OG: PFF's National TE of the Week

Yeah, Gadsden is really revolutionizing the tight end position.
Dalton Kincaid 6-4 240, TE Buffalo Bills

Yeah it’s so weird to call Gadsden a TE.

Yeah. I believe Jay Novacek for the Jimmy Johnson era Cowboys was about 235 lbs and not counted on as a blocker. I think Dallas Clark for the Colts was similar size to Gadsden. Gadsden plays like a WR but I'm fine with him being called a TE.

Wasn't there that really good TE for Kentucky back when we played them in a bowl game that was around 225 lbs?

I get it, it’s a good bit (although you’ve had better).

However most teams deploy a flex/ slot Tight End, and then have their other two TEs who are more of your traditional beefy boys who can put their hand in the dirt and play specials.

For some teams, the flex TE is their #1 TE, for other teams he is their #2 TE.

OG isn’t revolutionizing the Tight End position, this is just what it has evolved into. OG is a TE in the NFL, therefore he is a TE now.

As Tony Soprano says - “end of discussion.”

I always thought that was just Dino playing games with positional roles. Until the OU game. OG is looking bigger and TEish. A quick glance at current top NFL TE's shows OG is right there. In addition to Kincaid:

Pitts - 6'6" 240
Engram - 6'3" 235
Schultz - 6'6" 242
Bowers - 6'4" 240

OG is about 10lbs away from being a prototype NFL TE these days.

Kincaid played at the University of Utah. They do a lot with the TE position. Always have high performing players there. They have a guy named Brant Keithe playing TE that I kid you not is a 7th year senior.

Kincaid was a legit receiving threat but he did play on the line as a traditional tight end far, far more than Gadsden. Gadsden very clearly was a WR that had the TE label affixed before he really played like one. Kincaid was a legit TE the whole time in college that grew into a big pass catching threat.

Rest assured, I will beat this joke into the ground, even moreso than I already have.

And that's a promise you can count on.

Pretty sure OGII is 240+ these days.
So, he’s right there already.

But - even if he is a few lbs “light”, that’s pretty much irrelevant.
Dude has the requisite size to play like those guys you’ve listed.

Vernon Davis
George Kittle
Travis Kelce
Tony Gonzalez

They're all close to Gadsden's size. I think Davis was about 240 when he entered the league. And none of those guys were blocking TEs. It's really not that rare. I don't think it matters that he's grown into the position. He was never fast enough to be an NFL WR, so getting bigger was going to be his ticket.

Guys grow into other positions all of the time. Freeney was about 220 as a freshman and ended up being 265. We've had guys grow from TE to OT. Bullock was a 200 lb safety that grew into a MLB. I think Nate Hemsley was a 195 lb safety when he was switched to LB and grew to 235.

It's not his weight. Weights don't determine position. Position on field determines Position, that is why it's called a position.

I went to the Quad Walk and OG is a tank. Even though I knew his height/weight, I was legit shocked when he walked by.

Where does Travis Kelce line up most of the time?
