Why do we play basketball in the winter? it doesn't use the winter. Why not play it in the spring? We could be playing Lafayette when the temperature outside is less than in the freezing compartment of my refrigerator. We could play Duke when the little birdies are singing. And March Madness could be May Madness. The players could hit the books in the fall semester and make sure they at least remain eligible. Travel would not be such a huge problem. It just seems like it would be easier on everybody.

You say it “doesn’t use the winter…” But of course it does use the winter. The winter is a negative influence. Bball has to be played indoors -for the most part, at least at a high level - and consequently the winter is the best time to play it.

What I like about college basketball in the winter is that it is over in April and then spring has arrived which leads to golden summer and bountiful beautiful fall. And when the leaves are all off the trees, basketball starts again.

It’s the Circle of Life.

Exactly. People say they don't want to spend the end of summer in the Dome for football and now we want to put them in there for basketball when it's nice out?

We don't go to drive in movies during the summer anymore. We go to malls and theaters 12 months a year. And the Dome is air conditioned now. I'll bet those smaller places are, too.

I'll hum that the next time i walk across campus to the Dome with a negative wind chill factor.

It’s an indoor sport created in the mid west of the US.

That's your fault, which is why I now live in Tampa.

Thanks Mufasa!

We NEED basketball to get us through the long winter.

Finish football over the holidays and then start basketball in January. You don't need basketball to get you through the fall.

Because if it were played in the Spring or Summer it would have to compete with the National Pastime and that might not end well.

The National Pastime? You mean the NFL - right?

So right now it's Summer in the Southern Hemisphere but the Winter Olympics are going on. How do you explain that one.
Haha, good point. Maybe because the vast majority of people on earth live in the N.H. as well as much of its land mass. BTW, when will Antarctica start sending athletes?

It would end with March Madness, which does very well. The NBA winds up in July!

Here’s your answer:

At the Springfield YMCA, Naismith struggled with a rowdy class that was confined to indoor games throughout the harsh New Englandwinter, thus was perpetually short-tempered. Under orders from Dr. Luther Gulick, head of physical education there, Naismith was given 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction"; Gulick demanded that it would not take up much room, could help its track athletes to keep in shape[3] and explicitly emphasized to "make it fair for all players and not too rough".[10]
