FSU is now allowing 440 a game
Texas is allowing 445 a game
ND is allowing 461 a game

Su is sitting at 504.

and thats with the off the wall total of the UL game.. what if Dino had shut it down early and the game hadnt fallen totally apart late in the 4th. says its 700 and not 845. still off the wall

SU goes down to 475 and thats much closer to an avg

think about this. what if we had a bye week 2 and the UL hasnt happened yet. we would be sitting at 419 and 80th. thats only 10 yds off a top 75 middle of the road D.

USF played 3 real games. 450 vs SU. 450 vs FSU and 450 vs Cinci.
uconn played 4 real games. 350 vs navy, 270 vs Virg, 420 vs SU, 340 vs SU.

we look bad here, but so does everyone else.
UL played 4 real games, 850 SU, 530 vs FSU, 560 vs Clem. 720 vs Marsh

This game didnt help either.
ND played 4 games . 440 vs Texas, 400 vs MSU, 530 vs Duke, 650 vs SU

2 games we gave up crazy big plays we look awful and 2 games we didnt we were middle of the road

Hate to be that guy, but those teams all blow this year. You are giving them credit for their history, not their current performance. The reality is that their defenses are bad, that's why they are a combined 7-7. Unfortunately for us, our defense is worse. The good news is, we will get better.

On defensive stats, we also have to consider the fact we play a hurry up offense. Whether we score or not, we are giving the opposing offense more opportunities to rack up yards. Even in games we are losing, like UL, we still play our offensive possessions in an attempt to score. When it was obvious to our previous coaches the game was over, we then tried to slow the game down (even more than we already were attempting to) and make the game score appear to be closer than it actually was. So our defensive stats are typically going to look bad, even if we are winning by a decent margin. Other teams are always going to get more possessions than they typically would, whether they score or not they will at least rack up yards.

With our defense, its not only the statistics, but the style in which we provide little resistance and just how quickly and easily (nearest defender) teams score. These arent 6+ play drives but rather chunks. This is not only demoralizing for the defense, but also the offense just sitting down on the sideline to talk and be coached, only to find the opposing team already in the end zone...no time to talk, helmets on, lets go!

I think the main takeaway from our defense is ALL 11 starters will return in 2017.

No, they are not a great defense today - not by a longshot.

But given a year for maturity and added strength - plus all that extra time to learn the system - this starting unit and their backups will undoubtedly improve.
