Watching the Pats last night, they turned their season around in the space of 6 days. How? Their OL had been a mess. Belichek moved some guys around. And, voila, the offense is killer. The new OC needs to give this a lot of thought.

There are more issues than that.

Oh, and let's get one of the best QB/coaching combos of all-time, too.

OL is the key to everything given that you already have the best QB ever

not quite our situation

Our OL has been fine when all healthy. It's been the deadly bad play-calling, poor throwing, penalty-ridden soup that's been killing us.

It's difficult to block in an offense where it boils down to mostly read option. Let them get into a little rhythm with a standard run and pass offense with a little read option thrown and I think they will give a strong effort .

We're #3 in the nation in sacks allowed (0.6 per game) and #40 in rushing. OL isn't that big of a problem. The real problem has been the scheme and QB inconsistency.
The rushing number is skewed. Against solid defenses, the numbers are low. I'm not sure Miller at center is the answer. Others have suggested Trudo moving over.

Millers been fine.

Villes D is really really good.

We needed to score when in the red zone and that game would have been much different.

You don't think that has anything to go with the fact that the quick game is 60 percent of our passing game?

But we didn't!

Quite probably, but Hunt has definitely had time to throw on some of the deeper passes.

I don't think there's any one root cause you can point to as the key to turning things around. The truth is, the problems are multi-dimensional.

Poor QB play, dearth of playmakers, questionable coaching, poor execution, mismanaged game coordination. Take your pick.

The OL,the whole offense for that matter, can look pretty bad when the D seems to know exactly what's coming on 99% of the plays.

we have the same number of 40+ yard plays as USC , WVU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Ohio State

we have more than Miami,Michigan State, South Carolina, BYU, Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame, and Stanford

if you want to limit it to power 5 conferences, we're still not that bad.

there aren't as many big plays as people think.

playmakers

Playmakers are more than just counting the number of 40+ yard plays we have. Opposing defenses have to account for playmakers, which opens things up for other guys. Sometimes a playmaker will only do one thing, but that thing can have a big impact on the game outcome [like Estime's punt return in the bowl].

When you have a bunch of skilled offensive talent that doesn't scare anyone and doesn't do anything special, you lack playmakers. And for all of these 40 yard plays, why aren't we scoring points?

counting 40+ yard plays isn't perfect but it's better than not counting anything

when the offense stinks, it ends up defaulting to, geez if only we had someone awesome who could just run by everyone.

good offenses rip of lots of 10-20 yard gains. it's about scheme and QB. it's surprising how few 40+ yard plays there are across the board.

exactly. No what needs to be done is do a true assessment of your talent to maximize your chances for success. It isn't a spread O with one back in the backfield with what we have here. Time to do a power I run based O with AAM at fullback leading the way for our elusive backs. Of course do a bunch of play action and passes to at least give that threat and allow the run game to succeed.

And oh yeah on our one yard line or theirs DONT put the qb in shotgun and go lateral. Power football right to the LOS!

That's not what it defaulted to in a post where I said: Poor QB play, dearth of playmakers, questionable coaching, poor execution, mismanaged game coordination. Take your pick.

There are systemic issues on offense. There isn't a quick fix. There isn't a magic bullet root cause.

Put AAM behind a fullback pull a guard around and deal out some smash mouth . Then put the elusive guy in when you see the d-line and linebackers looking a little sheepish .

what bothers me some is the use of personnel and plays called for them (ie running AAM wide) and abandoning what works. Why throw once to Ishmael who's hands are awesome and never throw to him again? Why not throw both endzone passes his way instead of Lewis? Because the play was for the slot guy? How about running plays for your best pass catchers?

Why haven't we seen that tight pop pass in like 3 games? stuff's maddening.

I think that your questions have been answered by sacking the OC , why beat a dead horse.
