We can stop with the "this is terrible for the poor folks who just want to dedicate their lives to doing great things for children" thing. Please? Can I not read that again on here? Yes, it's tragic that these things happen (and have happened since the dawn of time). But the point is: I don't care if you're John Q. Humanitarian -- you don't need to be alone with kids that aren't your own. You can donate money to charities and donate time in a structured environment. But even though there are plenty of good Boy Scout leaders out there, let's not do anymore of these overnight camping trips and one-on-one guy with young boy things anymore. There should be safeguards in place and these kinds of trips should be limited anyway. Is that cool with everybody?

easier said than done. not all parents are good parents and shouldnt have kids to begin with, they dont take the time to spend with them because its a burden to them so they let them go places with other people to get them off their hands. they wait for the day they turn 18 to kick them out when they are no where near ready to take on the world but their best interest was never a concern to these bad parents to begin with.

I agree but I'm not sure how this pertains to my post. If you're a bad parent and don't care what happens with your kids, then yeah, that's bad. I just mean that people think taking really severe precautions with kids and limiting the time they spend with other adults, etc., is a bad thing and I'm only pointing out it's just being smart. I realize most people are good people, but I just don't believe it means I'll pack a bag for my son and send them off to Hawaii together.

I agree it's not terrible for people that want to help kids. But it ain't the greatest thing in the world for disadvantaged kids that spend most of their time in a whacked out, messed up environment - and that won't get the opportunity to see a functional environment as a result of the caution required in the world today.

I agree but it's not "the world today." These kids have been taken advantage of on too many occasions and otherwise ignored in every society ever. Foster parenting is a great example. The people who truly do it to help out kids are saints. But it's a flawed program and does much harm with all the good it does. I realize we'll never strike a perfect balance, but I just think not allowing your kid to sleep over and hang out for hours with a neighbor should be viewed as responsible behavior and not being over-protective, etc.

Then stop complaining about people that feel differently about the right balance posting their opinion. There's costs and trade-offs in every decision and policy, not sure why you can grasp that but get upset enough to post a complaint about people viewing the tradeoffs differently than you do.
