Class of 2022 OLB AJ Pena (NJ) Portal to Memphis

Visiting Nebraska. Has two stories about Huskers and nothing about SU.

Hopefully we can get him. A lot of our targets in the portal seem to be getting a lot of offers and more money at these other schools. Sucks coach Fran has to work extra hard for a school like cuse, then some big SEC or Big10 school who just give as much money asked and don’t blink.

His IG movie is all about Nebraska and an offer from ECU.
Gotcha, thanks. I thought he was one of the first to visit and figured since he was a northeast guy there was a connection here with staff somehow. Oh well onto the next.

According to some folks in the McCoy thread, an infinite number of years.
We have a McCoy thread? I'd like to read it, but damn it, Jim, I'm a doctor.
Yep Yes GIF by C H A R L Ö T T E

If Fran leaves this will be the reason. The lack of financial resources to compete against the state schools. Espicislly if you want to compete for national championships

He knew this would be an issue when he took the job. SU was never going to compete against the UGAs and tOSUs of the world when it came to athletic donations.

Fran is his own currency. Money is money, but sometimes the man you are going to play for tips the scale in the other direction. Don’t underestimate the cache Fran has in the recruiting world.
Plus, what he is selling: He talks the talk and walks the walk: degree in 3 years, networking to have a job upon graduation, etc.

I hope that we see collective bargaining in the next few years. So that we can end this madness while making sure that the athletes are compensated. Good coaches are fleeing, and the agent situation is a disaster. Many good players are going to be on the outside without a place to play. HS kids are being passed over for portal players. As we all know it's a mess and one that isn't sustainable. Maybe the change in congress will be a positive. Not sure but something needs to happen.

Yes he did. But sometimes the goalposts get moved

Or maybe Fran was telling the truth when he said we would not be pounding the portal this off season, sure there will be offers and few kids that come in but kids interested in the highest dollar will most likely not wind up here. That will never change

yup, it's literally the entire point of a collective bargaining agreement...players would get more protection and schools would get certainty. the ncaa really bungled this up from the get go.

this is precisely the case. he told us what would happen -- we have one of the largest HS classes for a reason. Portal will just be used for a few things. There's also the spring portal.

For us, the portal period is more about preventing defections vs. getting guys.

Agreed. It's great to look at this recruit and this guy at positions of need but who knows who we are actually really going after etc, I highly doubt it's as many kids as people think

I'm sure it would help i restricting portal movement, but I don't know how collective bargaining would restrict access to marketing oneself (NIL). It doesn't happen in professional sports leagues that have collective bargaining, and I doubt the college athletic union (Which there would be one if there is collective bargaining) would agree to it. Doing so works against their best interest.
