One Man's Opinion pt. 1

OK - who can help the dumb guy out with what the "BOB/Hank/Screen game" is? :noidea:
I believe its specific nomenclature/sets for trying to get guys in space and let them win one-on-one battles

If you value the staff's ability to identify talent, then we wouldn't want to lose any of our commits. These were all essentially early recruits - guys the staff locked up because they were very high on their list or that they felt were better gambles than waiting on perhaps a more heavily recruited player. I personally don't want to see the staff have to fall into scramble mode at all here - that rarely leads to positive results and usually leads to holes in the recruiting class or definite B list recruits.

That being said, I believe the staff is assigned regions for recruiting coverage, and the person assigned generally is the first point of contact for recruits in that region. Could be wrong on that, but if not, it would impact our GA and FL recruits to some degree, which is 36% of the class right now.

Yeah I was not really trying to take a shot at the staffs ability to judge talent, the point was more that a lot of these guys were lightly recruited anyway and unlikely to de-commit just because McDonald goes elsewhere. If you're next best option to Syracuse was a MAC school you're not going to de-commit just because McDonald is gone.

I think Morris got the message from someone, in his limited attempts he's been running the ball harder. Less waiting and dancing, which with this OL, won't get you far. I think he's earned a few more reps, and should take them from Erv, who's lucky to be walking upright.

Best hope this weekend to keep it from being a sideshow is to be physical and run the ball. (and hold on to it). If it were the Hunt/McDonald show, I think we'd come out trying to throw it all over the field, and that would not be a recipe for success for this game with our personnel. Lester, and his green QB, will mean it's going to be painfully conservative, in the hopes of avoiding 59-3, and just hanging around as long as they can.

It's called B/H/S. That's what we used to go to Video King to pick up on slow nights.

Thing is, we don't really know who the other players are for our commits. Yeah, maybe it was only MAC schools for some of them back in April or May, but that doesn't mean that's the case now or will be the case in Dec-Feb. We've all had our complaints about the recruiting services in regards to how well they cover our recruits. My largest one is that rarely if ever is the question asked of recruits as to who has been recruiting/offering them after they commit to us. In the past, we were lucky to even get updates on how their seasons were going after they committed, I liked to call it the Syracuse black hole. Thankfully that's changed, probably because our recruiting classes in general have improved, but we rarely get updates on how heavily our commits are recruited by other schools unless they decommit and go elsewhere or take an official somewhere else.

Finwad's posts are great examples of why this is the place to be for a Syracuse fan. Thanks to you Finwad and all of the rest of you that educate the rest of us. It's greatly appreciated...

Too bad all the other posters with good/inside info. we used to enjoy got sick of morons being... morons any time they posted good tidbits.

Thank you!

Really interesting observations.

I happen to feel that AAM should be getting the bulk of the carries. He hits holes and is productive. He is essentially this year's version of Jerome Smith.

I agree that PTG is a third-down back - a good one at that.

I also happen to feel that Jamal Custis should be playing more and that he should be used to stretch the field.

I would like to see Mitch Kimble play a bit and see how he performs in game conditions.

And, I feel for Coach McDonald - I believe that he is an asset to the program - and I do respect Coach Shafer for making the move mid-season - it took guts and is indicative his desire to win now.

All that said Finwad32 and said very well, what is to be with this team? Is this a lost year? Can Shaf hold the recruiting class together if GMAC most likely leaves? Can we get destroyed on Saturday and rally to finish the year 4-2 for a 6-6 record? Is optimism within the team gone?

Man, I would have loved a winnable game this week!

It's never a lost year IMO, there's always time to teach, develop and succeed.

I hope they can and think they will for the most part. Tough group not to believe in.

There's no reason we can't finish on a high note.

I have no idea.

* all just opinions.

Great posts.

Help me with this part...

The suggestion is that "These coaches are going to put who they believe is the best player on the field no matter what. ". Which makes sense.

But then much of the post about the offense laments that we are playing the wrong RBs and wrong WRs.

So what is it? Does our staff know who to put on the field, or don't they?

I'm obviously not there in practice everyday. I'm sure there's very sound reasons for every decision they make. That being said, situationally, I haven't always agreed with their personnel decisions. But who am I? Nobody.

My fault.

Like Eddie said, it's definitely specific and not necessarily what Cuse uses. Bob=bubble out, bill=Bubble in, hank=hitch, etc.

Great stuff Finwad32 . Completely agree with everything you said, player breakdowns and all. I don't want to hear we can't compete with these teams we are playing with. Sure we aren't as talented top to bottom with ND, but we have no business getting blown out by anyone on a regular basis. There are coaching issues all over the field. The talent is regressing is some areas, and stagnant in others.

I think Reddish has been very very good this year. He gets a bad rap for no reason.

Very good post Finwad, I have never been a big Gulley fan, do like Moore and have wondered all year how Morris who was touted as very talented could be so no existent.
I also, like Lewis, alot of players drop passes just happens he was wide open in the end zone off a trick play. Remember Lemon dropping a pass in the end zone a few years ago, worked out OK for him. Also Cornelius showed some potential and is not visible this year.
Loved the post, look forward to more.
Finally am I nuts or would we be better with Isaiah Johnson and Ron Thompson as our ends?

imo we would be FAR better with Thompson and Johnson as our ends. I have been calling for that since the end of last year. Glad i'm not the only one who sees that.

Enjoyed reading that, thanks.

I have often wondered if there is an analogous training exercise or drill that they run for QB's. Understanding what defenses show you and what they are susceptible to is a critical skill for a QB to have, and it has to be a snap decision at the LOS. I would think that you sit the QB down with someone who will call a play, and someone else who will call a defensive alignment (without knowing what each is going to decide). Show the QB what the field looks like from his perspective on a big TV, and have him talk quickly - as quickly as he can - about what he sees and how he is going to attack it. Drill it over and over so that pre-snap awareness becomes a strength. Is that something that is done?
I think you have a business to begin my friend. Could be a multi-million dollar idea that I've never seen in my time playing football. Build that football simulator!

They use gopro cameras on the QB helmets and correct right on the spot.

Love the analysis. But I like Gulley. I like all our running backs. Wish we were suing more than one of them at a time. Moore-Gulley would make a classic FB-HB comination just like the old days.

Geez the offense is bad but do we really need to start suing our own guys?

I disagree about Adam getting the ball more. On that sweep around end against Louisville, McFarland would have had an extra 3-to-4 yds with his speed. Morris is the banger of the two and McFarland has some of the best burst/lateral quickness I have seen at su. Aam is a bull and he runs hard but we are not in a I backfield. Zone is made for speed so let's use our speed and get them two in there. As I have said on another thread even Floyd Little says that they could be two of the best to play here. He said it to me last spring as I was watching them. Also awesome meeting him cause he was one of my dad's favorites along with Larry Csonka. Floyd might know a little about running but just a little.
