OL Airon Servais is returning

Who'd have thought Servais and Back would stay and not Hackett? I think most guessed the opposite.
I was one of those opposites but man this is great news for the program I hope we get even better news as time goes on this team needs some breaks they have had a lot of bad luck this year. To get TD. Black. and Servais back within 48 hours that's HUGE !!!!!

I'm gonna be a wet blanket here but, as happy as I am to see a lot of experience back for next year, these are the same players who also get penalized a lot and, for the last two years, don't start to play well until half the season is done. It's been a particularly bad couple seasons for the OL and the coach needs to bear a lot of a responsibility here.
Agree. The penalties have been a big issue. It is also the same line. It’s good servaise is coming back but still need two transfers.

why?, how many snaps did Bliech play? How many games did Dakota play? How many games did Servais gut out with an injury?

How many spring practices and off season strength and conditioning have Bergeron and Tisdale participated in?

look at it this way you will have Tisdale, Vetterollo, Red, Froumy, and Ilaoa competing for one spot.

thats two multi year starters and three well regarded young players, all with legit size as the fifth starter and second string

that is not a position that seems to need bodies. If a another SEC starter falls in our lap sure, but if it isn’t that, pass and use the roster spot where it is needed

Mostly agree. Ilaoa played both Guard and Center in High School. If he can snap at the college level great, if not I would try and find a 300 plus center to come in. Vetrello was pushed back to many times. Froumy is a big guy. He was also injured. We don’t know how well he will come back and he has very little game experience and I dont want Servais back at center again. We could use one big ugly with experience at center. We have not brought in a true center in 5 years if I am recalling correctly.

HUGE!

Next year’s starting oline will consist of 4 returning starters (Servais, Davis, Veterello, Bergeron) that have played together for past 2-3 years. That’s an experienced group that has good chemistry already. Throw in Bleich and that is looking like a helluva of an oline. On level with 2018, IMO. Staying healthy will be key, but looking like with the injured guys coming back next year , there will be some good depth too.

All these players opting to return next year, should put to bed the “players don’t like to play for Dino” nonsense.

It must be Groundhog Day...

Why do we NEED two transfers? Why not one, or three? And which two transfers did you have in mind?

And it should go without saying, but it is not the same line. It may be some of the same players, but it is not the same line. OL is a position with a lot of growth year over year, physically and in execution.

If Babers/Gilbert/Cavanaugh don't think we need two transfers, who do you fire first?

Cavenaugh moved to a consultant and bring in new OL coach. The lines have had excessive amount of penalties. Every year I hear the same thing that the line will be better next year. 2018 was better but a lot of that had to do with ED. We need a true center. Another OT. Freshman will not be ready. We have no idea how players will return from injuries. The OL seemed to be the most injured unit as a whole in the entire ncaa. Depth has always been an issue. I would like to address it now not complain about a lack of depth in the middle of next season.

My first thought - he will own the all time starts record at SU, and probably forever. I don’t believe it’s possible to start 5 seasons in college football in any other non pandemic time frame. Heck he may end up with an NCAA record for most career starts

Ya, center is still a concern for me. We need someone who doesn’t get blasted into the QBs lap right after he hikes the ball. This also kills our run game which is mostly runs up the gut. If we can get a decent center and stay relatively healthy I think the Oline may be OK.

I think our biggest issue with the OL is Cav.

I don’t think he teaches technique well and I think he develops players well.

for example look at the Giants OL. They were AWFUL at the start of the season. Everyone was calling them bums, citing injuries all the stuff we say here.

Joe Judge fired the OL coach a few weeks ago and they have now been one of the best in the league.

I think our issue on the OL comes down to the OL coach

To be fair, the Giants’ line’s improvement happened under the old coach. Granted, Judge was the advocate for them rotating players on the line which has seemed to help a lot, but still.

Anyways, I think it would be wise to at least put feelers out to see if there’s an OL coach willing to make the jump into P5 football.

the interior with Bleich and Davis could be a strength. I wonder if one could be a convert? Servais I’d rather keep out at tackle since we lack depth there more

Elmore was our highest rated/graded lineman. 14th in the ACC at his spot. I understand Serv was banged up. Something seems off, when your "best" is the one thats had the least coaching and developement.

Maybe he can play center

I’ll choose to look at the line that ended the season by blocking for two 100 yard rushers and allowing only one sack against one of the best defenses in the country. I’ll chalk the early season issues to Davis being out and Servais playing hurt combined with the lack of a full offseason S&C program. From that perspective you have five returning starters and add an SEC caliber sixth and feel pretty good!

Just my opinion, but two seasons in a row where the OL doesn't gel until the second half of the season is a problem. COVID was part of the issue for this year. I'm just really worried that we're going to see a repeat of the last two seasons unless a change is made.

Devils advocate. That's what we said, last year. With the same personnel vs NC state? We ran for 3 yards. 9 feet. 108 inches. Just over 4 inches per carry, on 25 attempts. 4 inches per carry. Is that a record?

Just curious, by that train of thought you would definitely keep coach Cav as oline coach and not reassign then since his oline performed that well against ND?

Different qb

I think I'm liking the idea more of bringing in a transfer WR to play outside with Queeley and then move Taj to the slot next year. You'd have Taj and Nykiem (if he returns) at the slots with Courtney Jackson backing them up. And then Queeley/Transfer WR on the outside with Alfrod backing them up, and Hendrix once he get healthy again.
