Anybody heard if some OLs will move to DL? 7 DL (when you cross off guys who weigh 220 lbs) isn't going to cut it.
What does this mean? There are five non-frosh defensive tackles, all of whom weigh at least 280.7 DL (when you cross off guys who weigh 220 lbs).
?? I count 6 DL who are non-FR and > 240 lbs: Ruff, Grosvenor, Samuels, Slayton, Williams, Pickard. What does this mean? There are five non-frosh defensive tackles, all of whom weigh at least 280.
Of the 7 defensive ends listed, Morton (at 220) seems like a prime redshirt candidate, while Walton's position (230) doesn't look to be determined yet. And don't discount Berry because of his weight. He'll probably be a situational guy, but that's another player in the rotation.

The concern is being able to hold up against ACC OL for the duration of a game. In my view, FR will have to play and some OL, as mentioned above - some lower on the depth chart, might be pressed into service.
Freshman will have to play, yes. Harper especially. I disagree on "having" to move an offensive lineman to defense. I think you'd see a lot more 3-3-5 before Donnie Foster moves to nose guard.?? I count 6 DL who are non-FR and > 240 lbs: Ruff, Grosvenor, Samuels, Slayton, Williams, Pickard.

Ooooff...3 - 3 - 5. Invitation to be run on, no?Freshman will have to play, yes. Harper especially. I disagree on "having" to move an offensive lineman to defense. I think you'd see a lot more 3-3-5 before Donnie Foster moves to nose guard.
No doubt, I agree with you on 3-3-5 being the answer, given our depth concerns. However, Duerig to me seems like a guy that potentially could be a DT in a pinch. Not ideal at all though. There's no ideal scenario here.Ooooff...3 - 3 - 5. Invitation to be run on, no?
Maybe. I just grabbed the first name that came into my head. However, Duerig to me seems like a guy that potentially could be a DT in a pinch.
Maybe 3-4 is a better option? There's no ideal scenario here.
Still, that's next year. This year already has that white knuckle feel to it with this unit. One or two injuries and there is going to be a lot of drinking...Just gotta hope they bring in 3-4 DT's in the 2018 class. I would guess two JUCO and two Frosh. Or maybe 1 grad transfer, 1 juco, 2 frosh. whatever it is.

I should clarify to say that I'd be shocked if there was a change to the base 4-3. No 3-3-5, No 3-4. I'm just trying to say that they'd seek other options before moving linemen over.We will be fine, no need to move an OL over, no need to switch to 3-3-5, and no need to switch to 3-4.
100% agree that I think they try everything before moving a kid over full time.I should clarify to say that I'd be shocked if there was a change to the base 4-3. No 3-3-5, No 3-4. I'm just trying to say that they'd seek other options before moving linemen over.

This is really spot on. I think a number of developments are encouraging. Hiring Stanard and focusing a lot of the coaching resources (2 out of 3 defensive assistants, correct me if wrong) on the D-line is another. Williams and Ruff have made huge gains in the weight room which are reflected in their playing weights. I've heard Kendall Coleman has also worked extremely hard and made some big gains in functional strength. I even saw a video clip recently of Pickard crushing a 4 ft box jump...not bad for a big guy. All of this bodes well. The hits in depth hurt...the very shabby security blanket that we had is gone. I'm optimistic that the play will elevate this season, but the margins are razor thin. I want to see alot of dline bodies in the 2018 class, it's a must.It seems as though the staff has begun to tangibly address talent deficiencies at several key positional units -- most notably WR, QB, LB, and DB. I feel like that process has already begun at OL, as well, but we still have a ways to go before that group is replenished. Not sure that we have the capacity to "spare" any OL, given that OL was so depleted last season.
There isn't really a good short term answer, beyond having to ride it out and hope that there aren't major injuries. Improvement at DL for both the DT and DE units are going to have to come from within, with the returning players at both roles.
That means that at DT we need to rely upon Samuels to step up and play better than he did last year, for Mt. McKinley to grow into his frame and be ready for a bigger role, for a highly touted kid like Ruff to "grow" into his new position and adapt to playing inside with his hand on the ground, for Harper to contribute in a platoon capacity year 1, etc.
And at DE, that Black / Coleman benefit from being thrown to the wolves last year and are more ready to compete physically then they were as true frosh, for a highly rated guy like Pickard to play to his potential [he didn't contribute much last season], and for Berry to come in as an experienced player who is capable of contributing.
Lots of ifs there, but those things happening seem like a better bet to come to fruition than moving an OL and hoping that they can contribute at a high level.
