vet needs to step up his game.

How did so many OL get injured when we didn't have spring ball and limited fall contact?

If I remember Bleich got surgery from his injury last year so even if he was eligible he was going to miss a little time this season. Also think Dakota was hurt in spring ball, but I figured he would be healthy for fall camp.

The problem there is likely that we require the RBs to make the line calls and Tucker probably isn't ready for that, especially after an abbreviated preseason.
I agree but he should see some snaps on 1st and 2nd down.

I was doing some homework on Dinos stops and realized that he has never had success with a QB that he has recruited mostly due to his short stops but its a fact. Next is that he has always had teams that could run the ball. we may be missing our top 2 RBs much more than we think.

90% of the passes (at least) must be out within 3 seconds-Swing passes to Jordan/Tucker, quick passes to slots and TE's-Use the middle of the field.
That sounds nice and all, but it’s just not the offense . I wouldn’t hold your breathe waiting for this.

QB aside, where can the team turn on offense.

In looking at the game participation reports for the last two games what is very surprising is that while the defense has been playing 2 deep +, the offense has a much more limited participation.

Other than the starters the other WR's that have appeared in both game are Sharod Johnson, Courtney Jackson, and Justin Barron.

Isaiah Jones has played, I'm guessing on specials.

No Hendrix

15 WR's on the roster (I know some are walkons). Where is the production going to come from?

RB - IMO Tucker needs to be the feature back, JJ the swiss army knife.

TE - Mahar has played, I'm guessing on specials. Maybe they need to go even more 2Tight 2Wide and get Benson or Hackett in the slot. If they want to run bubble, do it with those guys blocking instead of NJ.

OL - Ilaoa has played, like to see him get time at Center and either move Vettorello over to RG or sit him. Need crisper snaps and need to stop the interior of the OL collapsing quickly on pass pro.

Approach, would like to see earlier throws to get the defense out of the box and stay with the chains.

Great job by Tucker. Now need to get Jordan touches in space

devito had a good game--he still missed several throws, and panics. i am a tucker fan, he showed it last week he has guts. reminds me of strickland with his attitude--tough---- i remain concerned regarding our tackling particularly on the ends. we seem to get a hand on folks but they slip through.---very pleased for team, in particular the "upper classmen" that have had to take the heat. don't we have some ol starters still out??

Yeah, we probably went to him a bit too much. He had 100 yards at the half, and finished with 112.

We need to keep mixing things up. Starting the game with a pass to Hackett was a great thing to see.

Tackling was shoddy. Might be attributed to youth. Their o line seemed to be in control until their QB play got in the way and our D playmakers did their thing

A change we absolutely need is in short yardage, especially near the goal line.

Shotgun formation makes little sense as it allows time for penetration and the RB is at a dead stop when they get the ball. It is idiotic trying to run that inside the 5. I rather see us go 5 wide and try to throw. Or if the D does indeed spread out when you go 5 wide, you can run the QB up the middle.

If you insist on using the shotgun, run wildcat. Instead of the QB being out there put an extra OLmen in the game. You can add a LG and put Rhino as a FB and lead blocker with a direct snap to Tucker. That play will work a lot better in goal line situations vs the crap we run. Also for some reason football coaches love pulling their Gs in short yardage, which is usually where the play gets blown up. With Rhino at FB he can act as the pulling G, without actually pulling a G.

M. Williams was lined up at fullback for Tucker's 2nd TD run.

Huge improvement for the offense, but plenty more to do. Need to involve the TEs more in the offense and figure out a way to get the ball to Jordan in space (per Babers, he had an "owie" today).

I like the progress I saw today, but there was still a lot of meat left on the bone and I am still comcerned with the situational awareness of our OC and QB. In the first half there was a 3rd and 3 where it appeared as if every reciever ran a verticle route and TD had nowhere to go with the ball when there was pressure. There has to be some sort of short option there where we can at least get the first down.

Then on a 3rd and 5 with about 9 minutes to go and I think we were up 10, TD throws a deep ball to Taj with two defenders there. If the ball is thrown perfectly there, it's a great play because he had a little space, but it had to be perfect. If it's 2nd and 5 that's a great time to take that shot. On 3rd and 5, just get the first down if someone isn't wide open deep. It was hard to tell for sure, but it looked like NJ had position on his guy maybe on a slant with enough room to get the first down.

Overall though, I liked the improved running game and the way we utilized more short passes, especially in the middle of the field.

Good is strong. Dropped 2 in the bucket that are the biggies but man has it been difficult to string together 1st downs and go on a drive or 2.

Offense was functional. Shows what being able to get positive plays in the a gap and adequate protection do for this offense

needs to get better but it was a step
And probably no more than that.

Definitely benefitted from some short fields, hit on some big plays. Still lots of work to do in terms of offensive execution.

But today was a positive step in the right direction.

Defense did amazing. Some tacking issues but corrected in second half. Secondary very strong.
Tucker back 1A. Would still like more runs to the corners or pitches.
OL played well today.
I still have concerns with TD. He has the arm to throw the long ball but seems wants to just hit the home run play. Several times in 3 and 5 instead of going short for the first down he threw to Taj deep in double coverage. I still see him panicking and not going through his progressions. On one of the sacs where holding was called I counted 8 seconds before he went down.
I would also like to see some of our taller/bigger receivers given more chances. Taj is a good receiver but I do not see him coming back to the ball if it’s under thrown or going up for the ball.
Our D is playing great but we are not going to force five turnovers a game. We have to move the ball consistently and not hope for touch down on deep passes.
I’m glad we won today but I feel now you won’t see any changes on O which will cost us games that we could win throughout the season.

Tucker stepped up which allows TD to shine. Great job by the true frosh and TD!

Give credit where credit is due ... TD, facing criticism that would make most of us climb under a table and curl up in the fetal position, played like a warrior. Wasn’t perfect. No player was. But he sure was gutsy and he delivered some great plays. O line, also under siege, put up a hell of a fight. More variety to the play calling. (One quibble, we threw to TE on first play for a first down and never hit that play again.) Tucker is a difference maker. NJ, between returns and pass catches, is emerging as a big time weapon. Taj just keeps making plays. And love the potential of our defense.
Let’s see what we can do from here.

Guys, they will never use the middle of the field in this system. Its been 5 years already and Gilbert works within the same framework.

Well, that makes our offense so much more predictable, and constantly throwing these sideways balls to the sideline receiver sets is completely dependent on having 1-on-1 talent who can beat the man across from them. Come to think of it, it sounds a lot like our offense in basketball.

Use the middle of the field! Run the slant to the slot receiver. Run a tight end over the middle. Throw the occasional post patten, not just deep balls down the sideline. Use the whole field!

Why can't qadir white be thrown in their lets see what he's got hes a 4 star i dont care what his weight is or any of that, give him a chance and lets see, when it comes to gilbert i really am not convinced i did not like the hire from the start but am trying to root for him, he's certainely had mixed results but did a horrible job at USF, the run game does not seem to be a strength of his, and him putting up good numbers with the talent he had at texas in the big 12 shouldnt be all that suprising, i am not sold on him, TD will have his chances this week, hope they can block, idk why sterling dont get him going with some short quick easy throws to develop things get the drive moving, 4 yards on first down would be a nice start.

I mean, at a minimum why can't we use White in the goal line package now that Chris Elmore is starting at guard? We used a defensive lineman today; why can't we give White a shot out there?

With how out of shape he looks, I really wonder if he has any explosiveness when the ball is snapped.
