OL - Who knows - Updated

Miami seats will be excellent this November...
yes, want to go but it's a bad weekend for us, another commitment, Tennessee in Atlanta will likely be my only regular season game this year

I wish we still had the General at Center as then I would stack this OL against any in the ACC.
Wonder if anyone knows if we tried to keep him or if we let him go. He was a good player for us, it sucked to see him go.

All this assumes that everyone is 100% healthy.

I think Collins is in ink, probably at center. 15 starts at Louisville. Supposedly their best IOL and judged to have superior pass blocking capability. He’s a senior. I’d put Spoon as also in ink. 22 career starts, requisite size, got better through the year. Senior.

Next two are seniors Petry and Ferguson. Petry has 24 starts at SU, has improved every year, staff seems to love him, leader. Ferguson has only 8 career starts, HS 5 star that has way underperformed that ranking. He has one last chance to figure it out. I think he has the inside track to win a job if he approaches his assumed talent level.

Joe Cruz Jr, 4 starts, his one last year was against Miami. Development player, does he step up? Rice, Jr, #1 linemen recruit, total bust at UNC. What’s his story, why hasn’t he gotten on the field other than specials. Zero starts, very limited snaps. Like Ferguson if he can approach his HS ratings don’t know how he wouldn’t be the field.

After that is a world of underclassmen. Bertrand (TAM and Bama) and Pringle (SC) SEC transfers, Pringle very highly rated coming out of HS. My guess is that at a minimum Pringle is the first tackle off the bench. I think Bertrand is with Miller, depth piece.

I’d put Cruz as a starter over Ferguson. Not that pff is everything but Cruz had the best pff grade of returning linemen. Also looked really solid when he played.

It's nice to have potential good players waiting in the wings. And not have to play freshman or sophomores who have no experience at all.

I am also interested in seeing how well conditioned Washington gets this summer for camp. I think if he gets down to 365 ish, builds his endurance and gets some repetitions he could be an absolute monster in the running game as a guard and just tough on pass protection just given size and arm length. No one from Tennessee is going to bull rush that guy.
Love the overall talent infusion this week but coaching now is critical.
I have to admit I’m really hoping Washington can develop into the best version of himself. He seems to be making a go of it. I think Fran had good things to say about him during spring camp. He’ll have a lot of competition but would like to see him play some. Anyone have any perspectives to offer on his chances going forward?

I had an opportunity to meet B Washington, and he is the largest human I have ever met in person. Also, what a nice young man. Very respectful. I don't know a thing about OL but if it was 4th and short I would sure as heck follow him:)

I wouldn't read much into FSU's season last year. Ferguson will be given every opportunity, and if he is as bad as the PFF grades suggest, he won't see the field.

And if he is, then the current OGs are in for a fight for PT. Competition is good for OL.

Ditto for LT. I'm a fan of Mack, and think he could be a poor man's Bergeron, but he'll have to fend off Rice and Pringle.

Point being, these three newcomers at OL weren't brought in just to look impressive getting off the bus. They came here to play, and take somebody's spot. And it is the incumbent's job to keep their spot. Again, great to have competition [versus trying to cobble together 6 or 7 guys just to have a rotation, like in recent years].

You mean 4 newcomers .. Collins too

Yup this is how I see it. That’s a pretty big, athletic, talented line. I like where we are with this group now. The Collins signing is so underrated in my opinion. I love Pringle too. He’s going to be playing on Sundays and we are going to have him for multiple years. Just a big time get
Be nice to get three or four NFL guys out of this unit next two drafts.

Makes it easier to recruit moving forward

Maybe one of the new guys gets a sniff? Spoon potentially too? But three to four will be difficult unless we have a stellar offense next season.

That being said I'm very bullish on our depth.

General agreement. Not as high on Ferguson as you but I think he is one of many in the mix at OG.

You didn’t mention Mack. Given he was the starting LT in the spring, I think he is going to be in the mix and I would pencil him in as the starter for now.

You didn’t mention Washington either and here I really disagree. I think of all the players on the OL unit today, he has the best chance to play on Sundays. Yes, he has to lose some weight and keep it off but the sheer size, strength and athletic ability he has is freakish. I expect that if he gets in shape and stays in shape, he is going to be starting at OG by mid season. He was the guy I was most impressed with in the spring game. Really high on him.

Here is an early depth chart for me. Haven’t seen film on any of the new guys. It seems to me there are a lot of guys with similar size and ability fighting for spots here.

LT Mack Pringle
LG J Cruz Washington
C Collins Stewart
RG Petry Rice/Ferguson
RT Spoon Bertrand

Spoon is much better suited to play RT vs left. I think he's going to have a nice year.
He is and if he stays healthy we’ll be happy. He’s a good athlete for his monstrous size with good weight distribution.

I wouldn’t say I’m high on Ferguson. I should have emphasized the “If”. He’s a Sr with size traits that has more starts and game snaps than most of the other OL. If he can come close in performance to his ratings, he starts.

Agree at Tackle Pringle, Mack are competing for a starting role. I don’t think we see a 6-8 guard. I could be wrong, but if Washington is ready he would be the 2nd OT off the bench.

Love the size of these guys in the mix for our O-line, when is the last time if ever were we this big across the front?

Never

Ellis and Moeolo were big kids but didn’t carry the weight well and were non factors.

Bergeron was the first guy who looked like these guys 6-5 320, and he never looked fat.

Pugh played under 300.
