One Clear Best Hire - Shaheen Holloway

Now that I have some time, I might run it through ChatGpt for a bullet point summary.
Here is a succinct summary of the argument for hiring Shaheen Holloway at Syracuse:
  • Current Candidates Lack Pedigree: Existing options (Gerry, Hopkins, Hodgson, Schertz) lack sustained high-level head coaching success, postseason wins, or experience at a major program.
  • Proven Tournament Success: Holloway famously led 15-seed Saint Peter’s to the Elite Eight in 2022, defeating blue-bloods like Kentucky and Purdue.
  • Defensive Excellence: His teams consistently rank in the top 35 nationally for defensive rating (13th this year), whereas Syracuse has averaged 144th over the same period.
  • Big East Pedigree: As the current Big East Coach of the Year at Seton Hall, he has proven he can beat top-tier competition, including multiple wins over UConn.
  • Resource Maximization: He has achieved elite results at "commuter schools" with limited budgets; he could significantly scale this success with Syracuse’s NIL, fan base, and facilities.
  • Financial & Leadership Fit: He is realistically affordable (estimated $4–$5M range) and at age 50, provides the long-term stability and "culture change" needed to avoid program irrelevance.
Would you like me to draft a formal recommendation letter or a social media post based on these points?

64-54 in the MAAC .542 winning percentage
70-64 int he Big East .522 winning percentage

134-118 .532 winning percentage overall

Why would he even be considered? Last year, his 3rd season at Seton Hall when if you are an upcoming coach this is when you should be hitting it big he went 7-25.

Would rather just have GMac, at least he brings me warm and fuzzy feelings with his awful record and no offensive game plan.

Agreed. If it goes that way I’m out on the program.

The Shaheen Holloway thing just doesn't make sense. If he didn't have enough good skills fundraising at Seton Hall to have real success with no football competition, how is he going to do it at Syracuse? I want Bryan Hodgson because he has been in environments and navigated successfully environments that have and also care about football. Imagine though Seton Hall beats St Johns tonight though... I don't know why Seton Hall can't find a real funder in the New York Metro area to be a Big East power with Holloway.

My nephew is an alum. They are a third of the size of Syracuse and most undergrads are commuters with no real ties to campus. He basically went there just because it was a windows throw from the City.

Brilliant!

Dean Francis has been bringing up Shaheen Holloway a lot. Not a bad idea. But he’s a Seton Hall alum, and I don’t know if he’d leave for SU. I also want a more exciting offense. He is a very good defensive coach though.
If memory serves, he and Alan Griffin had some defensive battles circa 1999. And Shumpert provided the spacing with a bevy of 3’s.

Not happy that Holloway is in consideration, but does he have good ties to players/AAU programs in New York and New Jersey? Is he considered a good recruiter?

I just don’t see him moving the needle and if we are going low (no Hodgson or Schertz) then give McNamara a deserved shot.

I’m 53 and read it all - but mostly out of respect for the poster. He put more effort into this than I did my proposal to my future wife.

Wait ...you proposed to your future wife via cover letter?

wait what GIF
