That ends in the current fiscal year, I believe. Next year UCONN needs to find $5-10 million additional dollars from student activity fees or a lucrative (for the AAC) media deal to maintain their athletic budget.

Some of them realize their football program has missed its chance at a P-5 spot, and now they are so bad it's unlikely to ever come. Those UConn fans are saying drop down or go independent in football and get the basketball program back to the Big East, where it can still remain nationally relevant. It would be a best case for them, because there's likely no more conference realignment until 2024 or 2025 - six or seven long years away.
Re: "back to the Big East"

Would the BE want them? A large public university vs. 10 (comparatively) small, mostly Catholic colleges.
Plus, they have a nice double-round-robin setup with the current membership.

The smartest thing the Big East did during conference realignment was not to take UConn. What the Big East has is stability. If they took UConn while UConn went independent for football, UConn would be looking for a better/different landing place elsewhere from the very first day it was back in the Big East.

So?

Umass is looking for a landing spot but it doesn't mean the A10 doesn't want them.

Their football program would be better as an Indy they have 2 other D1 Indys an hours drive in Umass and Army to play every year attendance at the rent wouldn't drop because there is no more civil conflict. There would be more fans at a Umass game than if they played their bitter civil conflict rivals and likely soon to be 2 time defending "National Champion" Golden Knights. In basketball they'd immediately become a recruiting giant again in the NBE for geographic reasons. Currently their players have to play road games in places like Tulsa.

Its a no brainer especially since the AAC is too good for them in both sports and they are dragging it down. The ACC was a lesser league than the Big East in terms of quality of play on the court/field not with regards to prestige and look at the immediate success BC had in it.

But they are idiots. Look what they did to a coach who won them a Natty who is one of theirs. And somehow it looks like they are going to get away with it and not pay him. Their demise is self inflicted.

I think UConn is a much better fit for basketball in the Big East, and they are still somewhat of a name brand. I think the Big East's TV contract would benefit from having another traditional team from the conference's early days. I also think that Madison Square Garden would like to have them back in the league, too.

Very good point.

Works for UConn. For the BE? 11 is a really awkward number.

The big boy leagues are going to 20 games so the number is likely ideal.

With Nova taking a big step back it will be interesting to see how the NBE does on selection Sunday. Right now Marquette is the best team in that conference but a road win @ Marquette while solid isn't going to get you in over another bubble team with an equal resume.

How about this? Add UConn and another midwestern school, like Dayton, which has a strong hoops history but no big time football (unlike Cincinnati, for instance).

Then you create East & West divisions, which would break down like this. Play teams in your division home and home (10 games), then 1 game against each of the teams on the other side - 3 home and 3 away for a 16 game schedule, with everyone having played every team.

East: Villanova, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and UConn

West: Marquette, Butler, Xavier, Creighton, DePaul and Dayton

That's a pretty good league.

Not bad for a FCS program...I mean not NDSU or James Madison strong but solid for a future Patriot League Member.

UConn announced an average attendance of 21,000 at home football games last year, but only half of that number actually entered the stadium - Hartford Courant

Fun Fact: We sent more folks to the a bowl game in Florida than they did in any home game.

I get a kick out of the OT: Quitting smoking thread on top, might be a bad time for uconn fans...maybe wait for the season to be over?

I was thinking the same thing for blood pressure. This may be a rough couple of years/decades to be a UConn fan.
